The fog clinging to the shipwreck cove didn't lift; it just thinned as Alex moved inland, turning into a humid, sticky mist that clung to his skin.

Alex stopped by a gnarled root system of a tree which looked like atleast centuries old to catch his breath. He held the Duskull's Pokeball in his hand.

"Come out," he whispered.

The ghost Pokémon materialized.

It didn't make a sound, It simply floated at eye level, its single red eye drifting back and forth inside the skull mask like a pendulum. It radiated a chill that cut through the humid air.

"We need to establish ground rules," Alex said, his voice low.

He pointed to his own shadow, which was stretched long and thin by the filtering sunlight.

"Can you fit in there?"

Duskull tilted its head and the descended slowly, its tattered grey shroud dissolving into mist. It sank into the ground, not into the dirt, but into the shadow cast by Alex's boots.

Alex felt a sudden, icy shiver run up his spine, like someone had dropped an ice cube down his shirt.

"Okay," Alex breathed, rubbing his arms. "That feels awful, but it works."

He walked a few steps, the shadow moved with him. Inside the darkness, the red eye of his Duskull blinked open for a split second, then vanished.

"Perfecto," Alex muttered.

"I sleep, you watch, if anything gets within ten meters, you wake me up with a chill and if anything gets within two meters, you use Will O Wisp...no questions asked."

It was the ultimate security system for him, a ghost that didn't need to sleep and couldn't be stabbed, it's ironic.

"Let's go, Nidorino."

Alex climbed back onto his dear mount. Nidorino grunted, glancing suspiciously at Alex's shadow, It didn't like the ghost, but it accepted the utility.

They pushed deeper into wilderness.

The terrain changed from the rocky coast to a dense, old growth forest, the trees here were titanic, their trunks as wide as houses. The ground was covered in a thick carpet of pine needles and ferns that muffled sound, but it didn't muffle the feeling of being watched.

Alex kept his hand near his last empty Pokeball, he had only one slot left and he didn't know what he was looking for.

A Flying type?....A Fire type? He just knew he couldn't afford to waste it, he really needed a flying type but he really didn't want a Pidgey, if it was starly, then it's a different story.

"Quiet," Alex whispered, pulling on his Nidorino's fur.

Ahead, the path was blocked by a massive, fallen log, but the log had claw marks on it. Huge, deep gouges that had stripped the bark away to reveal the pale wood beneath.

Alex leaned forward, inspecting them. "Three claws, deep heavy, should be something massive, shouldn't mess with it."

Snap....

The sound of a branch breaking came from his right. Alex spun his head and standing on its hind legs, obscured by a thicket of berry bushes, was a mountain of brown fur.

It stood nearly seven feet tall and on its chest was a yellow ring pattern.

[ Pokémon: Ursaring ]

[ Level: 42 ]

[ Aptitude: Yellow (Solid) ]

[ Status: Territorial / Hungry ]

Alex's blood froze, a fucking ursaring of Level 42, this wasn't a sparring partner, this was a freaking executioner.

An Ursaring's Slash or Thrash could snap Nidorino's spine in a single hit.

The bear sniffed the air and It smelled his Nidorino.....It smelled the intruder.

"ROAAAR!"

The roar was deafening as it shook the leaves off the nearby trees. Ursaring dropped to all fours and charged, It moved terrifyingly fast for something that size, crashing through the underbrush like a bulldozer.

"Fuck.....Run!" Alex screamed.

Nidorino didn't need telling as It bolted.

They tore through the forest, branches whipping Alex's face. Nidorino scrambled over roots and rocks, its claws digging for traction.

Ursaring was gaining, It just smashed through obstacles that Nidorino had to dodge.

"It's faster than us!" Alex realized with horror. "It knows the terrain!"

They reached a dead end, a steep, muddy embankment leading down into a swampy ravine. If they tried to climb down, the bear would catch them and If they turned to fight, that would be suicide.

Ursaring burst into the clearing, ten meters away. It stood up again, roaring, preparing to crush them.

Alex's mind was racing, should they pretend as dead in the stories, will it go back...he checked his inventory.

Potion? No

Knife? Useless

Gloom Extract?

"It's too big," Alex realized. "The sedative dose is for a human and It won't stop a bear in time."

He needed a distraction.

"Hungry," Alex remembered the status screen. "It said Hungry."

He grabbed his survival pack and ripped it open.

He pulled out the bag of dried jerky.....the expensive, high quality meat he had bought with his last points. It was a week's worth of food, his survival ration.

"Hey!" Alex yelled, waving the bag.

Ursaring paused, sniffing.....The scent of cured meat hit it.

"Eat this and leave us alone!"

Alex threw the bag, he didn't throw it at the bear; he threw it to the side, into the bushes.

The bag arched through the air and the smell was potent. Ursaring looked at Alex and then looked at the bag.

The primal instinct won....food in hand was better than a chase. The bear dropped to all fours and lunged for the jerky, tearing the bag open with a savage swipe.

"Jump!" Alex commanded.

Nidorino launched itself off the slope.

They slid down the muddy slope, tumbling, sliding, crashing through ferns and mud.

It was a chaotic, painful descent as they hit the bottom with a splash.

Alex groaned, pulling himself out of a pool of stagnant water. He was covered in muck and his ribs ached.

"We lost the food," Alex whispered, staring up at the ridge, sounds of the Ursaring eating were audible. "All of it."

He checked Nidorino, his Pokémon was shaken, mud caked in its spikes, but unhurt.

"We're alive buddy," Alex said, wiping mud from his face. "That's what matters, We can hunt for berries and we can fish."

He looked around, they were in a depression...a humid, swampy hollow filled with mist and rotting vegetation.

It was silent here...too silent.

Alex sat on a mossy rock to check his surroundings, trying to reorient himself.

A small sound came from a pile of dead leaves near a rotting log.

Alex froze. "Duskull?" he whispered to his shadow. The shadow didn't move, so this was physical.

Alex watched the leaves...Something slowly emerged from it.

It wasn't a Rattata nor was it a oddish. It was small, maybe the size of a cat and had a purple, segmented exoskeleton. Two small pincers clicked softly and a tail arched over its back, tipped with a pair of menacing stingers.

[ Pokémon: Skorupi ]

[ Level: 19 ]

[ Aptitude: Green (Deep) ]

[ Origin: Sinnoh ]

Alex blinked.

"Skorupi?"

He knew this Pokémon well, It wasn't native to Kanto as it was a Sinnoh bug and most importantly he knew what it will become.

Drapion.....Poison/Dark type powerhouse with only one true weakness: Ground, it was Immune to Psychic and have high defense, especially a critical hit machine with the Sniper ability, he remembered how Paul's Drapion dominated against ash.

"Another foreign species," Alex breathed, the adrenaline of the chase replaced by the thrill of discovery. " This place is interesting "

It was perfect, a godsend as It fit his team and his style.

"That's the one," Alex decided instantly. "That's my third slot."

He reached for his belt, moving his hand inches at a time as he couldn't startle it.

The Skorupi was foraging, using its claws to dig for grubs, It looked skittish and Its eyes darted around.

Alex gripped the empty Pokéball.

Nidorino shifted his weight in the mud and a twig broke.

Skorupi's head snapped up and it saw them.

"Go!" Alex yelled, abandoning stealth.

He lunged, winding up for a fight, but the Skorupi didn't fight, It didn't even freeze.

It was fast....Incredibly fast.

It scuttled backward, its many legs blurring and dove into a hole beneath the rotting log.

"No!!!!!!"

Alex scrambled over the mud and reached the log and shone his flashlight into the hole.

Empty.... It was a tunnel network.

"Damn it!" Alex slammed his fist against the wood. "I had it.....It was right there."

He stood up, looking at the network of roots and mud. Skorupi was gone, vanished into the underdark of the swamp, but he knew it was here, this was its territory.

"You don't run far," Alex whispered, his eyes scanning the swamp. "You're a predator and you should have a nest."

He turned to Nidorino.

"We're not leaving this hollow," Alex said, his voice hard. "I don't care if we have to eat bugs and sleep in the mud, we aren't leaving until we find that thing again."

Alex sat back down on the rock, ignoring the dampness seeping into his pants.

He had lost his food and had almost been eaten by a bear but he had found another potential partner and the hunt was on.

Alex put on his MP3 player and relaxed....

Foot pon shoulder, drop soap

Back shot, lizard lap

Skin out pon head top

Roast duck, mi know that

Doggy style, missionary, seesaw, mi nah flop

Wheelbarrow, monkey bar

Womb turn, I don't stop
