Deep within the Hokage's administrative complex, the late afternoon sun slanted through the tall wooden blinds of Hiruzen Sarutobi's private office.
The Third Hokage sat behind a wide oak desk piled high with parchment scrolls, mission logs, and supply requisitions from the ongoing war effort. Dressed in his red and white official robes, Hiruzen dipped his calligraphy brush into a well of black ink, carefully reviewing a casualty report from the grass front before signing his official seal at the bottom.
Standing directly on the carpet opposite his desk was Danzō Shimura. Leaning heavily on his dark wooden cane, his right eye bandaged and his single exposed eye cold as ice, Danzō held a rolled-up intelligence scroll in his hand.
"Our ANBU watchers in the civilian sector submitted this report two hours ago, Hiruzen," Danzō began, his raspy voice cutting through the quiet scratching of the Hokage's brush. "The Hyūga Branch boy, Akira, entertained the Uchiha girl, Izumi, at his estate yesterday. She remained on his property for hours and left at dusk carrying his summon beast back into the Uchiha compound."
Hiruzen did not immediately look up. He blew gently on the wet ink of the scroll to let it dry before setting his brush down on a porcelain rest. Reaching for his wooden pipe, he filled it with fresh tobacco, struck a small flame, and took a slow, deliberate puff, letting a thick plume of gray smoke drift toward the ceiling.
"They are six years old, Danzō," Hiruzen said softly, his voice full of quiet weariness. "They aren't even in the same Academy class, yet they found common ground and became friends. Children meet across grades, train together, and socialise. It is a completely natural part of growing up in this village."
"Uchiha children do not simply 'make friends' across clan boundaries," Danzō countered sharply, taking a heavy step forward until his cane thudded against the hardwood floor. "The Uchiha clan's resentment toward the village leadership has reached a boiling point since the Nine-Tails attack. They are isolated, bitter, and actively seeking influence. Now we see a Hyūga prodigy—one possessing exceptional chakra reserves, refined taijutsu, and clear strategic intelligence—establishing close, private ties with an Uchiha. What if this isn't innocent play? What if the Hyūga and Uchiha elders are using these children to quietly build a clandestine alliance behind our backs?"
Hiruzen paused mid-puff, turning his dark, tired eyes up to face his old teammate. A look of total speechlessness settled over his weathered features.
"A secret political alliance between two founding clans, meticulously brokered through six-year-olds sharing sweet milk and playing with a fox?" Hiruzen asked, shaking his head in quiet disbelief. "Danzō, hear yourself speak. Your paranoia is clouding your judgment to an absurd degree. Not every interaction in this village is a covert political conspiracy."
"You are blind to the dark realities of clan politics, Hiruzen!" Danzō barked, his knuckles turning white around the head of his cane. "The Hyūga are proud, secluded, and hoard their dōjutsu zealously. The Uchiha are a powder keg waiting for a spark. Evil seeds grow in the dark when left unchecked! If the Hyūga Clan is beginning to sympathize with the Uchiha's grievances, we must act before a coup takes root. Place the Hyūga Clan under strict, around-the-clock ANBU surveillance, just as we did with the Uchiha!"
"Enough!" Hiruzen slammed his palm down onto his desk, the sudden sharp crack echoing off the office walls. His suppressed chakra flared for a brief, heavy second, causing the papers on his desk to flutter. "The Hyūga Clan has been loyal to Konoha since its founding! They sacrifice their own Branch family members to protect the secrets of the Byakugan for this village. I will not insult their honor and alienate another major clan over baseless suspicions born from a childhood friendship. I am the Hokage, Danzō!"
Danzō glared across the wooden desk at Hiruzen, the silence between them stretching long and suffocating.
"You are soft, Hiruzen," Danzō whispered softly, turning on his heel. His dark cloak swished around his legs as he strode toward the heavy office door. "You treat this village like a peaceful home, but it is a military state. One day, your sentimentality will cost Konoha everything."
Stepping out of the Hokage building into the warm afternoon air, Danzō did not return to the Root underground facility. Instead, flanked by two masked Root operatives gliding silently through the rooftops above, he walked directly toward the traditional, high-walled estates of the Hyūga Clan.
Passing through the massive wooden gates of the main estate, Danzō was escorted into a private tea room reserved for internal clan governance. Sitting on pristine tatami mats were two prominent Main House elders—Elder Genshin, the sharp-eyed Second Elder, and Elder Kōzo, the rotund, white-bearded Third Elder.
The moment Danzō crossed the threshold, both elders quickly stood up and offered deep, deferential bows.
"Lord Danzō, what an unexpected honor," Elder Kōzo said smoothly, fanning himself with a nervous, polite smile. "Please, take a seat. To what do we owe the rare privilege of a senior council advisor's visit?"
Danzō remained standing, looking down at them with cold, penetrating authority. "I come with serious concerns regarding the loyalty, discipline, and awareness of the Hyūga Clan."
Both elders froze mid-gesture, their polite expressions instantly evaporating. "L-Loyalty?" Elder Genshin stammered, caught completely off guard. "Lord Danzō, the Hyūga Clan has always served Konoha with absolute devotion! What could possibly prompt such an alarming accusation from the council?"
"Your clan's junior members are freely entertaining Uchiha children at private residences," Danzō stated coldly, letting the words hang in the air like heavy frost. "In these tense, uncertain times, such unauthorized contact gives the distinct impression that the Hyūga Clan is quietly taking sides with the Uchiha against the Hokage's council."
Cold, panicked sweat broke out across Elder Kōzo's forehead. "We assure you, Lord Danzō! The Main House has strictly forbidden any official diplomatic contact with the Uchiha leadership! Whatever childish foolishness you witnessed was entirely unsanctioned!"
Danzō offered a faint, shadowy smile, watching them scramble and grovel to protect their status. He had them right where he wanted them.
"If you wish to clear your name and prove the Hyūga Clan's prestige and absolute loyalty to the village, you must demonstrate your martial strength," Danzō said, his voice smooth as silk. "Look at the Uchiha. Their prodigy, Itachi, has already graduated from the Academy and serves as a full ninja of Konoha. Meanwhile, the Hyūga Clan allows your own remarkably talented youth to sit idly in elementary classrooms, playing house."
Elder Genshin blinked, his brow furrowing deep as he processed the connection. "Are you referring to... the Branch House boy? Hyūga Akira?"
"Indeed," Danzō replied. "A boy possessing his level of skill and chakra reserves should not be wasting his time in basic Academy lectures or playing with Uchiha children. He should graduate early and prove the Hyūga Clan's military glory on active shinobi missions."
"Ah, that ungrateful, reckless brat!" Elder Kōzo burst out, scolding the boy's name instantly in front of Danzō to thoroughly wash the Main House's hands of any blame. "We have received reports of him wandering around freely and fraternizing with Uchiha children outside his class! As a Branch House member, his entire existence belongs to the protection and glory of the clan! He has no right to bring even a shadow of suspicion upon us!"
"Lord Danzō speaks with great wisdom," Elder Genshin agreed hastily, bowing his head deeply. "As a Branch member, it is his duty to bring honor to the Hyūga name through service, not idle play. We will order his early graduation from the Academy immediately!"
"Good," Danzō said quietly, his purpose fulfilled. He turned on his heel without another word and walked out into the corridor. "Do not disappoint the council again."
As Danzō navigated the pristine corridors of the Hyūga compound, his single eye glinted with cold calculation. He had deliberately chosen not to demand Akira's recruitment directly into Root. The Cursed Caged Bird Seal etched into the boy's forehead gave the Main House absolute, unquestioned control over his life and death—a severe logistical boundary that made forcibly commandeering him impractical. Furthermore, placing a Byakugan user in Root risked exposing the clan's sensitive dōjutsu secrets to the broader shadow network.
Sending the boy onto the lethal frontlines early through the elders' own heavy-handed commands, however, served his purposes just as well.
