Chapter 44 - Chapter 44: Beyond Foundation

Gu Yan stood beneath the quiet sky of Stillwater, his back straight, his hands hidden within his sleeves.

For a long moment, he did not speak.

Qing Shi stood opposite him, expression unchanged, as if time itself had forgotten how to leave marks upon him.

"…Speak," Qing Shi said calmly. "There is no need for hesitation."

Gu Yan let out a slow breath.

"For the past few decades," he said, voice low, "those who have reached the end of their lifespan have begun to come to me."

Qing Shi did not interrupt.

"They are all peak Foundation cultivators," Gu Yan continued. "People who have exhausted every path available to them. When their remaining years dropped below ten… they came."

His fingers clenched slightly.

"They ask me for the method beyond Foundation."

Some begged openly.

Some spoke with courtesy and restraint.

Some came bearing gifts they could no longer use.

None dared threaten him.

Not because of Gu Yan himself—but because of Heaven.

"They are afraid," Gu Yan said. "Afraid of death. Afraid of the unknown. Afraid that everything they endured was for nothing."

He paused, then lowered his head.

"Even my former disciples came."

Qing Shi's gaze sharpened, just slightly.

"They spoke of old bonds," Gu Yan said bitterly. "Of gratitude. Of how I once guided them when they were young. They said… if anyone could know the next realm, it would be me."

His voice tightened.

"In their eyes, I was no longer their master. I was a key they wanted to pry open."

When Gu Yan refused—truthfully refused, because he truly did not know—the whispers began.

They said he was hiding knowledge.

That he was afraid.

That he was selfish.

They did not dare blame Heaven.

So they blamed him instead.

Gu Yan's shoulders sank slightly.

"I could endure the accusations of strangers," he said. "But when my own disciples looked at me that way… I realized how fragile respect truly is."

Qing Shi finally spoke.

"Heaven is already aware of this."

Gu Yan looked up sharply.

Qing Shi's voice remained calm. "There are burdens in serving Heaven. But there are also privileges."

A faint tension entered the air.

"Beyond Foundation," Qing Shi said, "lies the Golden Core realm."

Gu Yan's breath stopped.

"Golden… Core?" he repeated, eyes burning.

Qing Shi nodded. "The cultivator expands the dantian, refines all accumulated qi, and condenses it into a core. Once formed, the core is swallowed—becoming the new foundation of existence."

Gu Yan's mind raced.

"This changes everything," Qing Shi continued. "Qi storage, stability, longevity. Foundation Establishment is left behind entirely. And "

Gu Yan swallowed. "And… what else?"

"Divine Sense," Qing Shi replied.

t Gu Yan's questioning look, Qing Shi explained, "It is an inherent ability of all Golden Core cultivators. Perception beyond the five senses. Awareness that extends outside the body—like possessing the eyes of Heaven itself."

His gaze was steady. "Its range grows as cultivation deepens."

Gu Yan's eyes shone.

"Can I… reach this realm?" he asked quietly.

Qing Shi looked at him for a long moment.

Then he raised his hand.

A jade slip appeared, floating gently toward Gu Yan.

"This is the Golden Core cultivation method," Qing Shi said. "Whether you succeed or fail depends on your own path."

Gu Yan accepted it with trembling hands.

"Those who work for Heaven," Qing Shi continued, "and remain loyal, are never abandoned. Your token will stabilize your environment and assist during the breakthrough. But understand this—Heaven can only provide the path not walk for you."

Gu Yan stiffened.

"For Stillwater," Qing Shi said, "Golden Core the aid of Heaven's is claimed."

He produced several more techniques and placed them beside Gu Yan.

"These are for others. You will distribute them yourself."

Qing Shi turned away.

"If you succeed," he said, "we will meet again."

If you fail, the words remained unspoken.

Gu Yan stepped forward and bowed deeply, his forehead nearly touching the ground.

By the time he rose—

Qing Shi was already gone.

Gu Yan stood alone beneath the sky, white hair stirring in the wind, a Golden Core technique clutched in his hands.

Ahead lay either immortality—

Or the end of everything.
