Chapter 23 - Chapter 23: Corpsefire (Part 2)

What was wrong with this world? This Sorceress's fighting style was even more fierce than his own as a Paladin. There was no time to continue marveling as Corpsefire's mixed army pressed toward them. Majesty threw out a Cloak of Shadows, causing chaos among the enemy, and the four of them hurried to flee toward the cave exit.

They couldn't give up on this main quest. Leo opened his mini-map and found a narrow pass suitable for fighting many with few. "Wait, we can't go out. Undead creatures don't get tired; if they guard the entrance from now on, this place will become a dead end. Follow me, I know the terrain here. We'll eliminate them inside the cave."

The group fled to the pass, and Leo blocked the gap that only allowed two people to pass at a time. He addressed Incest: "Hello, are you a Sorceress?"

Leo's words seemed to provoke Incest, who responded coldly: "No, I am a warrior."

Seeing her annoyed look, Leo didn't dare speak further or ask more—whatever you say you are, you are.

"My name is Leo. Our squad accepted a commission from Lady Akara to rescue the Rogue squad. Have you also accepted this mission, Warrior?" It was best to talk her into it first; sharing the quest was the real priority.

"The monsters in the cave have united as one. I think our two parties should cooperate and complete this mission together."

Incest replied quickly: "Fine, but I have always cultivated alone; cooperation is my weak point. I will be responsible for assassinating the Fallen Shamans later."

"I'll be responsible for blocking this passage. Majesty, open fire with everything you've got. Gerdie, provide support. Let's try to finish the battle within an hour. Corpsefire hasn't appeared yet; I'm worried he might circle around from behind to flank us."

Having hastily agreed on the tactics, the monsters surged over. Currently, Leo was effectively wearing two sets of Ancient Armor. Combined with the defense from his other gear and the Shout buff doubling his defense, his total defense directly broke 1,000.

The Fallen and Zombies found it extremely difficult to bypass his defensive field and land a hit. Although he couldn't move while standing his ground here, he still had his shield, his bread and butter.

Leo stood like an ancient, towering mountain, completely blocking the monsters behind him. Not only that, the short mace in his hand danced rapidly, harvesting the lives of the monsters before him in great numbers.

Majesty was always somewhat constrained in small-scale battles, habitually saving her Mana. Now that she had a rare chance to go all out, five Lightning Sentries were neatly arranged by Leo's feet, spewing out a massive amount of Charged Bolts at once, while a net of lightning also covered the passage in front of Leo. The entire passage lit up with a brilliant white light; the monsters attacking the trio were scorched by the electricity, their health bars dropping like flowing water.

Gerdie wasn't having it easy either, constantly destroying Fallen corpses at the first opportunity to prevent the Shamans from resurrecting them, while timing the defense buffs for everyone and squeezing in a few arrows whenever she could. She was busy beyond belief.

Seeing their underlings constantly dying and the resurrection spells repeatedly intercepted, the Fallen Shamans shrieked in rage. They gave up on using resurrection and chose to volley fireballs at Leo.

Seeing the Shamans transform into a "Fireball Cult," Leo instantly switched to Resist Fire. The golden aura at his feet instantly turned into a red aura, and a cool energy surrounded him. His resistance soared; counting the 10% fire resistance from his new blue belt, it became 24 + 52 = 76 (Note 1), reducing fire damage by 76%.

A round of bombardment followed, filling the air with dust and smoke. Fortunately, the cave entrance was sturdy enough that no collapse occurred. Leo's health was down to 40%; he immediately used the charm space to heal, his health jumping back to 75%. His right hand continued to block monster attacks with his shield, while his left hand continuously downed Light Healing Potions.

Seeing Leo in danger, Majesty cast Cloak of Shadows to blind the monsters, buying time for Leo to restore his health.

Incest seized the opportunity and teleported directly behind the Fallen Shaman squad. The longsword in her hand blurred into a series of afterimages, intending to annihilate the Shamans before the monsters recovered from the blindness.

Only three Shamans remained. Incest was fighting with gusto, and a slight smile couldn't help but appear on her usually tense, pretty face. As long as they cleared these ranged attackers, they could safely kill the remaining monsters.

"Watch out!" Seeing a flash of blue hiding around the corner, Leo shouted in urgency and launched a Charge directly at Corpsefire. "Maintain the Cloak!"

Hearing Leo's warning, Incest immediately raised her shield to block. Corpsefire's signature move, Spectral Hit, was incredibly powerful. Her buckler was smashed into scattered pieces, and the remaining force of the attack slammed Incest to the ground, her body stained with the blue glow of a cold chill.

Corpsefire's hand lit up with light once more. Incest lay on the ground with her limbs twisted; it seemed she could no longer escape Corpsefire's poisonous hands.

"No!" Leo's eyes nearly split with rage; the figure of the woman before him seemed to overlap with Reinhardt's.

The massive kinetic energy of the Charge combined with a Smite knocked aside the lesser monsters and slammed directly into Corpsefire's waist. Crushing Blow and Knockback triggered in succession; Leo seemed to hear the sickening crack of bone. Corpsefire's spine was directly broken, and he tumbled to the ground.

Leo had no heart to pursue. He leaned down and scooped up Incest. Her body smelled of blood and felt cold and stiff. Fortunately, her portrait in the party list hadn't darkened yet; she had a sliver of health left. Leo tightened his hold on the girl in his arms, wanting to transfer more warmth to her.

Taking advantage of Corpsefire being unable to rise and the other monsters still being blind, Leo shielded Incest and ran quickly back to the pass.

"Gerdie, heal her quickly! Don't forget we have Thawing Potions (Note 2)!" Leo handed the girl to Gerdie and turned back to hold the passage.

Gerdie bit her lip, setting Incest's twisted limbs back in place and correcting the displaced bones within her body. Once finished, she took out two Light Healing Potions, forced the girl's mouth open, and poured them in, followed by a Thawing Potion. Watching Incest's life slowly recover, Gerdie gave a complex sigh and rose to rejoin the battle.

With only three Fallen Shamans left, the ranged suppression could no longer put much pressure on Leo. The two women also concentrated their fire on the Shamans, and soon the three returned to Hell.

The rest was simple: just hold this intersection and slowly clear the remaining monsters.

30 minutes later, Corpsefire stood up again, his health bar full. Only a handful of Zombies remained on the field, while the surviving Fallen had long since fled without a trace.

Compared to Incest, who was still lying on the ground, monsters truly had an advantage—to recover from comminuted fractures so quickly.

Steeling his nerves to face this Cold Enchanted boss, Leo switched his aura to Resist Cold. An ice-blue light lit up at his feet, and a warm energy enveloped him.

Corpsefire was so furious he was nearly insane. He casually swatted away the underlings blocking his path and strode toward Leo. His eyes conveyed a single intent: You are a powerful knight; let us have a fair and honorable knightly duel.

Leo didn't know how those two blue, fish-like dead eyes could express such a complex meaning. He responded seriously with his own gaze: You too are a powerful knight; let us have a fair and honorable duel.

Corpsefire seemed to truly understand Leo's gaze; he let out a roar, and the remaining Zombies instantly stopped moving.

Leo stood still and took his stance, waiting for Corpsefire to approach. Once the distance was right, he shouted: "Ladies, get him!"

Corpsefire froze in the face of the trio's output. Leo was not at all polite, raising his short mace to greet Corpsefire's head. He triggered poison damage, and Corpsefire instantly turned vibrant green, joyfully receiving a "Green Buff."

Corpsefire truly went mad, roaring as he lunged at Leo. Unfortunately, Leo was well-prepared; with a sliding step, he dodged the lunge and slammed a Smite into Corpsefire's green face. This instantly triggered Crushing Blow and Open Wounds, and the green phantom face was flattened into a green board by the shield.

Corpsefire's claws flailed wildly at Leo, but Leo was far too slippery. Even with all his might, Corpsefire couldn't keep up with his movements. Instead, he was continuously pummeled by the mace, and who knew how many bones in his body were broken.

Seeing he could do nothing to Leo, he roared to summon his underlings. Unfortunately, before the other Zombies could approach, they were driven away by Gerdie's "dolphin-like" scream.

Unable to win the fight, unable to run away, and with his lackeys unable to help—and with the opponent's mace-class weapon dealing 50% extra damage to him—Corpsefire felt a humiliation worse than death.

Rather be a shattered jade than a whole tile. Corpsefire directly detonated all his remaining life force. Seeing Corpsefire's body begin to swell, he was about to unleash a powerful Frost Nova.

Leo didn't panic; he calmly placed his shield in front of him and downed a Thawing Potion. His cold resistance instantly broke the cap, becoming 86%. The magic Corpsefire launched with his life felt like a gentle breeze on his face.

"Corpsefire, I think you should be called 'Corpse-chill' now."
