Chapter 22 - Chapter 22: Growth and Expansion

Standing before the full-length mirror in his bedroom, Akira adjusted the high collar of his dark training shirt.

He stared at his reflection, noting the subtle changes time had brought. Almost six years old now, he had grown taller, his frame leaner and firmer from relentless training, and his pale Byakugan eyes held a calm, sharp clarity well beyond his years.

A full year had passed since the catastrophe of the Nine-Tails' attack, and Konoha had transformed significantly in its wake.

With the tragic passing of Minato Namikaze, Hiruzen Sarutobi had stepped back up out of retirement to assume command as the acting Third Hokage, stabilizing the village's leadership. Deep underground, Danzō Shimura was forced to swallow his bitter fury; despite exhaustive investigations, he had found absolutely zero leads regarding the daring thief who had cleaned out his vault. Even the Aburame clan's tracking insects had lost the trail entirely inside the drainage system.

Sensibly anticipating blood in the water, the Leaf leadership immediately mobilized massive squads of shinobi and deployed them directly to the Fire Country borders to project strength and deter neighbor nations from launching an invasion. Because of this swift military posture, the major rival villages didn't dare cause any trouble. Konoha entered a strange, dual reality—a short period of delicate peace on the surface, beneath which ran a fast-forwarded state of silent panic due to the catastrophic human and financial losses suffered during the Nine-Tails' rampage.

Domestically, the political landscape had shifted as well. The Uchiha clan had been forcibly relocated to the outer edges of the village perimeter, isolated under the guise of village defense and tight Anbu surveillance. Even the Hyūga clan experienced subtle internal movements, reinforcing their defensive arrays and tightening clan security to preserve their standing among the noble houses.

Akira had exploited the chaotic post-disaster real estate crash to his complete advantage. Using the vast cash reserves he had accumulated over time, he quietly purchased the damaged properties adjacent to his home, expanding his plot and turning his standard house into a sprawling private villa compound.

When his rental shops in the commercial district were damaged and destroyed during the beast's rampage, he didn't panic. He promptly filed claims through the newly established Leaf Disaster Insurance Fund, securing substantial village subsidies to fully reconstruct and modernize his storefronts, which were now back to generating steady, passive income.

His covert operations following the night of the attack had also been a resounding success. Within ten days of the rampage, Akira had systematically retrieved almost all of his hidden Chakra Sealing Bowls scattered across the village ruins. While a few had been crushed under fallen structures, the vast majority survived intact, holding an immense reserve of dense, dark-orange Nine-Tails chakra locked securely in his underground vault.

With his newly expanded villa compound, Akira had ample space for remodeling and serious training. He expended a huge sum of money to construct a state-of-the-art private training field complete with hardened wooden dummies, weapon racks, and target ranges. To ensure complete privacy, he posted an official B-rank mission at the Ninja Task Hall, hiring specialized sealing barrier ninjas to erect multi-layered silence and concealment barriers around his entire residence.

His pets had also entered a rapid growth period over the past year, noticeably maturing into active young animals.

Snowy, now an energetic young fox with sleek white fur, had her very own custom-built freezing storage room inside the villa, kept permanently chilled with ice seals where she loved to nap on cold stone slabs. Po, a young, delightfully fluffy panda cub, roamed freely in a private fruit garden Akira had planted in the backyard, spending his days tumbling among bamboo stalks and sweet fruit trees.

Satisfied with his appearance in the mirror, Akira grabbed his dark pouch, strapped it to his thigh, and walked down the hallway. After feeding Snowy her chilled meats and tossing Po an armful of fresh sugar cane in the garden, Akira slid open the front gate of his villa compound and stepped out into the morning sunlight.

Akira arrived at the Ninja Academy grounds under a clear morning sky. He was already enrolled, but today wasn't a standard class day—the Academy was holding a special graduation ceremony for elite seniors fast-tracked from the three previous academic years.

As Akira neared the main entrance archway, a familiar voice called out to him.

"Akira! Over here!"

He turned to see his classmate trotting over to catch up. The two exchanged casual greetings as they walked side-by-side through the bustling courtyard. His friend looked around with a wide, awe-struck expression, leaning in slightly as if sharing exclusive gossip.

"Did you hear?" his classmate whispered with genuine admiration. "There's actually a student from our own enrollment year who's graduating today! Skipping three whole years in one go... it's unheard of!"

Akira didn't need to ask for a name, but his classmate blurted it out anyway, practically beaming with vicarious pride. "It's Uchiha Itachi! The young master of the Uchiha clan! Everyone's talking about him."

Akira gave a slow, measured nod, keeping his voice light and neutral. "The Uchiha clan really produces exceptional geniuses."

Externally, he maintained a face of mild respect. Internally, however, Akira offered a much more cynical assessment. "Geniuses, sure... but more accurately, a clan of emotion-driven, psychopathic geniuses."

The two made their way through the crowded hallways, dodging older students rushing toward the main auditorium. Sliding open the door to their classroom, they walked in, found their usual seats near the back row, and sat down together.
