Chapter 5 - Whispers of the Null

Victory did not bring peace.

Kael learned that the moment he returned to the dormitory.

The corridors that once echoed with laughter now fell silent when he passed.

Noble students avoided his gaze, while others stared too long, eyes filled with something far worse than hatred.

Fear.

He shut the door to his room and leaned against it, exhaling slowly.

So this is what winning feels like.

News of the duel spread faster than wildfire.

By nightfall, Kael's name had reached every House floor, every instructor's chamber, and places far deeper than the academy itself.

A crestless boy had defeated a Blood House heir.

Not by overpowering him.

But by denying him.

Lysar sat cross-legged on Kael's bed, adjusting his glasses with an uneasy expression.

"You shouldn't have won that cleanly," he muttered. "You broke an unspoken rule."

Kael frowned. "I didn't cheat."

"That's the problem," Lysar replied. "You proved lineage isn't absolute."

Silence lingered.

Lysar stood and walked toward the window, lowering his voice.

"The Houses won't forgive that."

Later that night, long after curfew bells rang, Kael felt it.

A presence.

The air in the room grew heavy. The lantern flickered. Shadows bent unnaturally along the walls.

Then he saw it.

Carved into the underside of his desk was a symbol he had never seen before a broken circle intersected by a vertical line.

It pulsed faintly.

Lysar's face drained of color.

"…That's not possible."

Kael turned sharply. "You know it?"

Lysar swallowed. "That's the mark of The Null."

The name hit harder than any spell.

"They were erased from public history,"

Lysar continued. "A faction that believed bloodline magic corrupted the world. They opposed the Houses… and lost."

Kael stared at the symbol.

"So why me?"

Lysar hesitated.

"Because they don't create power," he said slowly. "They find anomalies."

The mark began to glow brighter. Kael felt a pull not physical, but mental. A whisper brushed the edge of his consciousness.

Authority… recognizes Authority.

Visions flooded his mind.

Ancient academies burning.

Houses slaughtering dissenters.

A throne buried beneath layers of seals.

And a child crestless standing alone in the ruins.

Kael staggered back, breathing hard.

Lysar caught him. "Hey! Focus Kael!"

The visions faded.

But the weight remained.

"They planted me here," Kael whispered.

Lysar didn't deny it.

"The Null manipulate events from the shadows. If they marked you… then your admission wasn't chance."

Anger stirred in Kael's chest.

"So I'm a weapon?"

"No," Lysar said firmly. "You're a variable. Even they don't fully understand Authority magic."

A sudden pressure crushed the room.

The ward crystals above the door flared violently.

Lysar's eyes widened. "We're not alone."

The walls shimmered as a surveillance spell activated one used only by high-ranking faculty.

A distorted voice echoed faintly.

"Kael… you continue to surprise us."

The Head Instructor's presence bled through the spell.

"Know this," the voice continued. "Whatever games you think you're playing… the academy always collects its debts."

The spell vanished.

Silence returned.

But something had changed.

Kael clenched his fists.

"They're watching me."

Lysar nodded grimly. "And now… so is the Null."

Kael looked again at the mark beneath his desk.

Two paths lay before him.

Obey the academy. Survive quietly. Be erased slowly.

Or…

Seek the truth buried beneath Astraeus Dominion the throne sealed under lies, blood, and fear.

Kael made his decision.

"If they planted me," he said quietly, "then I'll decide how I grow."

Lysar smiled faintly. "Then you'd better get stronger. Fast."

Far below the academy, ancient seals trembled.

And somewhere unseen, a voice whispered with satisfaction:

"The anomaly has chosen."
