Bella's POV
The doctor emerged from the examination room clutching a manila folder against his chest, his expression grim enough to make my stomach drop. I shot up from my chair so quickly it scraped against the linoleum floor with a harsh sound. Beside me, Fiona adjusted Toby's weight on her lap, her eyes fixed on the approaching figure.
"Your mother's diabetes has become uncontrolled," he announced, pausing to clear his throat in that way medical professionals do when they're about to deliver devastating news. "We've stabilized her condition temporarily, but she requires immediate transfer to a full-service hospital. Our clinic lacks the necessary equipment to manage potential complications."
The words hit me like ice water. "Uncontrolled? That's impossible. She takes her medication religiously. I watch her take it every morning."
