A subgender division happened when the dormant gland at the back of the neck finally activated.
Everyone had one. Or almost everyone. Some were so underdeveloped they barely existed at all. They said it depended on the environment you grew up in. On what your body sensed. On the kind of care you received in the womb.
Usually, it happened at birth or later during adolescence—when your body decided what it needed to become to survive in this world. There were rare cases where it triggered prematurely.
But there had never been a case where the body corrected itself afterward.
A gust of wind cut through my work clothes.

No. It was just a cold.
Or maybe some strange mutation of that virus that had shut the world down a few years ago. I had survived it once. Maybe the aftereffects were only surfacing now, making me imagine scents that didn't even exist.
