Chapter 1 - Straight Mind

In a desolate jungle surrounded by towering mountains, the faint rays of the rising sun began to appear from behind the peaks. A black panther, baring its large sharp teeth, was chasing a deer at full speed. Behind the panther ran a man in a simple gray tracksuit, also pursuing the hunt.

He appeared to be about 25 years old, but in reality, he was nearly 400 years old. This was because he was the last surviving vampire of his kind, living in this world for four centuries. His name was Head Grill. He had long brown hair and two sharp, piercing blue eyes fixed firmly on his prey.

He had no intention of eating that big cate's flesh — he survived only on blood. That day, his true target was the black panther, which, despite its speed, was far slower than him. As the panther chased the deer, Head ran alongside it at the same pace.

The moment the panther leapt to kill the deer, Head also jumped. He sank his two razor-sharp fangs into the panther's thick neck and drained all its blood. Instantly, a powerful surge of energy spread through his body — stronger than anything he had felt in a long time. He took a long, deep breath, absorbing the moment.

Suddenly, bright sunlight struck his body, causing a painful burning sensation. This happened because he was not wearing his protective talisman. The talisman was crafted from the root of a rare and mysterious tree that no modern book mentioned whose knowledge was last in lost in human history.

He sprinted toward his home at the mountain's peak — a humble shelter built from dry wood which he got from the mountain and grass. Inside, he stored several weapons. As soon as he entered, he picked up his shiny wooden locket attached to a silver chain lying on his study table behind some old books. After wearing it, he could walk in sunlight without being harmed.

Then he picked up his practice sword which was made of wood standing next to study table and practiced for a while. Then he changed his clothes to formal blue shirt and gray pent drove toward the city in his sleek black Jaguar, located about 15–20 kilometers away. The city, named Tennessee, was filled with tall buildings. Within in the city stood a famous café called Yart, owned by his longtime friend In.

Head parked his car outside the café. As soon as he stepped out, a schoolboy shouted,

"Hey mister, awesome car!"

Head turned, smiled, and replied, "One day, you'll have one like this too."

The boy grinned and said, "Sure — but mine will be bigger!" Then he walked toward his nearby school. Head watched him until he disappeared from sight.

He closed his car door and entered the café. To his left, a young couple sat kissing passionately, as though reunited after centuries. He shook his head lightly and muttered, "They will never change."

To his right, a middle-aged couple argued. The wife snapped,

"You didn't give me a Christmas gift last year, and now you say we won't celebrate this year either!"

The husband nervously replied, "Just for this year — until I find a job."

Furious, the wife shouted, "You say that every year!" She pushed her chair back and stormed out of the café.

At the counter sat In, around 50 years old, with white hair, a light beard, and large round spectacles. They had been friends since college. Head waved his hand and greeted him "How's life going "

In sighed, "Same as always — bored behind this counter."

Head joked, "Just count the money. I'll handle the rest."

In slowly stood up with his wooden stick and whispered playfully, "Head, you never age — but we humans do."

Head teased, "Why don't I turn you into a vampire like me?"

In laughed, "Yes! Then I could run fast, hunt big animals, and maybe even beat your mountain-climbing record!"

Head smiled, "If that were possible, I would've turned you long ago."

At that moment, Leo emerged from the kitchen. "Sir, the washroom tap is leaking," he said.

Head told In, "We'll continue later," and went to the washroom where water had flooded the floor . He asked Leo to bring the toolbox.

Leo went to the storeroom on the left side behind the kitchen. Inside were many old things—a broken grass-cutting machine, dusty shelves, broken chairs, scattered utensils, and old cardboard boxes. He wiped the toolbox hanging on the wall with his hand, took it down, and cleaned it with a red cloth. Then he brought it to the washroom.

"Here you go, sir."

"Put it down and get back to work—people are waiting outside," head said. Head repaired the tap in no time and came out wiping his hands.

When head returned to the kitchen, it was in chaos — dishes were piled everywhere. Leo had gone outside to take orders. Through the glass door, Head saw him writing in his notebook.

In just 10 seconds, Head cleaned the entire kitchen and washed every dish — his speed was nearly 100 times that of a normal human.

When Leo came back, he was stunned to see the spotless kitchen. Head warned him, "Next time, this is your job — not mine."

Head then went outside to serve customers. Suddenly, loud police sirens echoed through the street. Everyone froze in fear. He placed his coffee down on a table which he just got from the kitchen after cleaning everything .

Two police cars stopped in front of the café. Even In looked tense and grabbed his stick, but Head waved his hand in air and told him to stay seated. He stepped outside to confront the officers.

One officer spoke into his walkie-talkie:

"Hey Mike, I'm near the school café — still nothing."

He put it away, and both officers approached Head.

Head asked calmly, "Yes, sir — how can I help?"

One officer extended his hand. "I'm Rick, and this is my partner Cane."

Head shook their hands and replied confidently,

"My name is Head Grill."
