Chapter 21 - Chapter 21: The Insect and the Quake

Chapter 21: The Insect and the Quake

Konoha's largest training arena was a sea of buzzing energy. Practically every student from the Ninja Academy was gathered here, their youthful figures burning with anticipation and nerves.

Given the era and the village's smaller size, there were no age-based divisions. All current students competed together. The graduates had already been formed into three-man cells under jounin leadership and were out on missions. So, this was it—the competition to crown the strongest among Konoha's newest generation.

The victor would be named the Chief Student, the de facto leader of the young shinobi. With that title came a significant tilt in the village's training resources and recognition—a true "Child of the Fire" in the making, the ultimate honor every Konoha youth dreamed of.

Originally, midterms were more subdued affairs. But with the Second Shinobi World War looming on the horizon, Sarutobi Hiruzen had made a strategic decision. The village needed to identify and galvanize its future fighters, and fast. Hence, this grand spectacle.

Due to the number of participants, a lottery system was used. Winners would face winners, losers against losers, in a continuous, randomized bracket designed for maximum fairness.

Before the drawing even began, the atmosphere was cranked to a new level by the arrival of the Third Hokage himself. Sarutobi Hirzuen stood before the sea of young faces, a figure of immense authority and aspiration.

"Young leaves of Konoha! The future of this village rests on your shoulders!" His voice, amplified by chakra, rolled across the arena. "Burn with your Will of Fire! Strive with everything you have!"

The speech was met with a thunderous roar of approval. Young blood was easily stirred by such calls to glory.

Shinra, standing amidst the cheering crowd, remained unmoved. Will of Fire slogans held little appeal. His focus was singular: the prize. Specifically, the monetary value of the prize. He needed meat. Mountains of it.

As Hiruzen finished, his gaze, sharp and assessing, swept over the crowd and lingered for a fraction of a second on Shinra. A glint of keen expectation flashed in his eyes.

The competition began with the mass lottery. When Shinra looked at the name on his first-round slip, an interesting smile touched his lips.

"Aburame?"

He'd drawn a member of Konoha's venerable Hidden Insect Clan. And not just any member—Aburame Shibi, the future head of the clan.

On the other side, Shibi, upon seeing Shinra's name, adjusted his sunglasses imperceptibly, a slight frown forming. This newly-risen star who had one-punched an Uchiha was a concerning opponent. Concerning, but not insurmountable. As an Aburame, he had his own profound pride.

To expedite the early rounds, five matches were held simultaneously across the arena. Only when the field was whittled down to the final eight would the fights move to the central ring for one-on-one, spotlight duels. That was the stage everyone truly coveted.

Shinra's match was in the first wave.

He faced the tightly-wrapped, silent figure of Aburame Shibi. Shinra didn't underestimate him. The Aburame clan, who symbiotically hosted chakra-eating insects within their bodies, were versatile and dangerous—capable of offense, defense, and reconnaissance. A squad's power level jumped significantly with an Aburame present.

"Match begin! Seal of Confrontation!" the chunin referee announced.

Both competitors performed the seal swiftly, silently. The moment it was done, Shibi moved. He didn't advance; he retreated, putting immediate distance between them.

His hands flew through a series of seals. The large gourd-like container on his back shuddered.

Then, a black hurricane erupted.

A swirling, chittering vortex of countless insects poured forth, forming a dense, ominous tornado in seconds.

"Secret Technique: Insect Tornado!"

Shibi's chakra surged. He wasn't playing around; this was a major technique from the start. His strategy was clear: zone control. Don't let the close-combat specialist get near.

Buzzzzzzzz—

The angry, collective drone of thousands of insect wings filled the air, setting teeth on edge. The black swarm descended upon Shinra with terrifying speed.

Shinra didn't move. He stood perfectly still in the center of the approaching storm.

Seeing this, Shibi's frown deepened. He grew wary, immediately diverting a portion of the swarm to form a dense, protective "Insect Cocoon" around his own body.

But such a defense was paper-thin to what was coming.

BOOM.

A sound like a small explosion. Shinra vanished.

His speed was preposterous. The insect tornado, which had been milliseconds from engulfing him, closed on empty air.

Shibi's eyes widened behind his shades. Instinct took over. He kicked off the ground, trying to dodge.

He was too slow.

Hummmm…

A low, resonant hum filled Shibi's ears, a sound that seemed to vibrate his very bones. Then he felt it—a hand, edged with a faint, terrifying white light, had sheared straight through his defensive Insect Cocoon as if it were mist.

That glowing hand was now poised a mere inch from his throat. He could feel the destructive power radiating from it, a force that promised to tear him apart molecule by molecule if it so much as twitched.

The chakra-eating parasites, a nightmare for most ninja, were useless. The moment Shinra activated his tremor ability, an imperceptible vibrational field surrounded him. The insects couldn't—wouldn't—approach. It was an absolute defense against such swarms.

Shibi froze, a cold sweat breaking out under his high collar. He had never been so acutely aware of his own mortality.

"I… concede," he forced out, the words bitter but necessary.

The gap was undeniable. It was a chasm. Shinra hadn't just beaten him; he had rendered his entire clan's primary fighting style obsolete with a single, effortless movement. From start to finish, Shinra had only used one hand.

The match was over in under ten seconds.
