Dominic and Delfina sat in the hospital room while the nurse carefully patched up Delfina's arm in silence.
The sting of antiseptic burned against the graze, but Delfina did not flinch. She kept her gaze fixed on the opposite wall, her thoughts far from the white tiled room.
When the nurse finished, she wrapped the bandage securely and gave Delfina a few instructions about cleaning the wound and watching for infection. After a polite nod, she left them alone.
Silence settled heavily in the room.
Dominic was the first to break it.
"You see what I meant when I said your family would do anything to get rid of you?" he asked quietly.
Delfina pressed her lips together.
Since they had arrived at the hospital, she had not been able to erase the image of the man who had dropped to the ground. The lifeless body. The shock on his face. The blood spreading across the pavement.
She had not even known her name.
The bullet had not been meant for that man. It had been meant for her.
