Chapter 82 - Chapter 81 — A Day Without Edges

Meiji 41 (1908) — Early Summer

Butterfly Estate

For the first time in weeks—

No crow arrived at dawn.

No urgent footsteps.

No blood on the wind.

No names whispered with fear.

The Butterfly Estate woke slowly, like it was afraid to break the spell.

Kai noticed it first while standing in the kitchen.

"…It's quiet."

Shinobu, seated at the table with her chin resting on her hand, smirked. "What, missing chaos already?"

He shook his head. "Just… noticing."

Kanae stretched near the doorway, sunlight catching in her hair. "The reports came in last night. Lower-rank units are holding their ground. Hashira deployments are down."

Mitsuri, half-asleep at the table, brightened instantly. "Does that mean—?"

"Yes," Kanae said gently. "A rest day."

Mitsuri gasped dramatically. "A real rest day?!"

Shinobu closed her eyes. "No lab. No patients. No poison refinement."

Kai tied his apron.

"…I'll cook."

Three pairs of eyes locked onto him.

Mitsuri clasped her hands. "He's in cooking mode!"

---

The Smell of Home

The kitchen filled with warmth.

Rice steaming. Broth simmering. Fresh vegetables chopped with steady hands.

Kai moved without hurry—sleeves rolled up, hair tied back loosely. He hummed quietly, unaware of the way three girls watched him like this was the best sight they'd had in days.

Kanae leaned against the counter. "You know," she said softly, "you take care of people even when no one asks."

He shrugged. "Someone has to."

Shinobu tilted her head. "You say that like it's obvious."

Mitsuri peeked into the pot. "It smells amazing…!"

Breakfast turned into brunch. Brunch lingered into lazy conversation.

For once—

No one rushed.

---

"I'm Cat Day, Again"

It happened without warning.

Kai sat down on the veranda, bowl in hand, finished eating.

Mitsuri appeared first.

She didn't say anything.

Just… sat down—and gently lowered her head onto his lap.

Kai froze.

"…Mitsuri?"

She smiled up at him. "I'm a cat today."

Kanae followed immediately, sitting on his other side and resting her shoulder against him. "Mm. Me too."

Shinobu paused a few steps away.

She stared.

"…You're both ridiculous."

Then she sighed, walked over—

And sat between his knees, leaning back against his chest.

"…I suppose," she muttered, "I can tolerate being a cat for one afternoon."

Kai blinked.

Once.

Twice.

"…I see."

He set the bowl aside.

"Then," he said calmly, "I'll spoil my cats."

---

Lap Pillows & Lazy Sunlight

Mitsuri curled more fully into his lap, pink-and-green hair spilling across his legs. Kanae closed her eyes, content, fingers lightly gripping his sleeve.

Shinobu pretended she wasn't enjoying it—

Until Kai's hand gently began to massage her scalp.

She stiffened.

"…Hey."

"Too much?"

"…No. Continue."

Mitsuri purred—actually purred.

"That feels so nice…"

Kanae smiled, eyes still closed. "You're very good at this."

Kai chuckled quietly. "Experience."

"With us?" Shinobu asked.

"With patients," he replied smoothly.

She huffed. "Liar."

His fingers moved—slow, careful, unhurried. Brushing hair back. Tracing circles. No expectations. No danger.

Just touch that asked nothing in return.

Minutes passed.

Then longer.

Mitsuri fell asleep first.

Kanae followed soon after, breath even and soft.

Shinobu lasted the longest—until she realized she'd stopped thinking.

"…This is unfair," she murmured, already half-gone.

Kai smiled.

---

Kai's POV — Letting Go

Three warm weights rested against him.

For once, he wasn't calculating poison ratios.

Wasn't listening for threats.

Wasn't preparing to die.

He looked down at them.

And something in his chest loosened.

This, he thought, is what we've been protecting.

Not glory.

Not victory.

Moments like this.

He brushed a strand of hair from Mitsuri's face. Adjusted Kanae's position so her neck wouldn't ache. Gently supported Shinobu's head when it tilted.

No one stirred.

Kai leaned back against the pillar, eyes closing.

"…We're okay," he whispered.

And for the first time in a long while—

He believed it.

---

Late Afternoon Wake-Up

Sunlight shifted.

Shinobu stirred first.

She blinked. Noticed where she was. Who she was leaning on.

"…Oh."

Mitsuri yawned loudly. "Mmm… nap…"

Kanae opened one eye, amused. "Did we fall asleep?"

Kai smiled down at them. "All three."

None of them moved.

Mitsuri hugged his waist. "I don't want to."

Kanae nodded. "Me neither."

Shinobu hesitated—then leaned back again.

"…Five more minutes."

Kai laughed softly.

"Alright," he said. "Five more."

The Butterfly Estate stayed quiet.

And the world—

Waited.
