The Shadow of the Alabaster
The sun began its final descent, casting long, jagged shadows across the obsidian arena as the announcer's voice boomed over the restless crowd. "Ladies and gentlemen, we have reached the final bout of Phase One! From the fierce warrior clans of the Red Tribe, we have the flame-bringer: Octavius Red! And his opponent, a young man who has survived the terrors of the East Blue Laboratory—representing the Larissian Academy: Kayn Alabaster!"
Octavius Red stepped onto the stage, a towering figure with hair like a dying star and eyes that simmered with arrogance. He gripped a heavy, iron-shod fire staff that crackled with orange sparks. Opposite him stood Kayn. His pale skin looked almost ghostly under the artificial lights, and the jagged scar over his eye crinkled as he narrowed his gaze. He wore his dark Academy uniform, his lean frame tensed as he prepared for the onslaught.
Without waiting for the signal to echo, Octavius pivoted. With a roar, he launched his staff directly at Kayn's chest. The weapon whistled through the air, trailing a mane of furious fire. Kayn threw himself to the side, the heat of the passing flame singeing the fabric of his sleeve.
Octavius didn't miss a beat. With astonishing agility, he leapt into the air. Instead of landing on the stone, he touched down onto the levitating staff, which remained suspended in mid-air by his surging aura. Using the weapon as a platform, he dove downward, kicking the staff into a vertical descent. Kayn scrambled back, but the staff slammed into the obsidian between his feet. The impact was tectonic. A deep crater spider-webbed across the stage, and the resulting shockwave knocked Kayn off his feet. He hit the ground hard, his breath stolen. For a terrifying moment, Kayn froze. The trauma of the Serpent Chimera and the recent horrors of the East Blue incident flashed before his eyes—a cold, paralyzing fear that gripped his heart.
Octavius, now standing firmly on the ground, smirked. He lunged forward and smacked Kayn across the jaw with the flat of his staff. The force sent Kayn spinning across the stage, sliding through the dust until he came to rest at the very edge of the ring.
Octavius walked up to him, his boots clicking rhythmically on the stone, his voice dripping with tribal disdain. "Pity. You're weak. That must mean your heritage is brittle, a bloodline of cowards. It is not your fault, boy. The strong survive to write history, while the weak die to provide the ink."
Kayn slowly pushed himself up, trembling. He spat a mouthful of blood onto the obsidian, his fingers digging into the stone. "Weak, huh?" he rasped, his voice gaining a sudden, dangerous edge. "Maybe you're right. Maybe I am weak. But I've learned that being weak isn't an excuse to quit. George wouldn't give up. Not even when the world was burning."
At the mention of his friend, a flicker of dark, violet energy ignited around Kayn's fingertips. The air around him grew heavy and cold. Suddenly, he threw his hands forward, firing a rapid combination of Dark Bolt projectiles—shimmering spheres of concentrated shadow that tore through the air like obsidian bullets.
Octavius swung his staff to parry, but the shadow-bolts were merely a screen. Using the dark projectiles as cover, Kayn rushed forward with a burst of speed he didn't know he possessed. He bypassed Octavius's guard, slipping under the reach of the fire staff.
Kayn landed a powerful, aura-enhanced blow to Octavius's solar plexus, the impact folding the Red Tribe warrior in half. As Octavius hit the ground, gasping for air, Kayn stood over him. His hands were wreathed in crackling dark power, held mere inches from Octavius's face, ready to unleash a point-blank barrage.
Octavius looked up into Kayn's focused eyes—no longer filled with fear, but with a cold, unwavering resolve. Knowing he was thoroughly beaten and outmaneuvered, Octavius looked away in disgust and spat, "I yield."
The announcer reached a fever pitch. "And that's the match, folks! Against all odds, the Alabaster shadow emerges victorious! Phase One of the Harvest Ritual is officially complete!"
