Chapter 19 - Chapter- 19: Testing the Limits (2)

Jack Fenton, a man usually characterized by his boisterous laughter and obsession with ghosts, was currently running for his life. His heavy boots thudded against the cracked pavement of a derelict cityscape, a desperate rhythm that mirrored the frantic pounding of his heart. Behind him, a sea of gray, rotting flesh surged forward—a zombie horde driven by a single, mindless hunger. Their moans, a low, guttural chorus of the damned, echoed off the skeletal remains of skyscrapers.

"Eat my dust, you ecto-rejects!" Jack bellowed, though his voice lacked its usual bravado. He glanced over his shoulder, seeing the lead zombies only yards away, their milky eyes fixed on him with predatory intensity.

Outside the simulation pod, the atmosphere was equally tense. Maddie and Jazz were glued to the primary monitor, their faces pale in the flickering blue light. Danny stood slightly apart, his arms crossed, his brow furrowed in concentration.

"Artemis, status report," Danny commanded, his voice tight.

The AI's cool, synthesized voice responded instantly. "Monitoring Jack Fenton's vitals. Heart rate is at 180 beats per minute. Adrenaline levels are off the charts. However, I am detecting a significant foreign energy spike within him, similar to the one we observed during other transformations."

Maddie gripped the edge of the console, her knuckles white. "Is he going to be alright, Danny? The simulation seems… intense."

"He needs to find the trigger, Mom," Danny replied, his eyes never leaving the screen. "We all did. For Dad, it's different. It's deeper."

Jazz turned to her brother, her eyes wide with a mix of fear and intellectual curiosity. "Danny, do you have other simulations like this? For different scenarios?"

Danny nodded. "Dozens. Urban combat, deep-sea environments, even made up extra-dimensional planes. It was fun designing them actually."

Back inside the simulation, the tide had turned. Jack tripped over a piece of rusted rebar, sprawling onto the asphalt. Before he could scramble up, the first wave of zombies was upon him. They piled on, a writhing mass of cold, dead limbs. Jack's screams were sharp at first, then muffled as the weight of the horde buried him completely.

"Jack!" Maddie cried out, her hand flying to her mouth.

"Wait," Danny said, his voice a low whisper. "Look at the energy readings."

The monitors began to flare with a vibrant, toxic green light. On the screen, the pile of zombies suddenly shuddered. A low growl, more animal than human, vibrated through the audio speakers.

Inside the pile, Jack's world had narrowed to a single point of white-hot instinct. The fear that had fueled his flight was suddenly replaced by something else. His eyes snapped open, glowing with a brilliant, supernatural green. Thick, emerald-colored veins pulsed beneath his skin, and his muscles began to bulge, tearing through the seams of his clothes.

With a roar that shook the very foundations of the simulated city, Jack exploded upward. Zombies were tossed aside like ragdolls, their fragile forms shattering against the nearby buildings. From the center of the carnage emerged a figure that bore only a passing resemblance to Jack Fenton.

He stood eight feet tall, a mountain of corded muscle and raw power. This was the 'Hyde' form—a manifestation of Jack's most primal, protective instincts as Danny described.

The Hyde-Jack didn't wait. He lunged at the nearest cluster of zombies, his movements a blur of superhuman speed and terrifying strength. He swung a massive fist, decapitating three zombies with a single blow. He grabbed another by its waist and snapped it over his knee like a dry twig.

"Oh, boy," Danny muttered, a shiver running down his spine. "That's… that's a lot of power."

Maddie and Jazz watched in a stunned silence that was part horror and part awe. The Hyde-Jack was a whirlwind of destruction. He was dismantling the horde. He lunged forward, his teeth bared in a feral grin, and ripped the arm off a zombie that tried to grab him, using the limb as a makeshift club to bash in the skulls of several others.

As the carnage reached its peak, a sound began to emanate from the Hyde-Jack. It started as a low chuckle and grew into a booming, manic laugh. He was enjoying this. The sheer, unadulterated release of power was intoxicating.

Seeing this through the monitors, Jazz felt a cold dread settle in her stomach. "He's… he's laughing, Danny. Why is he laughing?"

"Primal release," Artemis interjected. "The transformation bypasses the higher functions of the brain, tapping into the core of the lizard brain. Joy, in its most basic form, is often linked to dominance and survival."

To further accentuate the scene, Artemis began to play a heavy, driving rock anthem that echoed through the training room, the distorted guitars and crashing drums synchronizing with Hyde-Jack's brutal strikes.

The fight didn't last much longer. Within minutes, the hundreds of zombies that had once threatened Jack lay in a mangled heap of simulated matter. Hyde-Jack stood in the center of the clearing, his chest heaving like a bellows, his veins still glowing with that eerie green light. The manic smile remained plastered across his face.

"That…" Hyde-Jack panted, his voice a deep, gravelly rumble. "That was the most awesome thing I have ever done! Hahahahahahaha!"

As the simulation faded, the massive form began to shrink, the green light receding back into Jack's skin. The transformation left him drained. He stepped out of the simulation pod, dizzy and disoriented, a thin trail of blood trickling from his nose.

The family rushed to him. Maddie caught him as his knees buckled, guiding him to a nearby bench. Jazz began checking his pulse and pupil dilation.

"Easy, Dad," Danny said, stepping forward with a look of genuine remorse. "I'm sorry. I shouldn't have pushed the simulation that far. I just needed to see if the trigger would work."

Jack looked up, his eyes slowly regaining their normal blue hue. He wiped the blood from his nose and gave a weak, shaky thumb-up. "Don't sweat it, D-man. It was… intense. But Arty's music? Spot on."

After a few minutes of recovery, while Artemis compiled the data from the session, the family gathered around the central terminal.

"Alright," Danny began, his tone becoming serious as he pulled up the observation report. "Here's what we've got. Unlike Mom, Jazz, or me, Dad's abilities are almost entirely primal and instinctual. It's like an animalistic defense mechanism. Primal emotions—fear, shock, the need to protect—these are the keys to the 'Hyde' transformation."

He looked at his father. "Because it's so tied to your instincts, Dad, you're going to need the most training. We need to make sure you can control the Hyde, not the other way around."

Danny then turned his attention to the larger picture. "Artemis has gathered all the information from today's sessions. She's started analyzing our power sets to create a tailored training regimen for each of us. But there's one more thing. Arty, show them the plans for the new portal."

A holographic schematic appeared in the air, a complex web of shimmering lines and technical notations.

"The new Fenton Portal," Artemis explained. "With the right components, it will take at least a month to recreate it from the ground up, incorporating the new safety protocols and energy stabilizers."

Jazz's reaction was immediate. "A month? Danny, what are we supposed to do for a whole month? What will I do? Even if we master these… these powers, how long can we go before someone notices? The government, the neighbors… and why are we even building it again? That thing is what started all of this!"

Danny sighed, recognizing the familiar edge of anxiety in his sister's voice. He knew her world had been turned upside down, and she was looking for a way back to normalcy.

"We need the portal, Jazz," Danny said softly. "The dimensional energy that mutated us—that ecto-energy—it's the only lead we have. It might be the key to reversing the process, or at least understanding how to live with it. And look at the calendar. My high school starts in early February, and your university semester begins then too. We have a few weeks of 'winter break' left. We have to use this time to get a handle on this."

Maddie placed a comforting hand on Jazz's shoulder. "He's right, honey. We can't go back to the way things were, but we can prepare for what's coming."

The room fell into a thoughtful silence. The family had a daunting road ahead of them. Training in the simulation was one thing, but achieving mastery over their new, volatile abilities was another matter entirely. Yet, as they looked at the glowing schematic of the portal, there was a sense of purpose. They had a start, a direction amidst the chaos and madness.
