Chapter 96 - Xenovia

This, this, this-what does Hiro-kun mean?

He gave me such a precious Sacred Gear, and the request is like this?

Does he... have feelings for me?

No, no, no!

Rias-senpai, Akeno-senpai, Sona-kaichou, even Tsubaki-fukukaichou are all far more charming than me.

There's no way Hiro-kun would be interested in a little girl like me.

Because the request truly was "not difficult," Lint Sellzen didn't refuse him.

But as time passed, the unprecedented experience made her cheeks inevitably flush bright red.

Her hands, clasped with Hiro's, grew damp with sweat due to sheer nervousness.

Hiro noticed it immediately.

Seeing her tense expression, he felt a bit helpless and spoke gently.

"Don't be nervous. Just keep this posture for half a minute. I won't make any other excessive requests."

"Y-yes! I'm not nervous!"

Lint Sellzen denied it vehemently.

But the violent trembling in her wine-red pupils and her on-the-verge-of-fainting look made it completely unconvincing.

Your body isn't saying that.

Hiro felt the pressure from her fingertips and the moisture in his palm.

To accommodate the girl who looked like she might faint at any second, he kept that thought to himself.

"Ye-Hiro-kun... what's the name of this Sacred Gear?"

"Do you... no, do you know it?"

For some reason, she had started using honorifics.

"'You' is a bit much. We're going to be living under the same roof."

"Using honorifics like that might make Sona and the others think I threatened you."

"But yes, I do know its name."

Recalling the description of the Incinerate Anthem, and the scene of Augustus using it, Hiro paused briefly.

Then he explained calmly.

"It's called the Incinerate Anthem. The legendary cross used during the suffering of the Son of God."

"It manifests purple flames with extremely strong purification power."

"As for the rest, I'll leave it to you, the user, to explore."

"I see... the cross of the Son of God's suffering..."

Lint Sellzen murmured the name.

Then her expression froze.

She realized what he had just said.

The cross of the Son of God's suffering.

The Incinerate Anthem.

Isn't this... one of the thirteen Longinus-class Sacred Gears?

Why was it treated like an ordinary Sacred Gear?

And why-

Why did he just give me, so casually, the strongest Sacred Gear among the three factions?

One that can kill gods?

Why is he so good to me?

Staring blankly at the boy only a few dozen centimeters away-black hair, tea-colored eyes, an ordinary appearance yet strangely captivating-Lint Sellzen felt her thoughts scatter.

Paired with the explanation just now, something inside her felt like it had snapped.

As Hiro finished explaining, the system prompt sounded at just the right time.

"Ding! Congratulations to the host for seizing Sixth-Tier Luck."

"Reward obtained: Mental Out - Lv5."

Mental Out, huh.

Not Lv6 Archmage-tier.

That was a bit disappointing.

But considering what Lv5 represented-second only to Lv6-that regret quickly faded.

Normal Misaka Mikoto is Lv5.

Berserk Misaka Mikoto is still Lv5.

Same level. Same ability.

Yet the gap can be enormous.

There was no way Shokuhou Misaki's ability would become weaker when transferred to him.

Hiro surpassed her by an unknown margin in both computational power and bodily capacity.

The most direct reflection of that was academics.

And Hiro had always been tied for first.

"Why... are you so good to me?"

The moment he released her hands, the girl's near-inaudible murmur reached his ears.

His expression turned slightly odd.

As expected.

The gift, plus the ambiguous request, had been misinterpreted as affection.

But before he could answer-

"N-no! I'm sorry!"

"Please forget what I just said!"

Her face burning red, Lint Sellzen bowed deeply.

If Hiro hadn't stepped back half a pace, he would have been headbutted.

"...I'll try my best."

He replied vaguely.

The faint scent of an unfamiliar perfume drifted up as he looked at her delicate nape.

For a moment, it almost looked like white steam was rising from her head.

"Thank you very much!!"

Leaving those words behind, she straightened up.

She didn't dare look at him again.

Turning abruptly, she ran straight out of the reception room.

Watching her retreating figure, Hiro raised his right hand slightly.

He considered testing his newly acquired ability on her.

The thought vanished just as quickly.

Forget it.

I'll just try it on a random classmate tomorrow.

Using it on my own people feels... wrong.

With the sudden increase in people at home, an otherwise mediocre dinner nearly turned into chaos thanks to the continuous "activities" of Rias, Sona Sitri, and the others.

Phew.

Back in his room, Hiro locked the door and set up an entry-prohibited barrier.

Only then did he let out a breath.

Night raid?

They're dreaming.

Then he looked at the girl sprawled across his bed.

Short blue hair.

A green streak dyed into her bangs.

Almost asleep.

He fell silent.

Either the sound of the door or the fluctuation of magic woke her.

Xenovia's eyes shifted and met his.

"Oh, Hiro. You're finally here."

Using her core, she sat upright on the soft bed and smiled at him.

"I knew Rias and the others wouldn't miss a chance for a night raid, so I came early."

"But judging by you setting this up, you don't plan to let them in."

"That's perfect."

"Since I didn't conceive last time, this time you need to work harder."

Hiro pressed his right hand against the wall, confirming the barrier was intact.

Only then did his unnecessary worry fade.

"You're the one who needs to work harder, Xenovia."

He smiled lightly, shook his head, and walked forward.
