"Everyone, take heed!" Barrett's voice was sonorous and powerful. "As per the previous grouping, First and Second Pegasus Squads, step forward!"
Twenty knights responded in unison, stepping forward with synchronized strides. They had already swapped their heavy gear for lighter leather armor, designed for better mobility in the air.
Barrett nodded. "We are not starting from zero. The six Pegasi we tamed previously allowed many of you to experience the sensation of flight. Your foundation will be the key to our rapid combat readiness!" He paused, his tone growing more solemn. "But let me warn you! Flying and aerial combat are two entirely different things! The sky is our path, but it can also be our grave! Discipline, coordination, and skill—none can be lacking! From this day forth, you are no longer just knights on horseback; you are hunters of the sky! The training will be bitter, exhausting, and even dangerous. Do you have the confidence?!"
"Yes!" The knights roared, their voices shaking the fields.
"Very well! Now, by squad, choose your partners!" Barrett ordered.
The selection process went much smoother thanks to Moonlight's "preliminary work." Although the new Pegasi were still a bit shy and resistant, they gradually accepted their new masters under the knights' patient coaxing.
Of course, it wasn't all smooth sailing. "Whoa! Easy there! Brother, where are you trying to toss me?" one knight yelled as his mount flapped its wings violently, nearly bucking him off. "Steady! Steady! You're not there to dance on its back!" Barrett bellowed.
The training ground was a chaotic, lively scene. Fortunately, the knights had solid equestrian backgrounds and soon adapted to the rhythm. Under Barrett's commands, the two squads began practicing simple formation flying. Initially, the lines were crooked and heights uneven, looking precarious.
"Maintain altitude! First Squad, eyes on me!" Ed shouted, struggling to control his mount while leading. His experience made him the steadiest flyer. "Second Squad! Spacing! Watch your spacing!" Bolin rasped.
Through the stumbles, the formation slowly tightened. The knights began to master the art of using reins and body weight to guide the Pegasi through turns, climbs, and dives. Though Barrett's roar occasionally corrected a mistake, the progress was meteoric.
Standing nearby, Leylo watched with a faint smile. Moonlight had snuck over, pawing at his pant leg as a reminder of the fifty-one roasted geese still owed. Leylo looked down and gave the small head a playful flick, earning a toothy, silent protest from the creature.
Leylo raised his hand, signaling Barrett. Barrett understood and blew a sharp whistle. "All units! Land! Reform ranks!"
The knights obeyed immediately. The Pegasi flapped their wings and landed, somewhat bumpily, on the clearing. Leylo walked to the front of the line, looking at the young, determined faces drenched in sweat.
"Excellent," Leylo began, his voice clear. "In such a short time, your progress has exceeded my expectations. How does it feel to fly?"
"Exhilarating!" someone shouted, followed by a wave of agreement.
"Very good!" Leylo nodded. "The sky is the domain of the brave. And effort deserves reward."
"Ed. Bolin." Leylo called their names. "As squad commanders, you led from the front in past battles, setting an example for all." He then turned to Barrett. "Instructor Barrett, your rigorous training is the cornerstone of this unit."
Leylo's gaze then swept over the ranks. "Kade. Simon. Huck. And... Lorin." The four knights started, their faces flushing with excitement. They were the ones who had distinguished themselves against the Serpent's minions and the Blood Wolf Mercenaries.
"The seven of you have proven your valor. To honor your achievements..." He paused for emphasis. "I have decided to grant each of you your own Pegasus!"
The training ground fell into a dead silence before erupting into a massive clamor. Barrett watched, a rare curve appearing on his lips. He knew this move by Leylo would inspire the men more than any speech.
"This is both an affirmation of your past and an expectation for your future," Leylo concluded. "Honor is won in war; merit is exchanged for the heads of enemies. Knights, I look forward to the next battle, where the remaining Pegasi will find their masters!"
"Yes, My Lord!" The response was louder than ever before.
