Rex's eyes snapped open to chaos.
Sunlight was streaming through the carriage windows, far too bright for the pre-dawn hour when he'd fallen asleep. His body felt different, charged with energy that hadn't been there before, and the mark on his right hand pulsed once before settling into dormancy.
Outside the carriage, he can hear someone screaming.
Rex sat up quickly and automatically took stock of his surroundings. Lily was pressed against the back wall of the carriage, and her face was pale.
Helena held her hands up, and magic crackled between them. Diana was looking for a weapon that wasn't there because everything was packed tightly for the trip.
Evelyn was right behind Elliot, and he was already trying to push open the carriage door. She looked like she was ready to fight.
"What's going on...?" Rex asked, his voice cutting through the fear.
"Demons," Helena said in a short way. "Flying demons."
"They suddenly appeared five minutes ago."
