Chapter 5 - Reflections Beneath the Surfaces

Velmora High glittered beneath the morning sun floating towers, vine-wrapped bridges, and glass walkways that shimmered like starlight even in daylight. Students moved in groups between classes, their laughter echoing through marble halls alive with magic.

Kevin adjusted his satchel, glancing at the person walking beside him. Correction: gliding beside him — because Derek Stone didn't walk; he moved like the world adjusted to his pace.

"Alright," Kevin said, forcing casual cheer into his voice, "welcome to Velmora High — where every corner could either amaze you or try to kill you, depending on your luck."

 Derek arched a brow. "Reassuring."

Kevin sighed. "You'll fit right in."

They passed through the Hall of Elements, where enchanted flames danced between crystal pillars and students practiced casting sigils midair.

Then to the Garden of Echoes, where whispering vines repeated conversations just to be nosy.

Derek's gaze flicked around, assessing everything with unnerving calm. "This place reeks of control," he murmured. "Every spell layered on another, every path monitored. It's like living in a cage disguised as paradise."

Kevin shot him a look. "You say that like you've seen worse." "I have." Derek's tone was quiet — too quiet — and Kevin didn't ask more.

They continued past the Clock Spire, where time slowed for those late to class (and sometimes trapped them there as punishment). The morning sun had climbed high when they reached the far edge of the campus — where trees thinned and mist rose off glimmering waters.

🌫️ The Enchanted Lake

The Enchanted Lake of Velmora was breathtaking — a vast, mirror-smooth expanse surrounded by white lilies and moonlight stones, even in full day. The air shimmered faintly with dormant enchantments.

Kevin gestured toward it proudly. "This is the Lake of Reflection. Legend says it shows your true self if you look long enough."

Derek stepped closer, his boots crunching softly on the pebbled path. The wind stirred, rippling the lake's surface.

"My true self?" he echoed, voice laced with quiet irony. "I doubt the lake could survive that."

 Kevin smiled faintly. "Cocky much?"

"Realistic," Derek replied, eyes on the water. For a moment, his reflection flickered — six faint silhouettes overlapping behind him: wings, claws, scales, feathers, flame, shadow. Kevin blinked. "Did you—?"

Before he could finish, the ground beneath his feet shifted — the lakeside stones slick with dew. He stumbled, his balance gone. "Whoa—!"

The world tilted, silver light flashing across the surface and then a hand caught his wrist.

Strong. Unyielding.

Kevin's fall stopped inches from the water as Derek yanked him back with supernatural speed, their chests colliding. Kevin's breath hitched; his pendant flared warm between them.

For a moment, time froze. The lake stilled. The mist shimmered faintly around them, bending like it, too, was watching.

Derek's golden eyes locked onto his, intense and unreadable. "Careful," he said softly. "You almost fell."

Kevin swallowed, words lost somewhere between gratitude and embarrassment. "Yeah. I noticed."

Neither of them moved. The world felt suspended — like one wrong breath could break whatever strange spell held them there.

Finally, Derek released him, stepping back with practiced calm, though a faint trace of color had crept into his cheeks.

"Try not to die on your first tour," he said dryly. "It'd ruin my reputation."

Kevin managed a laugh. "You have a reputation already?"

Derek's lips curved slightly. "Working on it."

🏛️ The Council's Decision

Far beneath Velmora, the council convened once more. The Headmaster stood at the glowing map, tracing the faint pulse of magic that still lingered from the night before.

"The resonance between them is growing," he said quietly. "If it continues, we may face another breach."

The werewolf general growled. "Then separate them."

The phoenix matriarch shook her head. "You'd only hasten the awakening. The prophecy binds them — break it, and chaos will choose its own form."

Lucien, the vampire lord, leaned back lazily. "So, what do you suggest, Headmaster? Hope they behave?"

Elandor's silver gaze hardened. "No. We observe."

He waved a hand, summoning twin crystal orbs — each glowing with the faint light of the boys' auras.

"Assign watchers," he ordered. "Two from each faction. They are not to interfere unless the resonance becomes dangerous. But I want every breath, every surge, monitored."

The crystal pulsed in agreement and across the school, shadows shifted as new eyes opened in silence.

🌊 Back at the Lake

Kevin finally straightened, brushing dust from his uniform, trying to pretend his heart wasn't racing. Derek watched him quietly, unreadable again.

"So," Kevin said, voice only slightly unsteady, "does this happen to all your tour guides, or am I just special?"

Derek tilted his head, a faint smirk touching his lips. "You're special, alright."

Kevin blinked. "Was that a compliment or a threat?"

"Depends," Derek murmured, turning toward the glimmering water again. "On whether you keep asking questions you're not ready to hear the answers to."

Kevin rolled his eyes. "You're impossible." Derek looked back at him, the faintest spark of amusement lighting his gaze. "And you're curious. That's going to get you in trouble, Kevin Stone."

A soft breeze rippled across the lake, carrying faint whispers neither of them understood — echoes of memory, prophecy, and fate.

High above, unseen eyes watched from the shadows of the forest. And far below, the Council's crystals pulsed in rhythm with two beating hearts — different, yet perfectly in sync.

Chapter 6

The Tribrids of Velmora

🌊 Still at the Lake

Late afternoon bled gold across the Enchanted Lake. The rippling water mirrored two figures on its surface — one calm and curious, the other carved in quiet power.

Kevin kicked at the pebbles near his boots. "So… you ever smile? Or is that against Chimera rules?"

Derek arched a brow. "I do — when it's worth it."

"That's basically a no," Kevin teased, tossing a small stone. Each skip left a faint blue spark across the lake. "Come on, you've been here a whole day and haven't told me one thing about yourself."

"There's nothing to tell."

Kevin gave him a look. "That's the biggest lie I've heard since Nia said she could bake." A beat. Then, to Kevin's surprise, Derek almost laughed — low, quiet, genuine. "You're relentless." "Guilty."

The air stilled. Their eyes met and for a moment, something wordless hummed between them. Then the wind shifted. The magic around the lake pulsed, cold and sharp.

 Derek straightened. "We're not alone."

⚡ The Arrival of the Tribrids

Four shadows emerged from the treeline, their presence slicing through the air like lightning.

At the front strode Gabriel Pierce tall, bronze-skinned, eyes gleaming with molten amber. The ground trembled faintly under his boots; his energy was layered vampire, witch, and werewolf in one. He smirked when he saw Derek. "So the rumors were true. Velmora's newest mystery toy actually exists."

 Kevin's stomach flipped. "Oh no."

Derek shot him a glance. "You know them?"

"Unfortunately," Kevin muttered. "They're the Tribrids."

Gabriel's grin widened. "Oh, Kevin Stone remembers me. I'm touched."

Behind him came the Voss twins — Damon and Draymon. Damon's hair was streaked with red firelight, his energy volatile; Draymon's was moon-silver, eyes calm but unreadable. They walked like mirrored storms — dangerous in opposite ways.

Last came Lucy Adams, all poise and frost, her hand resting possessively in Damon's.

"Didn't think you'd be hanging around lakes with strangers, Kev," Damon said, grin sharp.

Kevin rolled his eyes. "It's called 'a school tour.' Not that you'd know what class attendance looks like."

Lucy chuckled. "Still has a tongue on him. I like that." Derek's expression cooled. "You're interrupting."

Gabriel tilted his head, studying him. "Six signatures. I can feel them from here. Vampire, wolf, witch, phoenix, banshee, dragon…" He smiled thinly. "The Council wasn't exaggerating."

 Damon whistled. "Six? Overkill."

Draymon's eyes flicked to Kevin, softening for half a second before settling on Derek again. "And unstable," he said quietly. "If your control slips, you'll take this lake and half the city with you."

Kevin stepped forward. "Enough. He's not your enemy." Gabriel smirked. "Relax, Stone. We're not here to fight." His tone darkened. "Not yet."

Lucy's gaze slid to Derek. "The Council's watching you, Chimera. And so are we. The balance doesn't like change — and you scream change."

A wave of magic rippled through the air, stirring the water into a whirl. The Tribrids turned to leave, fading one by one into the mist.

Gabriel's voice lingered in the echo:

"See you soon, Derek Stone. Let's find out which of us the world truly fears."

🌌 Aftermath

 Silence settled, heavy and electric.

Kevin exhaled. "Well… that could've gone worse."

Derek's eyes were still on the lake. "You know them." "Yeah. We were… classmates once."

"Friends?" Kevin hesitated. "Something like that."

Derek looked at him then, golden eyes sharp. "Be careful with them. They don't follow rules."

 Kevin half-smiled. "Neither do you."

For the first time, Derek didn't deny it. "That's why this should worry you."

The lake rippled again, and for an instant, their reflections blurred — six wings shadowed three pairs of eyes, merging, separating, waiting.
