Chapter 57 - Chapter 57 — The Day We Were Cats

Kai POV (Primary)

Later That Afternoon

Meiji 39 (1906)

---

At some point, I stopped pretending this was temporary.

Three heads rested on my lap.

One pink. One dark. One violet-black.

All asleep.

I exhaled slowly, careful not to disturb them.

Mitsuri was sprawled sideways, arms loosely wrapped around my leg, breathing deep and steady. Kanae leaned more neatly, posture instinctively composed even in sleep. Shinobu—who would deny this later—had curled just enough to hook her fingers lightly into my sleeve.

Cats, I thought.

Very spoiled cats.

---

My hands moved without thinking.

Gentle pressure at Mitsuri's temples—slow circles, just like she liked. Her brow smoothed instantly, a tiny pleased sound escaping her.

Kanae's hair slipped through my fingers like silk. I brushed it back carefully, thumb tracing a calming rhythm at her scalp. Her breathing evened further.

Shinobu… required precision.

Too much pressure and she'd wake. Too little and she'd frown.

I adjusted until her shoulders relaxed.

Success.

I smiled.

---

This was strange.

Not uncomfortable. Not heavy.

Just… full.

I used to think closeness was something you managed. Something you rationed so it didn't distract you.

Now—

Now I understood.

This wasn't distraction.

This was grounding.

---

I looked down at them.

Mitsuri, who once feared being too much, now took up space without apology. Kanae, who carried everyone gently, allowing herself to rest. Shinobu, who had learned—slowly—that leaning wasn't weakness.

My chest warmed.

Fondness, I realized, wasn't loud.

It was this quiet ache behind the ribs. This instinct to stay still so no one woke too soon.

"…You're all ridiculous," I murmured.

None of them disagreed.

---

Mitsuri — POV

Warm.

That was the first thing.

Warm and steady and safe.

Kai's lap felt like the center of the world. His fingers moved in slow, loving patterns through my hair, like he wasn't in a hurry to be anywhere else.

I like being a cat, I thought sleepily.

Cats didn't have to apologize. Cats were allowed to want attention. Cats were loved for existing.

I smiled in my sleep.

I'll stay like this a little longer.

---

Kanae — POV

I knew exactly what I was doing.

Leaning in. Closing my eyes. Letting myself rest.

I trusted him.

That was the quiet miracle.

Kai's presence didn't demand anything from me. I didn't need to guide, protect, or reassure. I could simply be.

His fingers brushed my hair with care—not possessive, not hesitant.

Just kind.

So this is what it feels like, I thought, drifting, to be held without responsibility.

I allowed myself the luxury.

---

Shinobu — POV

If anyone asked—

I was not a cat.

I was merely… testing comfort dynamics.

Yes.

That was it.

Kai's hand rested lightly on my head, thumb barely moving, and somehow that was worse than if he'd been obvious about it.

Because it meant he noticed.

That he adjusted. That he cared.

My grip tightened slightly on his sleeve.

I'll allow this, I decided. Just today.

---

Kai — POV

The sun dipped lower.

Light shifted. Dust settled.

None of them moved.

I stayed exactly where I was.

Four years ago, I would have worried about tomorrow. About strength. About responsibility.

Right now—

I was a lap. A place to rest. A quiet constant for three people who trusted me completely.

And I wouldn't trade that for anything.

I closed my eyes.

Just for a moment.
