After much convincing, Erigald imstone was compelled to hire Ren. The pig needed to be gone, and in the event that things turn for the worse, Erigald felt safe knowing that Ren was new, and was not liked by others in the community, he was less likely to be avenged.
Erigald had one of the workers escort both Ren and Eldrad to the area, and Ren realized that this occupied field was quite close to his home. A walk of ten minutes past the glade would lead him into it from his home. They all stopped at the boundary of the field, any closer, and the boar would sniff them out, and rush in to attack.
"I am curious about how you will defeat this boar, you seem rather certain that you will. Are you a hunter?" Eldrad inquired.
"Never have been, but I know when to take risks when the situation demands it."
Ren could see short trees bearing fruits, and bushes with abundant berries. This pig had chosen a good spot.
Both the worker and Eldrad left Ren to his business. The young man watched the scenery sitting on a rock. He had his gaze fixed on one of the fruit bearing trees.
[You have obtained insight momentarily]
[Insight
The messages appeared just as he focused his gaze on one of the fruits, and strangely enough, his sight was never that good, and yet, he could see the hanging fruit hundreds of meters away.
[Red pome: A sweet red fruit, a common snack in the kingdoms Combec, and Eldrad. A staple source for wine production]
Ren withdrew his gaze, realizing that he had just developed a new skill. He turned to a bush right next to him, and gazed at it the same, and again, a plethora of information about the bush appeared.
He walked to his home to get his rifle, he would not be partaking in the hunt had he not had it. A shotgun with quite the power to it, two shots from it, and the beast was certain to drop dead.
He stared hard at the shotgun hoping to activate his insight skill but nothing came up.
"I guess just plants."
[13 days, 15 hours, 21 minutes]
'I still have time.'
Ren hurried to the orchard, rifle held tightly in his hands, scouting the scenery. He stepped through the rows of trees, and immediately he sensed that he had alerted a presence.
[Hunter sense: 50% attained]
'What's that?'
Farmers were seen as tough men, growing food for the nation, existing as the backbone of a populace, they ought to be tough, tough enough that putting down a wild beast should be no problem for them.
Except Ren did not fit that standard of a farmer. He had never slaughtered his farm animals, he had not been put in a situation where he had to kill one nor had he been forced to kill a predator. The thief he had shot to death had pushed him, it was either him or the thief back then, and it was a choice made in terror. Now, it was either Ren or the wild boar.
He heard the loud thumping of hooves, powered grunts as the great boar approached him. Suddenly, the devil boar burst out a bush at Ren's left flank. From the direction of the sound, Ren had thought that it was coming straight at his front, he had been tricked.
The boar did not stop, instead plunging ahead with great momentum, its two large tusks intent on impaling him.
Hunter sense gave Ren just enough time for him to escape getting impaled, though he got grazed by the creature's snort, handing him quite a bad bruise.
He quickly positioned himself, and turned the rifle around, letting out a shot.
POW!
Ren missed the first shot, the bullet encasing itself in a tree trunk. The boar was frightened by the sound, Ren saw how it winced and recoiled from it.
He got a good look at this great boar. Grey fur covered its skin, it stood large and tall—nearing Ren's shoulders, and it was wide as it was tall. A white froth escaped its nostrils, and its red eyes registered it as a maniacal beast.
Ren let out another shot, the boar moved away at the last minute avoiding the strike that would prove fatal, and instead, the bullet struck one of its two tusks, snapping one off, the bullet ricocheting off track.
[Flourim great wild boar: A great beast, crowned in bristles like iron spears, its tusks curved as crescent moons, born of deep woods and old blood. Where it feeds, silence follows.]
[Killing this beast would grant you +7 charisma, and + 3 Dexterity.]
The beast snorted and its nose squinted out the white froth.
"It has to be sick, and maybe that's what is making it violent. Could I help it somehow?"
The boar charged towards him again, "Maybe not!" Ren yelped, and rolled out of the way, the boar missing him yet again.
The creature spun to position itself to strike again, turning to meet Ren's rifle position right at its head.
Ren pulled the trigger, and the bullet went flying, sinking itself into the pig's skull, and felling it.
Ren stood up from his squat with a smile.
[You have killed the Flourim great wild boar, you have received +7 charisma, and +3 dexterity] Ren heard the system say cheerfully.
He walked to the corpse, and looked down on it.
[Dead Flourim great wild boar]
"That much is obvious. 10 gold coins bagged!" He laughed, any slower, and he would have been skewered like the hunter that came before him, he was incredibly lucky.
He then went back home to return the rifle.Upon returning to the corpse, he saw a small crowd about the dead boar including Eldrad. They all turned to him when he approached.
'The sound must have alarmed them.' Ren thought.
One of the villagers asked what was in all af their minds, "Did you do this?"
