Chapter 74 - Chapter 73 — Wards and Will

Year: X780

Season: Mid-Autumn

Location: Magnolia Town — Lakeside Outskirts

Age: Ren (15)

---

The first rune sank into the earth with a sound like a held breath finally released.

Ren knelt at the edge of the property, fingers glowing faint silver-blue as he traced the formation line by line. The lake reflected the pattern back at him—circles nested within circles, intent layered over intent. This wasn't a guild hall. It wouldn't become one. That was the point.

"Barrier will flex," he muttered, more to the magic than to himself. "Invite warmth. Refuse crowds."

The ground hummed in agreement.

By noon, the house wore its enchantments like a second skin.

---

The Wards

They were elegant. Not loud.

Boundary Sense: The house knew who belonged.

Pressure Diffusion: Too many bodies? The air gently pushed back—subtle nausea, wandering attention, the sudden urge to leave.

Noise Dampening: Laughter stayed laughter. Roars stayed outside.

Intent Filter: Friendly chaos could pass. Destructive chaos… couldn't.

Ren wiped sweat from his brow, satisfied. "That should—"

The barrier cracked like thin ice.

Natsu's voice echoed from inside. "HEY REN DID YOU DO SOMETHING COOL—"

The wards collapsed.

Ren stared. "…Of course."

---

Broken. Every. Day.

It became routine.

Morning: Ren re-lays a section.

Afternoon: Happy flies through a threshold at Mach enthusiasm.

Evening: Gray argues with the house and wins out of spite.

Night: Someone slams a door too hard because Natsu lost at cards.

The barrier didn't fail because it was weak.

It failed because Fairy Tail was Fairy Tail.

Ren accepted this with tired grace.

Erza did not.

---

Erza's Law

The moment the third vase shattered—not broken, shattered—Erza's presence filled the room like drawn steel.

"No one," she said calmly, "touches a wall. A pillar. A window. Or the floor."

Natsu opened his mouth.

Erza's glare sharpened.

"…Or the air," Happy added helpfully.

From that day on, Erza became the house's will made flesh.

She checked training areas personally. She assigned zones. She made a written list titled "Things You Will Pay For If You Break Them." It was three pages long.

Mira watched with a fond smile. Juvia hovered like a devoted sentinel, quietly repairing small scuffs before Ren even noticed.

"Erza," Ren tried once, gentle. "You don't have to—"

She cut him off, eyes fierce, voice unwavering. "This house is your effort made real. Every mission. Every night you didn't rest. I will not let it be treated lightly."

Then, softer—only for him. "Not ever."

Ren didn't argue again.

---

Evening, Lakeside

Ren renewed the outer circle at sunset, slower this time, accepting the truth of it. The house didn't need to be perfect. It needed to be protected enough.

Erza stood watch at the steps, arms crossed, red hair catching the dying light. Mira handed out drinks with gentle cheer. Juvia adjusted the rain flow so it fell around the roof, not on it.

Inside, chaos tried—tried—to bloom.

It didn't take.

The house stood.

Ren leaned back on his hands, breathing out. The wards glowed once… then settled.

"Alright," he said quietly. "Stay a home."

For tonight—

They did.
