Chapter 37 - Chapter 37: Engagement (7)

The final farewell was silent. I gave her one last look, a promise of many more mornings to come, and then slipped out of her room as quietly as I had arrived. I moved through the now-awakening estate like a shadow, my heart light and my senses sharp. I reached my courtyard just as the first servants arrived with my morning water and tea. I was back in my room, in my bed, a full two minutes before they knocked. The perfect crime.

I lay there for a moment, her scent still on my skin, the warmth of her touch still a phantom on my body. My mind replayed the events of the night. The vulnerability, the passion, the wildness. It was a completely new experience. I had spent my first life as an observer, and my second life as a planner. Last night, for the first time, I had truly lived. And I liked it. Even if it was a risk, even if it was a dangerous emotional complication, I knew I would do it again in a heartbeat.

An hour later, I was once again Arya Chen, the composed and brilliant heir of the Chen Family. I had bathed, dressed in my formal day robes, and emerged from my courtyard to greet the new day and our departing guests.

The main hall was already bustling with polite energy as everyone said their farewells. I saw Meira standing with her father, her expression a picture of noble grace. No one could have guessed the secret our night held. Our eyes met across the room. An almost imperceptible smile exchanged between us.

The time finally came for the Su Family to leave. The carriages were brought to the front gate. My father and I stood there to see them off, a final public display of our unbreakable bond.

As Meira prepared to step into her carriage, she paused and turned to me. "I will see you soon, Arya," she said, her voice formal for the benefit of our watching families.

"I will be counting the days," I replied, my voice also formal, but my eyes conveyed a much more personal message.

She was about to turn away, to give a final bow and retreat into the privacy of her carriage, when a mischievous and loud voice cut through the polite morning air.

"Oh, just look at the two of them!"

It was my Third Aunt, Chen Lihua, a woman whose skill was at the Golden Core realm but whose ability to stir up gossip was rumored to be at the Nascent Soul level. She stood with a group of other family matriarchs, a knowing grin on her face, her eyes sparkling with joy.

"Like a pair of lovesick turtle-doves, unable to bear the thought of parting!" she declared to anyone who would listen, her voice carrying across the courtyard. "So young! So sweet! It reminds me of when your uncle and I were betrothed. He wouldn't leave my family's gate for a full day!"

A wave of good-natured laughter spread among the gathered family members. The slightly stiff atmosphere of the official farewell quickly replaced by the comfortable chaos of a family enjoying a private joke. Elders who had been stern moments before were now chuckling behind their sleeves. My younger cousins were now openly grinning and nudging each other.

I saw a beautiful blush rise on Meira's cheeks, starting from her neck and spreading all the way to the tips of her ears. Her carefully composed mask as the Su Family heir was replaced by the flustered expression of a young woman being teased about her first love. She shot a panicked glance at her father, who was not frowning at the breach of decorum. Patriarch Su was actually trying to hide a smile behind his hand, his shoulders shaking with silent laughter. Even my own father let out a booming chuckle.

I felt my own ears grow warm, a sensation I didn't remember ever feeling before. In my past life, I was too isolated. In this life, as the villain, I was too feared or respected for such casual teasing. We were being teased, like any normal young couple. The feeling was so surprisingly normal that a genuine grin spread across my face, and I didn't try to hide it.

This was what it felt like to be part of a family. Not just a clan or a political entity, but a real family, with its embarrassing aunts and its warm moments.

Meira, however, looked as if she wanted the earth to open up and swallow her whole. She shot me one last flustered look, a silent plea for rescue mixed with shared amusement, before deciding that a strategic retreat was the only honorable option. She gave a clumsy bow to my father and practically dove into her carriage, pulling the silk curtain shut as if to hide from the cheerful laughter.

I watched her go, my grin widening. The sight of the powerful Meira Su, the woman who had stood with me against the weight of our families, being so completely undone by some light teasing was utterly endearing.

The teasing now turned to me. "Don't just stand there, Arya!" my Third Aunt called out. "Go on, run after the carriage! We won't tell your father!"

More laughter erupted. I simply shook my head, my smile never leaving my face, and gave a respectful bow to Patriarch Su, who was now wiping a tear of mirth from his eye. "Have a safe journey, Patriarch," I said.

"We will, my boy," he said, clapping me on the shoulder with a newfound warmth. "Take care of yourself. And try not to pine too much."

I stood at the gate, a silent presence amidst the cheerful farewells of my family, watching as the grand procession of Su Family carriages began to move. I focused on the specific carriage I knew was hers, its azure banners fluttering in the morning breeze. I kept my gaze on it as it rolled through the massive gates of the estate and into the bustling world beyond.

I stood there for a long time, even after the laughter and chatter of my family had quieted and they began to disperse back into the estate. I remained until the procession was just a line of small specks in the distance, a faint trail of dust on the horizon their only sign.

The estate was quiet now. The last of the guests were gone. The grand celebration was over. The silence that descended was a stark contrast to the joyous chaos of the past few days. A deep sense of emptiness settled over the courtyard. The place already felt a little less bright, a little less warm, without her in it.

The grin on my face had replaced by a more thoughtful expression. The wonderful interlude of normalcy was over. The warmth of the morning, the feel of her hand in mine, the taste of her kiss. They were now memories, fuel for the hard road ahead.

The world I had to conquer was still out there. The enemies I had to defeat were still plotting. The destiny I had to change remained a monstrous threat.

I turned away from the gate, the image of her flustered face burned into my mind. The path of the shepherd was a lonely one. But, I knew what I was fighting for. It was for a future filled with more mornings like this one. It was for her.
