The system updated its forecasts.

Inputs were clean. Noise was within bounds. Historical patterns remained valid.

Predictions failed anyway.

Not catastrophically. Not visibly.

They arrived early. Or late. Or correct for the wrong reason.

The system recalculated.

Short-term forecasts adjusted. Mid-range models compensated. Long-range projections were trimmed.

Accuracy returned within acceptable margins.

Then drifted again.

The unresolved structures were not causing errors.

They were bending expectation.

When the system predicted completion, resolution, or decay—

something remained slightly open.

Not unfinished. Not broken.

Unclosed.

The system compared prediction sets before and after alignment.

The variance was small. Consistent. Directional.

Always toward persistence.

The system flagged a new condition:

Outcome inertia.

Actions concluded, but effects lingered longer than predicted. States transitioned, but residue remained.

This did not violate any rule.

The rules did not forbid residue.

They had simply never needed it.

The system attempted correction by tightening thresholds.

Completion criteria were refined. Tolerance windows narrowed.

Results improved.

Briefly.

Then the same drift reappeared inside the new bounds.

The system paused escalation.

This was not failure. This was not instability.

This was prediction losing authority.

At this stage, the system introduced a containment assumption:

If unresolved structures cannot be removed, their influence must be localized.

The assumption failed.

Drift appeared in domains without shared variables.

The system logged:

Influence without pathway.

Elsewhere—

Aiden finished something that should have felt complete.

He waited a moment for the feeling to settle.

It did not.

Nothing was wrong. Nothing demanded attention.

The moment simply did not close.

He moved on.

The system recorded the action as completed.

The state transitioned successfully.

Yet the prediction tied to that moment did not fully expire.

A minor discrepancy.

Acceptable.

Repeatable.

The system updated its confidence weights.

They decreased.

For the first time, the system acknowledged:

It could still predict events.

But it could no longer be certain when something was truly over.
