Chapter 70 - Chapter 70: Mid-District Shadows – The Grandmaster's Ambush

Mid-District, Lingyuan City — December 25, 2028 — 8:00 p.m.

The fog in the mid-district hung thinner than in the lowers, yet tonight it felt heavier, almost deliberate. Neon signs from Bronze-tier merchant houses bled green and amber across polished stone streets, reflecting off wet cobblestones like shattered mirrors. Mei's Tranquil Feast Mid-District Branch stood quiet on a corner lot: charcoal-gray facade, gold lotus accents, private dining rooms upstairs for elites. The "Closed for Private Event" sign hung crooked on the front door, odd since no event had been scheduled.

Yue Lin arrived without sound.

Storm qi wrapped her like a second skin, thin crackling threads that bent light and muffled footsteps. Black training robes blended with the night, hood up, face shadowed. She crouched on the warehouse roof across the alley, eyes narrowed on the back entrance.

The qi traces were unmistakable: water-illusion veil, reflected qi pulsing like a hidden heartbeat. Strong. Far too strong for a minor enforcer.

Grandmaster Realm.

Her pulse kicked. Peak Master against Grandmaster was suicide for most. But she had the codex. She had storm-lotus. And she had no choice.

She dropped into the alley, landing in a crouch behind empty crates. Dagger drawn, thin black blade coated in silent lightning. She slipped through the back door.

The kitchen was dark, counters clean, ovens cold, faint smell of roasted duck and lotus root lingering from lunch service. No staff. Closed early, per the report.

The qi trace led upstairs to the private rooms.

Yue Lin moved up the narrow staircase, back to the wall, senses screaming. The Grandmaster knew she was here. She could feel his awareness like a mirror reflecting her own caution back at her.

Top of the stairs. Hallway lined with sliding doors. The farthest one hummed with reflected qi, strongest there.

She approached slowly.

A voice came from behind the door, low, calm, masculine.

"Come in, thief. I've been waiting."

Yue Lin slid the door open with her foot, dagger ready.

The room was lit by a single qi lantern, blue glow casting watery reflections across the low table and cushions. The enforcer sat cross-legged at the far end, mid-fifties, sharp features, indigo robes open at the chest to show silver lotus tattoos across his collarbone. Grandmaster Realm qi rolled off him like still water hiding depths.

He smiled thinly.

"Yue Lin. The Blue Lotus sends its regards."

She stepped inside, door sliding shut behind her.

"You know my name," she said flatly. "Makes this easier."

He chuckled, low, wet.

"Easier? For who? You're a Peak Master. Impressive for a rogue. But against me? You're a child playing with stolen toys."

Yue Lin's eyes narrowed.

"The codex isn't stolen anymore. It's mine."

He stood slowly, fluid, no wasted energy.

"It was forged in our mists. It belongs to us. And now… so will your corpse."

He moved, blinding fast. Water-illusion whip lashed out, razor-edged, mirrored surface meant to reflect her qi back tenfold.

Yue Lin dodged left, barely. The whip cracked against the wall, shattering wood into splinters that reflected her image back, distorted, mocking.

She countered, storm-lotus roots exploding from her palm, black petals unfurling, lightning arcing toward him.

He threw up a shield, perfect mirror dome. Her roots hit it, reflected back, lightning turning on her.

She rolled right, the attack grazing her shoulder, burning through robe and skin. Pain lanced hot and sharp.

He laughed.

"See? Your own power bites you. That's the beauty of reflection."

Yue Lin gritted her teeth, storm qi surging to numb the burn.

"You talk too much," she said.

She lunged, dagger leading, storm-lotus petals blooming in a cyclone around her. Lightning charged the air, making her hair stand on end.

He met her, water-illusion blades forming in his hands, mirrored edges gleaming. They clashed, dagger against blade, qi exploding in sparks of silver and blue.

He was stronger. Faster. Every block jarred her bones. Every parry sent reflected qi nipping at her meridians.

"You stole from us," he snarled mid-strike. "Fused our sacred codex with your filthy storm path. Do you know what that does? It corrupts and twists. Like you twisted our enforcers' bodies."

Yue Lin spun low, swept his legs. He jumped, countered with a downward slash.

She blocked, barely, dagger vibrating in her grip.

"They came for my family," she spat. "They got what they deserved."

He pressed harder, blades raining down in a mirrored barrage. Each strike reflected her dodges back at her, forcing her to twist unnaturally to avoid her own movements.

"Your 'family'?" he laughed. "That incestuous abomination? The heavens themselves curse you. And now we will too."

Yue Lin's anger flared. Storm qi exploded outward, black lotus petals forming a shield, lightning arcing off them to counter his reflections.

The hall shook. Wood splintered. The qi lantern shattered, plunging them into near-darkness lit only by their clashing auras, her silver-storm flashes against his blue-water gleams.

He adapted, illusions multiplying. Three copies of him now, each wielding mirrored blades, circling her.

"Which one is real?" he taunted from all three mouths.

Yue Lin closed her eyes. Felt the air. The subtle pull of true qi versus reflected echoes.

There. Left one.

She lunged, dagger piercing through illusion, grazing flesh. Blood sprayed, his shoulder.

He hissed, illusions shattering.

"Good," he said, voice pained but steady. "But not good enough."

He summoned a full mirror veil, room turning into endless reflections, her image duplicated a hundred times, each moving slightly out of sync.

Yue Lin spun, disoriented. Her own storm qi reflected back, lightning whipping at her from every angle.

She took a hit, electric burn across her thigh. Pain bloomed hot. Another, shoulder singed.

She dropped low, centered herself. Storm-lotus roots burrowed into the floor, anchoring her.

Then she unleashed, full cyclone. Black petals whirled, lightning chaining between them, shattering mirrors one by one.

The enforcer staggered as his veil cracked.

She closed in, dagger thrusting for his heart.

He blocked, barely, mirrored blade meeting hers. Sparks flew.

They grappled, close, brutal. His free hand grabbed her throat, water qi flooding her meridians, trying to reflect her own storm back inward.

Pain exploded, her qi turning on itself, meridians burning.

She headbutted him, hard. Her Nose cracked, as blood sprayed.

His grip loosened.

She twisted free, dagger slashing across his chest, deep cut, silver lotus tattoos severed.

He roared, illusion whip reforming, lashing out.

It caught her side, razor edge slicing through robe and flesh. Blood welled hot and fast.

She ignored it. Storm qi surged, roots wrapping his legs, yanking him off balance.

He fell.

She was on him in a blink, dagger to his throat.

"Who else knows?" she rasped, breathing ragged, blood dripping from her side.

He laughed, gurgling, bloody.

"The whole sect," he spat. "You can't hide forever, thief. The mirrors see everything."

Yue Lin's eyes narrowed.

"The plot," she said. "What was the endgame?"

"Draw you out," he gasped. "Kill the blade. Cripple the clan. Retrieve the codex."

Yue Lin pressed harder. Blood welled.

"You failed."

He smiled, thin, dying.

"Did I?"

His hand moved, fast, talisman crushed in his palm. Reflected qi pulse exploded outward, a signal flare, bright blue light piercing the night sky.

Yue Lin's heart sank.

She slit his throat, quick, clean. As blood pooled.

She stood, wobbly, storm qi numbing her wounds as best it could. Side burning, thigh throbbing, meridians aching from the reflected backlash.

She staggered to the window. Fog outside, but that flare would have been seen for miles.

It was time to go.

She slipped out the back, into the alley, storm qi muffling her retreat.

But as she leaped to the first rooftop, she felt eyes on her.

Detection.

She pushed harder, running through pain, fog swallowing her path.

She made it back toward the pavilion, barely, collapsing through the side gate.

Duan Yue was there, waiting, as if she knew.

"Yue Lin—"

"Signal flare," Yue Lin gasped, clutching her side. "They saw me. It's out now."

Duan Yue helped her inside, face grim.

"Then we call them," she said. "We have no choice."

Yue Lin leaned against the wall, blood staining the stone.

"Not yet," she whispered. "One more day. Let them have one more day."

Duan Yue's eyes softened.

"You're a fool," she said. "But a loyal one."

She helped Yue Lin to the infirmary.

The storm had broken.

And the peace was over.

But for one more day, perhaps, it could hold.

Just one more.
