The Sanctuary of Secrets
The moment Stella neared the familiar property, the heavy, exhausting armor of her male HSS disguise finally came off. Here, in total isolation, she could finally step out of the character she played every day. She had deeply missed this place—the spotless, polished floors that gleamed in the sunlight, the profound calm of the spacious rooms, the endless shelves of books, and the crisp, early morning sea breeze carrying the sharp scent of the salt water. For the first time in months, she had the opportunity to just be a girl again.
However, the peace was fractured the moment she stepped inside. Aunt Melissa welcomed her with a tight, loving embrace, but Stella's trained eyes immediately noticed a troubling change. The vibrant, sharp woman who had raised her looked completely drained, as if her very life energy had been siphoned away.
Worse still, on her way down the driveway, Stella had noticed a group of unfamiliar, hostile people lingering near the edge of the property. They had been trying to instigate a fight, acting as though they were looking for an opportunity to bundle Aunt Melissa into a vehicle and take her away. Stella's instincts had flared, and she had nearly stepped in to neutralize them before the group retreated into the shadows.
Curiosity and protective panic swirled within Stella. When she gently pushed for details, Aunt Melissa quietly but firmly shut the conversation down, putting up a defensive wall. Stella could feel the heavy weight of the secrets her aunt was keeping. But Stella wasn't the type to force answers; she respected privacy deeply and knew that if Aunt Melissa wanted to keep it private, she had to respect that boundary.
Deciding to bring comfort the best way she knew how, Stella retreated to the large, familiar kitchen. Slipping into a comfortable, oversized sweater, she embraced the quiet luxury of her true self and began preparing a fresh, comforting potato salad—a quiet, grounding ritual to clear her mind while she waited for the truth to finally unfold.
