After convincing Elara, I finally got out of the car. I gave her a small smile and started walking right away. Normally, I would wait until the car disappeared from sight, but I didn't want Alex to keep waiting.
I glanced back after a few paces and saw the car was still there. I pretended not to notice and picked up my pace until the convenience store came into view.
Alex was sitting at one of the tables outside. There was a bottle of alcohol on the table in front of him.
That was unusual.
He never drank alone. Even if it got late, he always waited for me. So the moment I saw it, I knew something was wrong.
"What? Did you start without me?" I asked, trying to sound normal. "Can't you wait a little? I told you I was on my way." I took a seat in front of him.
"Why are you so late? I was bored of waiting." He straightened up and looked at me carefully. "Aren't you tired of working late almost every day?"
