The desert woke to smoke.
Not from war.
From hope.
The wreck of the Black Rail still burned blue on the horizon.
People from hidden camps walked miles just to see it.
A broken chain meant something.
Juvy stood on a cliff watching the flames fade.
Behind her, the resistance camp had tripled overnight.
Runaways from domes.
Former rail guards.
Families who had nothing left.
They all looked at her.
Like she had answers.
She didn't.
A woman approached her.
"You're the one who freed them?"
Juvy nodded.
The woman grabbed her hand.
"My daughter was on that train."
Juvy felt her throat tighten.
"Is she alive?"
The woman smiled through tears.
"Yes."
That should've felt good.
Instead it felt heavy.
Eli sat beside her later.
"You look scared."
"I am."
"Why?"
Juvy looked at the camp.
"They think I can save everyone."
Eli shrugged.
"You saved me."
That didn't make it easier.
Dustfall prepared for war.
The Glass Fleet returned at sunrise.
Three domes this time.
Descending like silent moons.
Maxruell stood in the street below them.
Civilians ran.
He didn't.
The first dome landed.
Glass soldiers marched out.
Their commander spoke through a speaker:
"Maxruell.
Surrender authority of Dustfall."
Maxruell laughed quietly.
"I don't even want it."
The commander raised his hand.
"Then die with it."
The street exploded.
Shadows tore through the soldiers.
But these weren't normal troops.
Their armor absorbed darkness.
Maxruell felt it.
His power slowing.
The stone burned hotter.
Push harder.
He did.
Darkness flooded the street.
Buildings cracked.
Glass soldiers shattered.
But not all of them.
The commander survived.
He pulled out a weapon glowing blue.
A soul cannon.
He fired.
Maxruell flew through a wall.
Blood filled his mouth.
Back in the desert camp…
Juvy collapsed again.
The soul bindings from the train were tearing her apart.
Serah appeared beside her fire.
"You're killing yourself."
Juvy didn't open her eyes.
"Better me than them."
Serah tilted her head.
"That's why Cain fears you."
Juvy laughed weakly.
"She's the one hunting me."
Serah whispered something strange:
"Because you're not supposed to exist."
Juvy opened her eyes.
"What?"
Serah looked at the sky.
"You and Maxruell…
the twins were meant to be one vessel."
Juvy's blood went cold.
"What are you talking about?"
Serah's voice softened.
"Your family line carries the power of the Significants.
But it was never meant to split."
Juvy sat up slowly.
"You're saying…?"
"One of you was meant to inherit everything."
Silence filled the desert.
In Dustfall…
Maxruell climbed from the rubble.
The commander approached.
"You're weaker than predicted."
Maxruell wiped blood from his mouth.
"Then come finish it."
The commander aimed the soul cannon again.
Maxruell looked at the sky.
At the same stars Juvy watched.
Then he smiled.
Darkness exploded outward.
Not shadow.
Death itself.
The street collapsed into a black crater.
When the dust cleared The commander was gone.
So were half the buildings.
People stared at Maxruell in terror.
Even his allies stepped back.
He whispered to himself:
"I didn't mean to go that far…"
The stone pulsed.
Yes you did.
Far away, Mother Cain watched both feeds.
Serah's message had reached Juvy.
Maxruell had crossed another line.
Cain smiled.
"Now they know the truth."
A general beside her asked:
"What truth?"
Cain answered quietly:
"Only one Significant can rule the world."
That night, two siblings stared at the same sky.
Juvy whispered:
"I won't kill him."
Maxruell whispered:
"I won't fight her."
The world didn't care.
The world was already choosing sides.
