: The Price of a Promise
Stella stared at him, the pieces of the puzzle finally falling perfectly into place. A brilliant smile broke across her face as the full weight of reality washed over her.
"You left," she breathed, her voice filled with a mixture of awe and immense relief. "You actually left the HSS."
Hadrian looked down at her, his dark eyes softening with a profound, unspoken gratitude. "I did. The day after you walked away, my resignation was approved. No penalties, no tracking devices, no shadows looming over my shoulder. They granted me full civilian discharge, with my record completely expunged." He paused, stepping closer to her. "But I think you already knew that would happen."
Stella let out a soft laugh, leaning back against the terrace railing. "I might have had something to do with it."
Three years ago, before she turned her back on the agency forever, Stella had completed a legendary, high-stakes mission that saved the nation from an unprecedented crisis. In gratitude, the President himself had personally visited her, offering her a blank check—anything she wanted, any amount of money, any level of political protection.
Stella hadn't used that life-changing favor for herself. She didn't need the President's money; she already had Aunt Melissa's vast legacy waiting for her. Instead, she had used her one presidential wish to secure the freedom of her best friend.
As his closest confidante, Stella knew everything about Hadrian. She knew that behind his deadly exterior was a man carrying the heavy burden of being his family's sole breadwinner. His father was a retired veteran struggling with his health, and his mother only ran a modest, small-scale local business. Hadrian hadn't stayed in the brutal world of the HSS because he loved the bloodshed—he stayed because the black-budget hazard pay kept his family afloat.
"I remember sitting in that oval office," Stella said softly, looking up into his eyes. "The President asked me what I wanted. I told him I wanted an elite operative given a full, unconditional honorable discharge, along with a massive, state-sponsored lifelong pension for his parents. I told him you deserved a chance to choose your own path, to live a better life out in the open."
Hadrian took her hands in his, his grip warm and steady. The fierce, untouchable author "H" looked completely undone by the sheer depth of her loyalty.
"When the Director handed me my freedom and told me my family's financial future was permanently secured by executive order, they wouldn't tell me who pulled the strings," Hadrian murmured, his voice thick with emotion. "But in my heart, I knew. Only one person in the world loved me enough to give up a presidential favor for my sake."
"You saved my life in Berlin, Hadrian," Stella reminded him gently, her eyes shining. "You kept my secret and protected me from the HSS when they could have destroyed me. Giving you your freedom wasn't a sacrifice. It was the easiest choice I've ever made."
"Thank you, Stella," he whispered, squeezing her hands. "Because of that wish, I finally had the time to sit down and write. I had the peace of mind to take care of my parents, and the freedom to become the man I always wanted to be. I owe this entire new life to you."
Standing together under the starlit sky, the noise of the global elite fading into the background, the bond between them felt unshakeable. They were no longer ghosts trading secrets in the dark; they were two survivors who had conquered the shadows, finally standing together in the light.
"Stella, "
" Hmmm "
"Can I ask you something?"
"Go on" she listened curiously.
"Did you ever wish we would meet again?"
"Honestly...I did. I wanted to see my best friend again even if it would be just once."
Hadrian smiled in satisfaction.
"What about you, Hadrian?"
"Well... I would say I everyday. "
"Everyday?"
"I wished each day that passed would find a way to make us see each other again. That was why I decided to attend this event. To see your face again. I guess I made the right choice. "
It was Stella's turn to smile now. He squeezed her hand gently. "Let's be the best kind of friends ever known. Let's be happy together. "
They faced the moonlight ,joy dancing in their hearts as their hands bonded together.
