Chapter 9 - THE ARCHITECT

The wine tasted like victory.

Vivian swirled the glass, watching the red catch light from the fireplace. Outside her window, the palace was chaos. Guards running. Wolves howling. The entire compound on high alert after the bridge incident.

Inside her chambers, everything was perfectly calm.

Her phone buzzed. She glanced at the screen.

**Marcus:** Bridge attack failed. Both survived. Kael used dominance display. 50+ witnesses to Omega's projection ability.

She smiled.

Typed back: Perfect. Proceed to phase three.

Marcus: You said it would work.

It is working. Trust the process.

She set the phone down. Took another sip. The wine was a 1947 Bordeaux. Expensive. Rare. Worth more than most wolves made in a year.

She'd been saving it for tonight.

The door opened without a knock. Marcus strode in, his face tight with the kind of tension that came from spending all day pretending to be loyal while actively committing treason.

"You're enjoying this too much," he said.

"I'm enjoying it exactly the right amount." She gestured to the second glass she'd already poured. "Sit. Drink. Celebrate."

"Celebrate what? Kael's still alive. The Omega's still with him. And now half the city knows she has abilities we didn't account for."

"Marcus." She said his name like a teacher correcting a slow student. "What was the goal of the bridge attack?"

He frowned. "To separate them. To grab the Omega while Kael was distracted."

"Wrong." She stood. Walked to the window. Looked down at the courtyard where guards were still organizing. "The goal was to make Kael reveal himself. To show everyone exactly what kind of king he's becoming."

Understanding dawned slowly on Marcus's face. "The dominance display."

"Fifty-three wolves. By last count. All of them felt it. All of them on their knees." Vivian turned. "And what do you think they're saying right now? What story are they telling?"

"That the Alpha King used excessive force."

"That the Alpha King lost control." She corrected. "That he was so desperate to protect one Omega—one unmated, unclaimed Omega who by law should be in a holding cell—that he dropped an entire bridge full of wolves. Mated and unmated alike. Guards and civilians."

Marcus's expression shifted. "Public opinion."

"Is turning. Exactly as planned." She moved back to her chair. Sat. "By morning, there will be calls for an emergency session. By afternoon, the council will vote to move the auction up. And by tomorrow night, Aria Morgan will belong to someone else while Kael watches helplessly."

"Unless he mates her first."

"He won't."

"How can you be sure?"

Vivian took another sip. "Because I know Thorne men. They think they're better than their baser instincts. They think they can have control and desire both." Her voice went cold. "My sister thought Kael's father could control himself too. Right up until he threw her from a tower."

Silence settled heavy.

Marcus shifted. Uncomfortable. He hadn't been there when they'd found Evelyn. Hadn't seen what Vivian had seen.

Hadn't made the promises Vivian had made over her sister's broken body.

"The three Omegas," Marcus said finally. "They're secure?"

"See for yourself."

She stood. Led him through her chambers to a door most people didn't know existed. Down stairs that went deeper than they should. Into a basement that technically wasn't supposed to be here.

The room at the bottom was comfortable. Not a cell. A living space. Bed. Furniture. Books. Everything three scared Omegas might need.

Except freedom.

They looked up when Vivian entered. Two girls, one boy. All young. Early twenties at most. All staring at her with expressions that made her chest tight.

Not fear. Gratitude.

"Lady Kane." The dark-haired girl stood. "Is it true? About the bridge?"

"It's true. The Alpha King endangered dozens of wolves to protect his... companion."

The boy's hands fisted. "While we were trapped in that fire. While he sent his guards but didn't come himself."

"He was busy." Vivian kept her voice gentle. Sympathetic. "I'm sure he had his reasons."

The third Omega, a blonde who hadn't spoken yet, looked up. "When can we testify? When can we tell everyone what really happened?"

"Soon. The council is convening an emergency session. You'll have your chance to speak." Vivian moved closer. Crouched so she was eye level. "I know this is difficult. I know you're scared. But what you're doing is important. You're saving other Omegas from suffering the same fate."

"Like your sister," the dark-haired girl said softly.

Vivian's throat went tight. "Yes. Like Evelyn."

She'd told them a version of the truth. That Evelyn had been an Omega. That Kael's father had become obsessed with her. That he'd locked her away and eventually killed her when she tried to escape.

All true.

She just hadn't mentioned that Evelyn had loved him back. That the obsession had been mutual. That Evelyn had stayed willingly until the very end when his madness had finally broken her.

Details. Unnecessary details.

"You're safe here," Vivian said. Meant it. "No one will hurt you. And after tomorrow, you'll be free to choose your own paths. No auction. No forced bonds. Just freedom."

They believed her. She could see it in their faces.

They didn't know that freedom was expensive. That it required sacrifices.

That three Omegas testifying against the Alpha King would destabilize the throne just enough for the real changes to begin.

Vivian stood. Gave them a warm smile. "Rest. Eat. Tomorrow is a big day."

She left them there. Locked the door. Climbed back upstairs with Marcus trailing behind.

"They trust you," he observed.

"I haven't lied to them."

"You haven't told them the whole truth either."

"The whole truth would complicate things." She poured herself more wine. "They don't need to know that their testimony will trigger a vote of no confidence. That Kael will be removed. That the throne will pass to a regent council until a new Alpha King can be chosen."

"A regent council you'll control."

"A regent council that will finally institute protections for Omegas. That will outlaw forced bonds. That will make sure what happened to Evelyn never happens again." She met his eyes. "Isn't that what we've been working toward?"

Marcus looked away first. "And the girl? Aria?"

"Goes to auction as planned."

"To who?"

Vivian smiled. "Someone who'll take very good care of her."

"Vivian. Who?"

"Does it matter? She'll be alive. Safe. Away from Kael before he can destroy her the way his father destroyed Evelyn." She set her glass down. "That's what matters."

Marcus's phone buzzed. He checked it. Frowned. "The traitor says Kael's requesting a private council session. Tonight. Before the emergency session tomorrow."

"Requesting or demanding?"

"Demanding."

Interesting. Kael was moving faster than she'd expected. Smarter than his father in that regard at least.

"Let him have it. Let him make his case." Vivian moved to her desk. Pulled out a folder she'd been keeping for exactly this moment. "While he's talking, I'll be presenting evidence."

She opened the folder. Inside were photographs. Medical reports. Testimony from guards who'd been at the northern district.

All of it carefully curated. Carefully edited.

All of it painting the picture she needed: that Kael had abandoned three Omegas to save one. That his judgment was compromised. That his obsession was making him dangerous.

"This is really happening," Marcus said quietly. "We're really doing this."

"We've been doing this for six years. Ever since Evelyn died." Vivian closed the folder. "Tomorrow we just finish it."

A knock at the door. Soft. Hesitant.

Vivian's expression shifted. Warmed. "Come in, darling."

The door opened. Celeste stepped through.

She looked terrible. Eyes red. Face pale. Still wearing the dress from earlier but it was wrinkled now. Like she'd been sitting in it for hours.

"I heard about the bridge," Celeste said. Voice small. "Is he hurt?"

"Kael's fine. A few cuts. Nothing serious."

"And the Omega?"

"Also fine."

Celeste's hands twisted together. "Vivian. What are we doing?"

"We're protecting you."

"Are we? Because it feels like we're destroying him." Celeste moved further into the room. Saw Marcus. Stopped. "Are you part of this too? Uncle Marcus?"

Marcus had the grace to look uncomfortable. "Celeste. You're too young to understand the politics—"

"I'm twenty-three. I understand that you're staging a coup." Her voice shook but held steady. "I understand that you're using me as an excuse to take down the king I'm supposed to marry."

Vivian crossed to her. Took her hands. "Sweetheart. Look at me."

Celeste looked. Tears running down her face.

"Do you know how Evelyn died?" Vivian asked gently.

"The Alpha King threw her from a tower."

"Do you know why?"

Celeste shook her head.

"Because she tried to leave. Because after months of being locked in his quarters, of being his obsession, of being told she was protected and loved and safe, she realized she was actually a prisoner. So she tried to escape." Vivian's voice went hard. "He caught her at the tower window. And instead of letting her go, he threw her out. Because if he couldn't have her, no one could."

Celeste's face crumpled.

"That's what Thorne men do. They obsess. They possess. They destroy the things they claim to love." Vivian pulled Celeste close. "I won't let that happen to you. I won't watch Kael turn into his father. Won't watch you become another Evelyn."

"But he's not his father," Celeste whispered against Vivian's shoulder. "He's trying so hard not to be."

"I know. And that's exactly why this is so dangerous." Vivian stroked her hair. "He's trying to be better. Trying to choose duty over desire. But the bond is pulling at him. Every day it gets stronger. Every day it becomes harder to resist." She pulled back. Looked Celeste in the eyes. "Eventually, he'll break. And when he does, someone gets destroyed. Better it's the Omega who's been here a week than the woman who's supposed to be his queen."

Celeste wiped her eyes. "I don't want anyone destroyed."

"I know, darling. Neither do I. But this world doesn't give us gentle options." Vivian tucked Celeste's hair behind her ear. "After tomorrow, it'll be over. Aria will be safe. You'll be safe. And Kael will be free from the bond before it kills him."

"You really believe that? That separating them is kindness?"

"I believe it's survival." Vivian's voice went soft. "I watched Evelyn die loving a man who killed her. I won't watch it happen again."

Celeste searched her face. Looking for something. Lies. Truth. Permission to walk away from all of this.

"What do you need me to do?" she asked finally.

"Tomorrow. At the council session. When they ask you about the engagement." Vivian squeezed her hands. "Tell them you still want to marry him. That you're committed to the alliance. That you understand his current... distraction... is temporary."

"And if it's not? If he chooses her?"

"He won't. I'll make sure of it." Vivian smiled. Cold. Certain. "Now go rest. Tomorrow is going to be difficult."

Celeste nodded. Started to leave. Stopped at the door.

"Vivian? The three Omegas. Are they really safe?"

"Completely."

"And after tomorrow? After they testify?"

"They'll be released. Given new identities. Relocated somewhere safe." All true. Vivian had already arranged it. "They'll have the freedom Evelyn never got."

Celeste nodded slowly. Left.

The door closed behind her.

Marcus let out a breath. "She's going to figure it out eventually."

"By then it'll be too late." Vivian moved back to her desk. Started arranging papers. "Everything's in motion. The emergency session is set for noon tomorrow. The three Omegas will testify at two. By three, the vote will happen. By four, Kael will be suspended pending investigation. By evening, Aria goes to auction."

"And if Kael fights back?"

"With what? He's isolated. The council doesn't trust him. The public thinks he's reckless. His own guards are questioning his judgment." She looked up. "He has nothing left except that bond. And tomorrow I'm taking that too."

Her phone buzzed again. Unknown number.

She answered. "Yes?"

"Lady Kane." The voice was distorted. Mechanical. "I have the item you requested."

Vivian's pulse quickened. "You're certain?"

"Positive identification. She's secure. Awaiting your instructions."

"Hold her until after the auction. If the Omega cooperates, release her unharmed. If not..." Vivian paused. "Well. Leverage is only useful if you're willing to use it."

"Understood."

The line went dead.

Marcus was staring at her. "Who was that?"

"Insurance." Vivian pulled out another folder. This one thinner. Opened it to a photograph of a young woman with kind eyes and an easy smile. "Aria's friend. Iris."

"You kidnapped her friend?"

"I secured a potential asset. There's a difference."

"Vivian. That's—"

"Necessary." She closed the folder. "If Aria refuses to cooperate tomorrow. If she tries to run or fight or do anything that complicates the situation, I need leverage. Iris gives me that."

Marcus shook his head. "This is getting out of hand."

"This is getting finished. After six years of planning. Six years of watching Kael sit on a throne built with my sister's blood. Six years of waiting for the right moment." Vivian's voice went sharp. "I'm not stopping now because you're suddenly developing a conscience."

"I'm not—" Marcus stopped. Breathed. "I'm just saying maybe we've gone far enough. Maybe we make our point tomorrow and let the rest play out naturally."

"Naturally." Vivian laughed. Hard. "You want to let nature take its course with a fated mate bond? Do you have any idea how that ends?"

"Vivian—"

"They fuck until they can't function. They mark each other. They bond so deep that separation becomes physically impossible. And then when reality crashes back in, when Kael remembers he's king and she remembers she's nobody, they destroy each other trying to make it work." Her hands were shaking. She fisted them. "That's what happened to Evelyn. She bonded with him thinking love was enough. By the time she realized it wasn't, it was too late to leave."

Silence.

Marcus looked at her with something like pity.

She hated it.

"Get out," she said quietly.

"Vivian—"

"Get. Out."

He left.

She stood alone in her chambers. Surrounded by files and plans and six years of careful architecture.

Tomorrow it all came together. Tomorrow Kael fell. Tomorrow Aria was saved whether she wanted to be or not. Tomorrow the Thorne bloodline finally paid for what they'd taken from her.

Vivian picked up the photograph of Evelyn she kept in her desk drawer. Young. Smiling. Taken before she'd ever met the Alpha King who would kill her.

"I'm sorry it took so long," Vivian whispered. "But I'm going to fix it. I'm going to make sure no one else ends up like you."

She set the photo down. Finished her wine. Started preparing for tomorrow's session.

Outside, thunder rolled. Storm coming.

Perfect.

Let it rain. Let the whole world drown if it had to.

As long as when the water receded, Kael Thorne was no longer standing on his throne.
