TEN YEARS LATER.
The hierarchy of the city had shifted, but the names at the top remained the same, even if the faces had hardened into masks of power.
Sofia Vance no longer the girl who sought validation in schoolyard hierarchy sat in a high-backed leather chair on the 60th floor of Vance Global. As the CEO, she had transformed her mother's legacy into a multi-national conglomerate. She was sharp, elegant, and formidable. Yet, despite the billions in assets, her most frequent "business" check-ins were directed toward a thriving corner of the city's Gastronomy District.
For a decade, Sofia had played a long, patient game.
THE HIDDEN LINEAGE
Over the years Kei had work hard to build the Luz Group company, a car company.
Now, Kei Luz was a name that carried as much weight as Vance. She was one of the richest individuals in the country, yet she refused the high-rise offices. She ran her multi-billion dollar holdings from the back office of K-STREET, her famous street food restaurant. She had turned "street food" into a global brand, proving that she could conquer the elite world without ever wearing their uniform again.
Sofia was a regular. Every Friday, she took the same corner table. She wasn't "wooing" a maid anymore; she was courting an equal who was arguably more powerful than herself.
"The sea bass was excellent tonight, Chef," Sofia said, stepping into the kitchen after the rush.
Kei looked up, wiping a smudge of flour from her cheek. She wore a black designer chef's coat that cost more than most people's cars. "You've eaten that dish fourteen times in two months, Sofia. Surely a CEO has better things to do."
"I've been waiting ten years for you to realize I'm not here for the food, Kei," Sofia countered, her voice dropping. "I don't care about the Luz name or the Vance name. I just want the girl I love".
THE GHOSTS OF THE MEDICAL DISTRICT
While the tension simmered at K-Street, a different kind of power was moving through the city's medical district.
Dr. Fay Sterling, the brilliant daughter of the CEO of Sterling National Hospital, had just returned to the country. Her father, a world-renowned surgeon, had groomed her to take over the prestigious institution. Fay was the golden girl of the medical world beautiful, surgical, and commanding.
She sat in her new office, staring at a list of potential donors for the hospital's new research wing. Her eyes stopped on two names: Vance Global and The Luz Group.
"Sofia Vance… and this Luz CEO," Fay murmured, a memory of a "marriage booth" flickering in her mind. She had no idea that the girl from her past the one who had ghosted her at the gate was now a titan of industry.
THE NEAR MISS
Later that evening, the heavy glass doors of the Sterling Medical Plaza swung open.
Kei was there, dressed in a simple black hoodie that hid her status, delivering a massive "Thank You" catering order for the night-shift nurses. Despite her wealth, she still preferred to handle the flagship deliveries herself to keep her feet on the ground.
At the exact same moment, Fay Sterling was walking toward the exit, deep in a consultation over her tablet. She was tired, her mind buried in surgical charts.
They passed each other in the revolving doors of the lobby.
The scent of Kei's charcoal-grilled spices brushed past the sterile, antiseptic scent of Fay's lab coat. For a split second, the air between them seemed to hum a residual vibration from a gate ten years ago. Kei felt a strange, cold prickle on the back of her neck, pausing for a heartbeat to look back, but the lobby was crowded.
Fay felt a sudden, inexplicable sense of déjà vu. She stopped mid-sentence as the scent of wood smoke hit her. She looked around, but all she saw was the back of a delivery person disappearing into the night.
They were feet apart, yet worlds away.
THE COLLISION COURSE
Fay shook off the feeling and dialed her assistant. "Schedule a meeting with Sofia Vance. And send a formal inquiry to the Luz Group. I want both of them at the hospital gala"
She had no idea that by seeking out the city's elite, she was walking straight back into the life of the girl she had waited for in the rain.
