Chapter 44 - Chapter 44

The illness eventually grew too aggressive for the coastal house to manage. Following a severe breathing crisis, Melissa had to be admitted to a private hospital nearby. But the change in scenery didn't stop them.

Even in the sterile, white hospital room, surrounded by monitors and IV drips, the journal remained open on Stella's lap. They continued to write, detailing the final pieces of the Vance family legacy.

One particular Friday night, the air was unusually mild. The hospital boasted a massive, beautifully landscaped courtyard with a sprawling, ancient oak tree surrounded by comfortable benches where patients could relax. Wanting to give her aunt a moment of peace, Stella carefully wheeled Melissa out into the evening air.

They sat together under the canopy of the tree as the twilight settled in. For a long time, they just spoke—not of betrayals or fortunes, but of life, memories, and regrets.

Suddenly, Melissa reached out and grabbed Stella's hand. Her grip was surprisingly fierce, carrying the immense warmth of someone who loved her more than life itself. Remember, to the rest of the world, Stella was a man—a hardened, stoic HSS agent. But to Melissa, she was just her beloved darling.

Melissa looked at Stella with eyes full of tears. "I love you so much, sweetheart. More than I love myself. You mean everything to me... and you have well done. Even if you have to sacrifice, even if you gave your life for once to protect what matters."

Stella felt an intense wave of emotion crash through her defense mechanisms. Tears pricked her eyes. Hearing her aunt talk about sacrifice worried her deeply.

"Don't talk like that, Aunt Melissa," Stella whispered, her voice cracking. "I love you too. So much. That love is the only reason I did my best to survive the HSS, even when my life was constantly at risk. I did it for you."

Melissa smiled through her tears, drawing a fragile breath, and pulled Stella into a tight, desperate embrace. They wept together for a few beautiful, heartbreaking seconds, holding onto each other under the shadow of the great tree.

But midway through the hug, Melissa's body went completely heavy.

Stella pulled back to look at her, her heart stopping. "Aunt Melissa?"

There was no answer. The light had completely left Melissa's eyes. She had collapsed. Stella held her close, the reality shattering her world as she began to sob uncontrollably against her aunt's shoulder. Melissa was gone.
