😈 Parent Teasing — The Aftermath

Dinner was suspiciously quiet.

Not the comfortable kind.

The waiting kind.

Kai noticed it halfway through his bowl of rice—Mrs. Kanroji smiling a little too sweetly, Mrs. Kocho stirring soup far longer than necessary.

Mitsuri sensed it instantly.

"…Why are you both looking at us like that?" she asked, squirming.

Mrs. Kanroji clasped her hands. "Oh, no reason."

Mrs. Kocho nodded. "Just thinking about how… cozy the house felt earlier."

Silence.

Shinobu choked on her tea.

Kanae blinked once. "…Earlier?"

Mrs. Kanroji tilted her head. "Three cats on one lap is very impressive balance."

Mitsuri's face went nuclear. "M-MAMA?!"

Shinobu slammed her cup down. "You were watching?!"

"Only briefly," Mrs. Kocho replied serenely. "Long enough to see trust."

Kanae laughed first—soft, embarrassed, genuine. "I suppose we were… indulgent."

Kai bowed slightly. "…I'm sorry."

Both mothers waved it off immediately.

"No apologies," Mrs. Kanroji said warmly. "You looked happy."

Mrs. Kocho added, "That's rare enough to be protected."

The teasing didn't continue.

That somehow made it worse.

🌧 The Rain

The rain started late that night.

Not violent—persistent.

By morning, the world was wrapped in grey and silver, the air cool and close. Training was canceled without discussion. Errands postponed. The river swollen and restless.

So they stayed inside.

Again.

Mitsuri curled up first this time, blanket half-draped over Kai's shoulders.

Kanae followed, sitting close enough that their sleeves touched.

Shinobu hesitated.

Then sighed.

"…Move," she muttered, sitting down and leaning back.

Kai didn't comment.

Rain tapped against the roof. Steady. Patient.

No one spoke for a long time.

💭 Kai — When It Changed

At some point, I realized something dangerous.

I wasn't enduring this.

I wasn't tolerating their closeness out of duty or habit.

I wanted it.

The weight of Mitsuri against my side. Kanae's calm presence, grounding. Shinobu's quiet trust—given without words.

I thought back.

To when Mitsuri stopped apologizing for leaning on me. To when Kanae let herself rest instead of watching. To when Shinobu stopped pretending she didn't need anyone.

And to when I stopped thinking of myself as standing between them and the world—

And started thinking of us as something shared.

Not obligation.

Choice.

My chest warmed.

"…So that's when," I whispered to myself.

The rain kept falling.

Girls POV — Quiet Truths

Mitsuri:

I knew it already.

I'd known it for a while.

Being close to Kai didn't make me smaller—it made me brave.

I smiled into the blanket and pretended I was still just a cat.

Kanae:

Watching him realize something and not panic…

That made me happy.

No fear. No rush.

Just warmth growing naturally.

I stayed where I was.

Shinobu:

I noticed his breathing change.

Steadier. Softer.

…Idiot.

If this was where we were going, then—

I wasn't moving either.

---

The rain slowed by afternoon.

No one did.

Kai looked down at them—three faces relaxed, content, flushed with quiet happiness.

He smiled.

Not bright. Not teasing.

Just full.

Outside, the world waited.

Inside, no one was in a hurry.
