The Vanguard Ceremony
The inaugural Global Philanthropy and Legacy Awards was not an event handled by The Vance Global Foundation alone. Recognizing the massive scale of the initiative, three of the country's other highest-ranking international organizations had joined hands with Stella's foundation to co-host the evening. Together, they had transformed the grand ballroom into a sanctuary of elite diplomacy and unmatched prestige.
The atmosphere was electric, practically vibrating with the chatter of high society and the aggressive click-flash of hundreds of reporters. Media networks from across the globe had their cameras trained on the red carpet, desperate to capture every angle of the billionaires, diplomats, and cultural icons entering the venue.
Stella stood near the edge of the stage, maintaining her composure despite the relentless barrage of flashing cameras tapping into every corner of the room. She wore a stunning, structured emerald-green evening gown that exuded absolute authority. As the lead chairperson representing the unified committees, the duty of presenting the night's most anticipated honor fell squarely on her shoulders.
The ceremony proceeded flawlessly, with awards handed out to exceptional humanitarians and global pioneers. Finally, the room dimmed, and the massive screens behind the stage illuminated with the single, enigmatic letter: H.
Stella stepped up to the podium. The applause died down to a respectful hush, save for the quiet whirring of the press cameras at the front.
"Tonight, our joint committees recognize an individual who chose to use his immense literary influence not for personal fame, but to shine a light on the beauty of human loyalty," Stella spoke, her voice clear and commanding. "Though he famously shuns the spotlight and refuses all public appearances, his staggering generosity to our foundations and his masterpiece, This Ship called Friendship, have left an indelible mark on the world. This award goes to the author of the decade: Mister H."
The ballroom erupted into a thunderous ovation. Stella turned toward the pristine crystal trophy resting on the pedestal, fully expecting to accept it on his behalf or hand it to a literary representative, given his notoriously reclusive nature.
"I will accept the award."
The deep, rich, impeccably calm voice carried perfectly over the microphone, cutting cleanly through the applause.
The crowd near the main entrance parted. Walking down the center aisle with a striking, dangerous elegance that instantly froze the air in the room was a man dressed in a flawless, custom-tailored black tuxedo.
Stella's breath caught completely in her throat. She froze, her hands gripping the edges of the podium so tightly her knuckles turned white. Her mind raced, violently colliding with a past she thought she had buried.
Three years had made him sharper, more imposing, and completely commanding.
Hadrian.
He wasn't an agent representing the author. He wasn't a publisher stepping in to take a trophy. The absolute certainty in his stride, the quiet power radiating from him, and the way the entire room organically yielded to his presence made the reality hit her like a physical blow.
The mysterious, unmarried, brilliant author H. was Hadrian himself.
As he stepped up the stairs of the stage and walked directly toward the podium, Stella completely lost her corporate mask. The deadly, unflappable CEO of the Vance Global Foundation vanished, replaced for a split second by the operative who had hidden in his shadow.
"Hadrian..." she whispered, the name slipping past her lips before she could stop it, entirely breathless.
Hadrian stopped right in front of her. His dark eyes locked onto hers, holding her gaze with an intensity that made the rest of the crowded, flashing ballroom completely fade into white noise. A faint, almost imperceptible smirk touched the corner of his lips.
"Nice meeting you again, Stella," he murmured, his voice low enough that only she could hear it beneath the ambient noise of the crowd.
The sudden outburst of a fresh wave of cheers and the rhythmic, rapid snapping of the reporters' camera shutters snapped Stella violently back to reality. The blinding flashes reminded her exactly where she was—on a global stage, surrounded by thousands of eyes.
Forcing her training to take over, Stella swallowed the lump in her throat, wore a flawless professional smile, and picked up the heavy crystal award. Her hand trembled slightly as she extended it to him.
Hadrian reached out, his fingers brushing against hers as he took the trophy, sending a jolt of familiarity straight through her. They turned together to face the sea of media, the blinding lights of the cameras washing over them as they posed for the official pictures—the powerful CEO and the enigmatic author, bound by a secret the world was never meant to know.
