Chapter 68 - "Don't You Ever Bow Like That."

The air in the dining hall was thick, heavy with the scent of roasted meat and spiced wine—luxuries meant to tempt, to weaken. James's voice cut through it like a blade through silk.

"Are you not hungry?"

His fingers toyed with the stem of his wine glass, the ruby liquid catching the light. His eyes—pale, predatory—never left mine.

"I could feed you..."

The words slithered into my ears, wrapping around my mind like smoke.

I could feed you...

I could feed you...

I could feed you...

A whisper. A taunt. A promise.

And suddenly—

I wasn't there anymore.

The dining hall smelled of boiled cabbage and the sour tang of too many unwashed bodies pressed too close. The wooden bench dug into my thighs as I sat, spine straight, hands folded in my lap. Waiting.
