Chapter 5 - Chapter 5 — Before the Sun Wakes

Date: Mid-Autumn, Taishō

Age: Akira — 7

Location: Azabu District, shrine clearing

Combat Strength: ★★☆☆☆ → ★★☆☆☆ (Technique understanding rising; physical limits exposed)

---

The world was still asleep.

No vendors calling.

No children laughing.

No footsteps but his own.

Akira stepped into the shrine clearing while the sky remained a deep, soft blue—just before the sun remembered it had a duty. Dew clung to the grass, soaking his ankles as he stood barefoot in the center of the packed earth.

This was his favorite time.

No one watched.

No one needed him.

He lifted the wooden sword.

"Begin," he whispered.

> "Training session acknowledged. Environmental conditions optimal."

Akira inhaled—not deliberately, not as a technique—just enough to steady himself.

Form One.

A clean overhead cut, shoulders relaxed.

Form Two.

Hip rotation, blade following the body.

Form Three.

A low sweeping motion, weight shifting smoothly from heel to toe.

He flowed from movement to movement, memory guiding him more than thought. The clearing felt smaller now—as if his body was learning exactly how much space it needed.

> "Muscle memory integration at 41%."

Again.

Again.

Again.

His breath fogged faintly in the chill air.

He didn't stop when his arms began to ache.

He didn't stop when his legs trembled.

Because the sun wasn't up yet.

And that meant there was still time.

---

He didn't hear the soft footsteps at first.

"Akira…?"

His sword halted mid-motion.

Mitsuri stood at the edge of the clearing, wrapped in a light shawl, eyes wide with sleepy curiosity. Her breath puffed softly in the cold.

"You shouldn't be up," Akira said automatically.

She smiled sheepishly. "I saw you leave. I was curious."

He hesitated. "…You'll catch a cold."

"I'll stand over here," she promised, immediately backing up a few steps. "I won't interrupt."

She sat on a stone, hands folded in her lap, watching quietly.

Akira turned back to the clearing.

> "Advisory: Presence of observer may affect concentration."

"I know," he thought back. But she's not… distracting.

He resumed.

Mitsuri didn't speak.

She just watched—eyes following the arc of his blade, brow furrowing whenever he slowed. There was no fear in her gaze. No confusion.

Only wonder.

"You look like you're dancing," she said softly.

Akira didn't turn. "…It's not a dance."

She tilted her head. "It's pretty, though."

His ears warmed.

He finished the sequence—six forms only—and lowered the sword.

The sky had lightened.

The sun was close.

That's when the world tilted.

His vision dimmed at the edges. The sword slipped from his fingers, landing in the grass with a dull thud.

"Akira?"

His knees buckled.

He didn't hit the ground.

Mitsuri was suddenly there, hands gripping his sleeves as he sagged forward.

"Akira! Hey—!"

> "Warning: Acute exhaustion. Blood sugar low. Muscle overuse detected."

"Immediate intervention required."

I… miscalculated, Akira thought dimly.

> "Correction: You ignored recommendations."

"…Sorry."

Mitsuri guided him to sit, panic flickering across her face. "You're burning up! Why didn't you stop?"

Akira forced a weak smile. "Because… I felt close."

"That's not worth hurting yourself!" she said sharply—then clamped her mouth shut, eyes shining. "Sorry. I just… got scared."

He looked at her—really looked.

"…Thank you," he said quietly.

She helped him drink water, hands trembling slightly. The world steadied, slowly.

> "Recovery in progress. Estimated time: 18 minutes."

The sun crested the rooftops.

Mitsuri let out a shaky breath. "You always do things like this," she murmured. "Quietly. Alone."

Akira stared at the light filtering through the trees.

"…I won't next time."

She nodded, unconvinced—but relieved.

---

Later that day, Akira walked through the market.

His coin pouch was heavier now—weeks of careful saving from meals cooked, wounds cleaned, errands run. He stopped in front of a modest stall.

Practice swords.

Wooden. Balanced. Properly weighted.

He tested one—light, but honest.

"This one," he said.

The merchant raised a brow. "You train?"

Akira nodded. "I'm learning."

Coins exchanged hands.

When he held the practice sword, something settled in his chest.

> "Weapon compatibility: High. Balance suited to growth phase."

Mitsuri clapped softly behind him. "It's perfect!"

He glanced back, surprised. "You followed me?"

"Of course," she said. "This is important."

He smiled.

That evening, Akira didn't train.

He rested.

Because learning when to stop… was part of getting stronger.

And tomorrow—

Tomorrow, the sun would rise again.
