Chapter 3 - Confronting Reality

He stood up still staring at his reflection, he heard a soft knock on his door, adjusting himself well, he added, "come in", as the door opened slowly and Brooke walked in with a few files in her hands, "this are the paper work and reviews from the TideWest organization and they are impressed", she said as she walked closer to his table, "really, how impressed?", he asked, "very very impressed, I must say". Brooke said, "may I take a seat, Mr. Caldwell", she concluded, "yeah", she sat down across the table facing him, "something changed today, Mr. Brown", she said, he thought for a while, he knew his name wasn't Brown Caldwell, he just had to blend in, "and why do you say so Miss....", he said and paused at the end of his words and looked at her name tag to fully get her name, "Miss Brooke", she was slightly confused on how he will forget her name, she already knew something was off, or was it about yesterday, "well Mr. Brown, let's not dive there now, I know it's because of what happened yesterday, that's why you're all like this", she said, "like what?", he asked, "Well.. I guess calm, I guess , well may I take my leave now, there's a lot work at hand I need to attend to", Brooke added before leaving his office with a faint smile on her face, after some while the door closed behind her, "what happened yesterday", he said slowly and this left him with more questions than answers, after a while, his door opened again but this time around it was his intern, he looked so handsome, very fair, curly hair and a cute smile, Brown thought in his mind as he saw his intern walking closer to his desk, his heart skip a beat, but he's not meant to even show such emotion, now that he knows where he is, and most surprisingly he doesn't know his name and he didn't wear a name tag, he walked inside and stood still, Brown just stared at him, was he meant to say something to him, or the other way, he was just confused, and so was Joshua too, he still stood still waiting for Mr. Brown commands, "are you forgetting something, Mr. Brown", Joshua said, "Umm, Nope there's nothing for today", he just said that, thinking that's what the real Mr. Brown Caldwell would say, Joshua looked at him sternly but kept quiet, as he was about leaving, he stooped as Mr. Brown asked him a question, "What happened yesterday?" He asked, Joshua turned and looked at him, "I wasn't around yesterday, but they said something massive happened in the office between you and someone else", "who was the other person", he added, "they didn't tell", he replied as he walked out of the office with a confused look of' Why would he ask that when he was the main person involved.' The door clicked shut behind Joshua, leaving Brown alone once more. He stared at the luxurious brown door for a long moment, still hearing the intern's voice echo in his head.

"I wasn't around yesterday... but they said something massive happened."

Brown turned slowly in his chair, facing the glass window with New York City's tall buildings and skyline stretching wide in front of him, offering a rich and beautiful view. His reflection stared back at him in the dark glass of his office window, sharp jaw, tailored suit, shoulders he didn't earn.

None of this was his.

He stood up and strolled towards the bar cart in the corner of his office, his eyes opened wide as it was filled with expensive wine and whiskey, unsure if the real Brown Caldwell drank, but needing something to burn the truth down his throat. He poured whiskey, smooth, expensive, silent, and took a long sip.

And then it hit him. A flicker. A flash. Ran through his mind

Not just a memory, more like a fragment.

A man's voice, soft was laughing. Fingers trailing down his chest. A kiss pressed to his neck. A feeling he hadn't known in days...

Desire.

He dropped the glass all of a sudden, and it shattered on the floor as golden liquid split across the marble ground. He stared at it as if it had meaning. As if the cracks might explain everything. Just then, two ladies rushed into the office with a broom and parkers with a mop to clean up the mess, and he just walked back to his seat quietly.
