Grey hesitated even after the gate opened.
The car idled there, the quiet almost oppressive, and for a moment he wondered if turning around would be easier than facing whatever waited beyond it.
His fingers tightened on the steering wheel, his chest rising and falling too fast. Then, as if his body had already decided for him, he drove forward.
Once he stopped the car inside the compound, he didn't move right away. His gaze lifted and locked onto what seemed to be the main door ahead.
His mind was far too distracted to take in the rest of the place, the size of the compound, the way it was laid out, or how isolated it truly was.
All of that blurred into the background. His heart was pounding hard enough that he could feel it in his throat, each beat echoing with anticipation and dread.
He saw Lord Jethro standing there.
He was facing the car, hands tucked into the pockets of his trousers, his stance casual. But Grey could see past it immediately.
