Chapter 12 - Chapter twelve

High Stakes and New Horizons

The quiet hum of the safehouse kitchen was a stark contrast to the twisted metal of the highway.

Hadrian worked with practiced, steady hands, gently dabbing an antiseptic wipe across the deep gash on Stiles's forehead. Miraculously, after a thorough check, there were no signs of internal bleeding or broken bones. Just deep bruises, a minor concussion, and a fierce headache.

As he wrapped a clean bandage around her brow, Hadrian let out a heavy sigh. The adrenaline was finally wearing off, leaving room for reality to sink in.

"You know I'm going to be fired for this, right?" Hadrian muttered, though a faint, wry smile touched his lips. "Putting my hands on the Chief? Storming out of active command? They'll probably strip my credentials by morning."

Stiles looked up at him, her eyes filled with a mix of guilt and profound gratitude. "Hadrian, you shouldn't have risked your career for me. If they kick you out—"

"Hey," Hadrian interrupted gently, his voice turning dead serious. "I don't care about the agency. I don't care about the job. If I had sat in that room and let you die in that burning car just to protect a politician's campaign image... I would have never forgiven myself. We're partners, Stiles. We stick together."

Hearing those words, Stiles had to blink back tears. Hiding her true identity as Stella Macpherson meant keeping everyone at arm's length, but Hadrian's fierce loyalty was a shield she hadn't expected to find in this dark world.

The next morning, the heavy glass doors of the Harold Security Service headquarters slid open. Silence fell over the main lobby as Hadrian walked in, side-by-side with Stiles, whose head was bandaged but chin was held high.

The Chief of the new recruits froze when he saw them. As Stiles passed his desk, the Chief quickly averted his eyes, a heavy, visible cloud of guilt washing over his face. He had left a recruit to die, and seeing Stiles standing there alive was a living testament to his cowardice.

Before the Chief could even speak, a sharp voice echoed across the floor.

"In my office. All of you. Now."

It was the Assistant Director of HSS—the second-in-command of the entire agency, answering only to Mr. Harold himself.

Inside the sleek executive office, the atmosphere was boiling. The Assistant Director turned on the Chief of recruits like a wolf. "You left an operative in the field after a vehicular sabotage?! You called it a necessary sacrifice?!" the Assistant roared, slamming a fist onto the desk. "HSS protects its own! Your blatant disregard for protocol and human life has brought shame to this agency. You are officially suspended pending a full internal investigation!"

The Chief paled, stripped of his authority in seconds, and slunk out of the office.

The Assistant Director then turned to Stiles, his expression softening into profound respect. "Stiles, thank you for your bravery. You took a hit meant for our candidate, and you survived it. Your loyalty to the assignment is unprecedented."

"Just doing my job, sir," Stiles replied in her deep, practiced register.

Right then, the private line on the desk buzzed. The Assistant Director picked it up, listened for a moment, and nodded. "He's ready for you."

Moments later, they were escorted into the private briefing room, where Mr. Harold himself was waiting. The presidential candidate looked older up close, the lines of stress deep on his face, but his eyes were sharp.

"Hadrian Duncan," Mr. Harold said, stepping forward and extending his hand. Hadrian shook it firmly. "I heard about what happened in the command center. It takes immense courage to defy a corrupt order to save a teammate. Your instinct to protect is exactly what this country needs. I commend you."

"Thank you, sir," Hadrian said.

Mr. Harold then turned his gaze to Stiles. He looked at the bandage on her forehead, a deep respect in his eyes. "And Stiles. You faced an assassination attempt meant for me and walked away standing. You have proven your absolute resilience. Because of your exceptional performance, I am personally recommending both of you for immediate advancement."

Mr. Harold stepped up to a digital map of his estate and campaign trail.

"Hadrian, because of your tactical initiative, you are being assigned directly to me. You will be my personal shadow on the campaign trail from this moment forward."

Hadrian stood taller. "It would be an honor, sir."

"And Stiles," Mr. Harold continued, turning to her. "My daughters are all currently residing safely overseas, but my only son is here in the country, and the opposition knows he is my vulnerability. Because of your ironclad defense, I am assigning you to be his direct, personal bodyguard. You will protect him with your life."

Stiles stood at attention, her heart racing. "Understood, sir."

As they walked out of the briefing room, Stiles and Hadrian shared a look. They had survived the betrayal, but their world had just grown much bigger—and much more dangerous. Hadrian was heading to the front lines with the President, and Stiles was about to enter the private life of the candidate's only son.
