Chapter 12 - Ava’s pov

Ava sank onto the floor, the photograph trembling in her hands. The room felt suddenly too small, the air too thin. Just when she had allowed herself to believe just a little the past had clawed its way back.

She studied the image again, searching for context, for mercy. Hayden's face was turned slightly away, caught mid-laugh, while the woman beside him leaned in close, her hand resting familiarly on his arm. The timestamp scrawled on the back told her everything she feared: it was recent.

Her phone buzzed. Hayden's name lit up the screen.

For a long moment, Ava couldn't bring herself to answer. When she finally did, her voice was steady in a way she didn't feel.

"Did you want to tell me something?" she asked.

A pause. Too long.

"Ava… what's wrong?"

She closed her eyes. "Someone left a photo at my door. Of you. With another woman."

Silence crashed through the line.

"I can explain," Hayden said quickly. "Please, let me explain."

"I'm tired of explanations," Ava replied, her voice cracking despite her effort. "I told you trust was everything."

"I swear, it's not what it looks like," he insisted. "Her name is Lena. She's my sister."

The word hit her like cold water.

"Your… sister?" Ava whispered.

"Yes," he said, relief flooding his voice. "She just moved back into the city. I didn't tell you because I don't know I was scared it would complicate things even more. I should have told you. That part is on me."

Ava pressed the heel of her hand to her forehead, emotions crashing into one another: anger, embarrassment, relief, lingering hurt.

"Why would someone send me that?" she asked quietly.

"That's what scares me," Hayden replied. "Someone wants to hurt us. Or you."

The weight of his words settled heavily between them.

"I need time," Ava said after a moment. "Not to pull away but to think. To breathe."

"I understand," Hayden said softly. "I'll be here. Whenever you're ready."

After the call ended, Ava stared at the photo one last time before slipping it back into the envelope. The mystery unsettled her, but for the first time in weeks, she felt something solid beneath the fear: clarity.

The past didn't have to define the future but only if the truth was allowed into the light.

Across town, Hazel sat alone in her apartment, one hand resting instinctively on her stomach as she reread a message she hadn't yet sent. She knew things were shifting, lines being redrawn. Whatever was coming next would change all of them.

And as the city settled into uneasy sleep, three lives moved forward on converging paths bound by love, secrets, and the fragile courage it takes to keep choosing hope.
