Morning came with Ember's growl.
Alex woke to find the Flame Wolf standing at the cave entrance, her fire mane crackling softly in the pre-dawn light. Through their bond, he felt it immediately: hunger. Not for food. For essence.
She wants to hunt. The evolution made her... eager.
Alex sat up, his body protesting. Yesterday's shared agony had left him drained, but the bond pulsed with vitality now. Stronger. Clearer. Like the connection had been forged in fire and come out tempered steel.
[HP: 35/45]
[STAMINA: 30/30]
[BOND STRENGTH: 78%]
The bond strength had jumped again. Whatever they'd endured together, it had brought them closer.
"Alright, girl. Let's see what you can really do."
Ember's tail, now wolf-like but tipped with flames, wagged once. Alex felt her anticipation mixed with something else. A wildness he hadn't sensed before. The fire mane burned brighter.
The system warned evolution had costs. Is this it? She's more aggressive now?
They left the cave as the first rays of sunlight filtered through the Wyrmwood's canopy. Alex had his crude spear and knife. Ember had her new form and abilities he hadn't fully tested yet.
The plan was simple: find prey, test her capabilities, absorb essence. Build toward the next evolution, whatever that might be.
I need to think long-term. Can't just stumble from fight to fight. Need strategy.
Alex had been treating this like a game, but games had progression systems. Optimal builds. Power curves. He needed to understand Ember's new abilities before throwing her into serious combat.
"Let's start small. Find something weak, test your speed and fire attacks."
Ember sent back agreement. But underneath, that wildness simmered.
They found their first target within an hour: a Thornback Deer grazing near a stream. The creature was the size of a horse, with antlers that looked like twisted branches and hide covered in bark-like armour.
[THORNBACK DEER - LEVEL 3][HP: 50/50]
[ABILITIES: CHARGE, THORN SHOT, THICK HIDE]
[WEAKNESSES: FIRE, UNDERBELLY EXPOSED]
Level 3. Same as the wolves we fought before. Good test.
Alex studied the terrain. The deer was in open ground near the stream. No easy ambush points. But there were trees close enough to use for cover.
"Ember, circle left. I'll flush it toward you. Hit it with fire when it passes, aim for the legs."
The Flame Wolf moved immediately, low and fast. Her new form was built for speed. Lean muscles, longer legs. She disappeared into the underbrush without a sound.
Stealth AND speed. The wolf essence gave her more than just fire.
Alex waited until Ember was in position, then threw a rock at the deer. It struck the creature's flank. The deer's head snapped up, startled.
Alex stepped out from behind his tree, waving his spear. "Come on!"
The deer saw a threat and did what prey did. Ran. Straight toward where Ember was hiding.
Just like a gank in mid lane. Bait them into the ambush.
The deer galloped past Ember's position. The Flame Wolf exploded from cover, releasing a burst of fire that caught the creature's hind legs. The deer screamed and stumbled, its momentum carrying it into a tumbling roll.
Ember was on it instantly. Her jaws closed on the deer's throat, and Alex felt heat. Her bite wasn't just physical. Fire erupted from her mouth, burning from the inside.
[FIRE BITE ACTIVATED]
The deer thrashed once, twice, then went still.
[THORNBACK DEER DEFEATED]
[ESSENCE ACQUIRED: PLANT-BEAST CORE (MINOR)]
That was... efficient. Too efficient.
The entire fight had lasted maybe ten seconds. Ember released the corpse and looked back at Alex, fire mane blazing bright. He felt her satisfaction.
And hunger. Still hungry. Wanted more.
"Easy, girl. Let's absorb the essence first."
Alex approached and touched the deer's body. "Absorb."
Silver-green light seeped from the corpse, forming a small sphere that drifted to Ember. She snapped it up like a treat, and the essence flowed into her.
[ESSENCE ABSORBED: PLANT-BEAST CORE (MINOR)]
[EVOLUTION PROGRESS: 0.3/15 TO NEXT TIER]
[NOTE: MINOR CORES PROVIDE MINIMAL PROGRESS]
Point-three out of fifteen. So I need fifty minor cores, or... what, five major ones? The math is going to get complicated.
But more concerning was Ember's reaction. She was pacing now, circling the area, sniffing for more prey. The bond pulsed with restless energy.
She's not satisfied. One kill isn't enough anymore.
"Ember, heel."
The Flame Wolf stopped pacing but didn't come to him immediately. Her black eyes fixed on Alex, and for a moment, he saw something that made his stomach tighten.
Challenge. Just a flicker, barely there, but present.
The system warned evolution has costs. Is she going to start resisting commands?
"Ember. Come here."
The command was firmer this time. Alex pushed authority. Not cruelty, just clarity about who led their pack.
Ember's ears flattened slightly. Then she padded over and sat beside him, fire mane dimming to a low burn.
She's still loyal. But there's wildness in her now. The wolf essence didn't just change her body. It changed her temperament.
Alex scratched behind her ears, and through the bond, the tension eased. She leaned into his touch, making that growl-purr sound.
"I know you want to hunt more. We will. But we do it smart, not reckless."
Ember reluctantly agreed.
They spent the next few hours hunting systematically. Alex chose targets carefully, testing different aspects of Ember's new form:
A Crystalback Lizard tested her speed. She ran it down easily, her enhanced agility making her blur through the undergrowth.
A Mud Sloth tested her fire attacks. Her flame darts were hotter now, punching through thick hide that would've resisted before.
A Swarm Bat colony tested her area control. She could release a wave of flames that caught multiple targets, something her old bird form couldn't do.
Each kill added minor essence. By midday, they'd collected two full cores worth.
[EVOLUTION PROGRESS: 2.1/15]
But with each fight, Alex noticed the pattern: Ember was becoming more aggressive. Taking risks she wouldn't have before. Charging in rather than waiting for his signal. Biting harder than necessary, holding kills longer.
She's enjoying it. The violence. The hunt.
During a fight with a Barbed Serpent, it nearly went wrong. The serpent was level 4, larger than their previous targets. Alex had wanted to observe first, plan an approach.
Ember charged in without waiting.
The serpent's tail caught her across the ribs, throwing her into a tree trunk. Alex felt the impact. Sharp pain, breath driven from lungs.
[EMBER HP: 32/40]
"Damn it, Ember!"
But the Flame Wolf was already back on her feet, snarling, fire mane blazing with fury. She attacked with such ferocity that the serpent couldn't defend. Bit through scales, tore at flesh, burned everything she touched.
The serpent died screaming.
[BARBED SERPENT DEFEATED][ESSENCE ACQUIRED: VENOM BEAST CORE]
Ember stood over the corpse, sides heaving, blood and venom dripping from her jaws. Alex felt it clearly now: battle-lust. A desire to keep fighting, to find stronger prey, to prove her strength.
This is the cost. The evolution made her powerful, but it made her wild.
Alex walked over and grabbed her scruff firmly. "Look at me."
Ember turned, and those intelligent black eyes met his. Still his partner. Still Ember. But changed.
"We're a team. You don't charge in alone. You don't take stupid risks. I can't lose you." His voice cracked slightly on the last word. "You're all I have here."
The battle-lust faded. Replaced by something gentler. Concern. Apology.
She nuzzled against his chest, and the fire mane's heat didn't burn. Just warmed.
"I know the wolf instincts are strong. But you're more than just a wolf. You're a phoenix too. And you're my partner. We survive together, or not at all."
Ember made a soft whine and licked his hand.
She understands. The wildness is there, but so is the bond. As long as I keep reinforcing it, she won't lose herself.
A system notification appeared:
[WARNING: HYBRID EVOLUTIONS CARRY BEHAVIORAL SIDE EFFECTS]
[FLAME WOLF FORM: INCREASED AGGRESSION, PACK INSTINCTS, TERRITORIAL BEHAVIOR]
[RECOMMENDATION: MAINTAIN HIGH BOND STRENGTH TO PREVENT LOSS OF CONTROL]
[CURRENT BOND STRENGTH: 78% - ADEQUATE BUT MONITOR CLOSELY]
So that's the trade-off. Power comes with instability. The more she evolves, the more I'll need to work to keep her grounded.
Alex could live with that. The bond was everything. As long as they stayed connected, they'd navigate whatever changes came.
They made camp that evening near a different stream, away from their main cave. Alex wanted to scout new territory, find more diverse prey.
While Ember dozed by the fire, Alex examined his status:
[ALEX PROCTOR - LEVEL 2 SUMMONER]
[HP: 35/45]
[EXPERIENCE: 98/150]
[NEXT LEVEL: 52 EXPERIENCE REQUIRED]
Close to level 3. A few more good fights and I'll hit it.
He also noticed something new in his skill menu:
[SKILLS UNLOCKED]
[BEAST SENSE - DETECT NEARBY CREATURES]
[ANALYZE - VIEW ENEMY STATS AND WEAKNESSES]
[BOND HEALING - SHARE HP WITH BONDED BEAST]
[SOUL RESONANCE (LOCKED) - REQUIRES BOND STRENGTH 85%]
Soul Resonance? What's that?
He focused on it, and a description appeared:
[SOUL RESONANCE: TEMPORARILY MERGE CONSCIOUSNESS WITH BONDED BEAST. SHARE SENSES, REFLEXES, AND INSTINCTS. ALLOWS PERFECT COORDINATION BUT RISKS IDENTITY BLURRING.]
That sounds... dangerous. And incredible. But I'm not at 85% bond yet.
Something to work toward. The stronger his bond with Ember, the more abilities unlocked. The system rewarded partnership, not just power.
Alex looked at the Flame Wolf sleeping peacefully by the fire, her flames reduced to a gentle glow. Despite the aggression issues, despite the wildness, she was still Ember. Still chose him.
We've been in this world for what, a week? And we've come so far. From a tiny fire bird to this.
But they had so much further to go. Level 2 versus a world that casually threw level 28 guildmasters around. Enemies he couldn't even imagine yet.
The razorback boar is next. Then the giant serpent. Each fight gets harder. Each evolution brings new complications.
But that's what I signed up for when I chose the hybrid path. High risk, high reward.
Alex fed the fire and settled in for the night, one hand resting on Ember's warm flank.
...
[QUEST UPDATED: SURVIVE THE WYRMWOOD]
[NEW OBJECTIVE: REACH LEVEL 3]
[NEW OBJECTIVE: COLLECT 15 ESSENCE FOR EMBER'S NEXT EVOLUTION]
[ESTIMATED TIME TO COMPLETION: 2-3 WEEKS]
Two to three weeks of this. Hunting. Fighting. Nearly dying.
I can do this. We can do this.
Ember's sleeping mind responded with drowsy confidence.
Together.
