Chapter 12 - Chapter 12: The Aftermath

Chapter 12: The Aftermath

Quiet.

Utter, profound quiet.

The vast training ground was so still that the sigh of the breeze was deafening. Every student, every onlooker, was frozen in place as if turned to stone. The genius of the Uchiha clan lay sprawled in the dirt, a crumpled, ignominious heap.

And Shinra stood over the scene, his arm still extended from the finishing punch. The breeze tousled his black hair, revealing the sharp lines of his face, now wearing a faint, unsettling smirk. In that moment, even the blazing sun overhead seemed like a mere spotlight for him.

All eyes were fixed on the young man in the circle. But the gaze was no longer one of contempt or pity.

It was shock. Awe. Disbelieving envy.

The 'waste,' the 'dead-last,' had just delivered the most resounding slap to their collective faces.

"Wow… he's… kind of handsome!"

A girl's breathy, involuntary whisper finally shattered the suffocating silence. It was like a spell breaking. The crowd erupted into a cacophony of gasps, exclamations, and frantic whispers. It felt surreal, like waking from a shared, impossible dream.

"This can't be real!"

"That bastard! When did he get so strong?!"

Ichiro Miyamura's face was a storm cloud of fury and disbelief. He glared at Shinra, his mind rejecting the evidence of his own eyes. An Uchiha prodigy, taken down by the academy's punching bag? It was absurd!

But reality was undeniable. More pressing than his grudge now was the unconscious Uchiha heir at his feet. The Uchiha clan was at the height of its influence. If anything serious happened to Masaki under his watch… his career in Konoha would be over.

He rushed over, relief washing over him as he checked Masaki's pulse. The boy was unconscious, his abdomen badly bruised, but no bones were broken, no internal bleeding detected. Just knocked out cold by sheer, overwhelming force.

"Class dismissed!" Miyamura barked, not looking at the students. He shot Shinra one last venomous glare as he hoisted Masaki over his shoulder. "To beat an Uchiha like this… you'll see consequences for this!"

"Hmph. I'll look forward to them," Shinra replied coolly, his smirk never wavering.

With a final, frustrated grunt, Miyamura shunshined away, leaving the students to their shock.

The farce was over. It had concluded with an ending no one could have scripted.

And from this moment forward, the narrative was rewritten. The dead-last was dead no more. In a single, earth-shattering punch, Shinra had catapulted himself from a joke to a genius who had just toppled one of the academy's brightest stars. It was a miracle no one could comprehend.

In the crowd, Uzumaki Kushina stood frozen, her violet eyes wide, a sheen of unshed tears glistening within them. She was still processing the reality of Shinra's victory, the sheer impossibility of it.

Shinra ignored the buzzing crowd and their stunned stares. He walked straight to her, the hard edges of his expression softening.

"Sorry for worrying you," he said, his voice gentle. He reached out and ruffled her bright red hair, his touch familiar but now carrying a new weight.

"..."

Kushina looked up at him, her lips pressed together. Backlit by the sun, Shinra looked different. He looked like a prince from one of those storybooks, radiant and a little untouchable. Something deep in her chest gave a strange, painful, wonderful lurch.

"Idiot!" she finally managed, her pale cheeks flushing a deep crimson. She swatted his hand away, wiping at the corners of her eyes with a rough, embarrassed motion, and huffed. But there was no real anger in it, only a flustered, overwhelming relief.

Class was dismissed early, but the buzz was just beginning. Shinra's victory over Masaki Uchiha was the only topic on anyone's lips. His name, once spoken with derision, would be whispered with awe across Konoha by nightfall.

Just as Shinra and Kushina were walking out the academy gates, a figure stepped directly into their path.

It was a young woman, a few years their senior, already wearing a Konoha forehead protector—a full-fledged genin. Her expression was stormy.

"You. You're Shinra, right?" she demanded, hands on her hips.

"Hm? Looking for me?" Shinra's lips quirked. He had a good idea why.

"You know exactly why! Did you beat up my little brother yesterday?!" she snapped, her voice rising.

"He picked the fight," Shinra said calmly, unfazed. "I was just providing some much-needed discipline, since your parents clearly didn't. Can't blame me for the dog biting Lu Dongbin, can you?"

The woman blinked. So did Kushina beside him. They both stared at him, confusion overriding their anger.

"Who are you calling a dog?!" the woman sputtered. "And I'm looking for you, Shinra! Who's this 'Lu Dongbin'?"

Shinra froze for a second, a rare moment of mental backtracking. Right. Different world.

At that exact moment, the boy in question—Tomihisa—rounded the corner and saw the scene. His face, already pale, drained of all remaining color. Pure terror seized him.

"Eh! Sis! There you are!" he squeaked, his voice an octave too high. He sprinted forward like a frightened rabbit. "I've been looking all over for—mmph!"

Before his sister could finish another sentence, Tomihisa launched himself at her, clamping a desperate hand over her mouth. "N-nice weather! We should go! Right now! Very important family… stuff!"

He began physically dragging her backward, his strength fueled by sheer panic. His sister was just a recent graduate! Masaki Uchiha could wipe the floor with her, and Masaki had just been one-punched by this monster! He had no desire to get his own ears flicked into next week again, and he certainly didn't want to imagine what Shinra might do to his sister.

"Mmmph! Tomi, what are you—mmph!" The woman's protests were muffled as her younger brother, displaying unexpected strength, hauled her around the corner and out of sight.

Shinra and Kushina were left standing alone at the academy gate, staring at the empty space where the furious genin and her terrified brother had just vanished.

A long, awkward beat of silence passed, broken only by the distant chatter of other students.

Kushina slowly turned her head to look at Shinra, her expression a perfect blend of bewilderment and dawning amusement.

Shinra could only shrug, the ghost of a laugh finally escaping him as they stood there, mildly bewildered, in the suddenly very quiet afternoon.
