Chapter 43 - CHAPTER 43 — THE PRICE OF MERCY

Mercy is misunderstood.

People think it's kindness.

It isn't.

It's delay.

Iron Lake City survived because I intervened.

Heaven noticed.

And decided to make an example.

The first casualty wasn't a disciple.

It was a messenger.

A boy from the outer districts.

No cultivation.

No protection.

He collapsed at the Pavilion gate, veins dark, breath shallow.

Poisoned.

Not crude.

Targeted.

Xueyi knelt instantly.

"This is Heavenly-tainted."

I scanned him.

Recognized the structure.

A lesson.

"They want to show me limits," I said.

I placed my hand over the boy's chest.

Didn't purge.

Rewrote.

The poison hesitated.

Confused.

Then unraveled.

The boy gasped.

Lived.

The sky darkened.

Heaven responded immediately.

WARNING: Unauthorized Intervention

Penalty: Equivalent Exchange

Pressure slammed down.

Not on me.

On the city.

Buildings cracked.

Old wounds reopened.

Qi backlash rippled.

Chen Yu clenched his fists.

"They're hurting everyone!"

"Yes," I said quietly.

"Because I chose mercy."

I stepped onto the highest wall.

Spoke upward.

"If you punish mercy," I said,

"you admit fear."

The pressure intensified.

Then—

Stopped.

Heaven withdrew the penalty.

Not because it agreed.

Because it hesitated.

That hesitation mattered.
