Captain Rudra didn't answer right away.
He stood there silently, the faint hum of generators filling the corridor. His uniform was dusty, stained with dried blood that wasn't his. Slowly, he turned and began walking away.
"Come with me," he said without looking back.
Arjun hesitated for only a second before following.
They passed through several secured doors, each opening with a sharp mechanical hiss. Armed guards stood on both sides, their eyes alert, fingers resting near triggers. The air felt colder here—heavier.
They entered a long hallway with glass walls. Inside the rooms beyond the glass were things Arjun wished he hadn't seen.
Zombies—infected—were strapped to metal chairs, arms bound tightly, heads restrained with iron clamps. Some struggled weakly. Others were eerily still, heads hanging low. Scientists in protective suits moved around them, taking samples, writing notes, injecting substances through small openings in the restraints.
Arjun felt his stomach twist.
"So this is what happens to them," he whispered.
"This is what happens to everyone who survives long enough," Captain Rudra replied calmly.
They stopped in front of a steel door marked RESTRICTED ACCESS. Captain Rudra scanned his ID and pushed it open.
Inside was a smaller room—plain, dimly lit. A single table. Two chairs.
Captain Rudra finally sat down and gestured for Arjun to do the same.
"You screamed earlier," Captain Rudra said. "Not out of fear. Out of guilt."
Arjun clenched his fists. "They followed that tunnel because of me. I laughed at them. I told them it was fake."
Captain Rudra leaned forward. "Guilt can crush a man. Or it can sharpen him."
He paused, then asked quietly,
"Do you want revenge?"
The word echoed in Arjun's head. Images flashed before his eyes—his friends screaming, being dragged away, torn apart.
"Yes," he said, his voice steady despite the storm inside him.
Captain Rudra nodded. "Then listen carefully."
He stood up. "SHIELD is not just a shelter. It's the last line between humanity and extinction. We don't just hide—we go out. We study. We fight."
He looked straight into Arjun's eyes.
"If you stay here, you'll eat, sleep, and live while the world burns outside. If you come with me… you'll suffer. You'll see things that will never leave you."
Captain Rudra opened the door behind him.
"But you'll never be helpless again."
Arjun took a deep breath.
"I'm already suffering," he said, standing up. "I might as well make it mean something."
Captain Rudra gave a grim smile.
"Welcome to SHIELD's survivor program."
Training began the next morning.
