Chapter 1 - Chapter 1 Back to School

The morning sun spilled over the quiet street, warm and bright. Birds chirped noisily from the trees as cars passed by and people walked along the sidewalk, heading toward their busy days.

Inside a small apartment, a man stopped in front of a bedroom door. He opened it sharply.

"Why are you all still asleep?!" he shouted. "The holidays are over! Back to school!"

He strode to the window and yanked the curtains open. Sunlight flooded the room, stretching across three beds lined up side by side.

From the bed closest to the window, a small boy lifted his head. He had short black hair and sleepy eyes.

"Dad," he muttered, rubbing his face, "do you have to shout?"

The man sighed. "I was calling you all, but none of you woke up."

He turned and walked out.

The boy sat up fully. His name was Roger.

On the second bed, a girl pushed her blanket aside and stood up. Her hair was thick and wild, framing her serious face. Without saying a word to her brother, she walked straight to the bathroom.

Her name was Janine.

She brushed her teeth quietly, staring at her reflection. When she finished, she walked into the living room, picked up her glasses from the table, and put them on.

"Morning," her father said.

Janine didn't reply. She grabbed her school uniform and returned to the bedroom.

Her father sighed softly. Why does she never talk to me?

Moments later, Roger jumped out of bed and ran to the bathroom. After brushing his teeth, he dashed into the living room where his dad was still standing.

Roger grinned brightly. "Dad! Where's my school uniform?"

His father shook his head. "Ah—right."

He walked to the couch, picked up a neatly folded uniform, and handed it to him.

"Here you go."

"Thanks!" Roger said, taking it happily and running back to the room.

As he entered, he saw Janine adjusting her skirt.

She glanced at him and sighed. "What are you staring at?"

Roger shook his head quickly. "Nothing!" He placed his uniform on his bed.

Janine wasn't bothered by changing in front of her brother. When she finished, she looked toward the third bed.

She frowned. "Don't tell me you're still asleep."

She marched over, yanked the blanket off, and shouted, "Wake up!"

A boy with messy hair groaned and rubbed his eyes as he slowly sat up.

His name was Keenan.

"Why did you wake me up…?" he yawned.

Janine crossed her arms. "The holidays are over. It's back to school. Get up and brush your teeth."

Keenan sighed deeply. "Do you always have to shout…? What a drag."

He dragged himself out of bed and walked into the living room.

Their father had just turned back when he saw him.

Keenan blinked. "Uh… morning, Dad."

"Oh, morning," his father replied.

He reached into his pocket and pulled out three R10 notes.

"Here. Give one each to Roger and Janine. I'll be late for work."

"Okay."

The man rushed out the door. Outside, the family dog ran up to him. He patted its head, opened the gate, and disappeared down the street.

Back inside, Keenan stared at the money and sighed. He returned to the bedroom and handed the notes over.

"Dad gave us this," he said.

Janine glanced at the money without much interest. Roger, on the other hand, smiled.

Keenan sighed again and went to brush his teeth.

When he came back out, Janine passed him, heading to the living room. Keenan followed behind her.

Suddenly, the front door opened.

"Auntie Veronica!"

Janine's face lit up. She ran forward and hugged her tightly.

"Morning, Janine," Auntie Veronica said warmly.

Hearing the voice, Roger rushed out of the bedroom and hugged her too.

"Morning, Roger," she laughed.

Keenan sighed. "Morning, Auntie."

"Morning, Keenan."

He picked up his uniform from the couch and returned to the room to finish dressing.

Janine checked the time. "What time is it?"

Auntie Veronica dug into her bag and pulled out a lollipop.

"For you."

Janine smiled instantly. "You know I love these."

Auntie Veronica chuckled and checked her phone. "Hurry up, Keenan. It's almost ten."

Keenan finished dressing and walked out.

She paused, looking at his messy hair. "Did you even brush this?"

Before he could answer, she went to his dad's room, returned with a brush, and fixed his hair.

"Really…?" Keenan muttered.

"There. Much better."

Roger ran to the kitchen, grabbed his lunchbox, and packed it.

Keenan followed, doing the same.

"What about your lunch, Janine?" Roger asked.

She sighed. "I'll just buy something."

Soon, Auntie Veronica locked the door and gate, and they all started walking.

Janine chatted happily with her aunt. Roger ran ahead, full of energy.

Keenan walked behind them with his hands in his pockets.

What a drag…

At the corner, Auntie Veronica waved goodbye. They waved back and split ways.

As Keenan walked toward school, he noticed students chatting in groups. He stopped, looking around.

Then—

"Keenan!"

A boy with red hair ran up to him and slapped his shoulder.

"Long time no see!"

"Kazumae…" Keenan sighed.

His childhood friend grinned. "You don't look happy to see me."

Before Keenan could answer, another voice called out.

"Kazumae!"

A girl with pink hair waved as she approached.

Keenan froze.

Mikora…

His first crush.

She smiled. "Is that you, Keenan?"

"Y-Yeah. Long time no see," he said awkwardly.

Kazumae tilted his head. "Wait… do you still have a crush on her?"

Keenan's face turned red instantly. He stepped on Kazumae's foot.

"Ow!"

"No! Of course not!" Keenan laughed nervously.

"Then why are you blushing?!"

"Ow—stop!"

Soon, the teacher began calling students by class.

When Class D was announced, Keenan, Kazumae, and Mikora entered together.

"We're in the same class again," Kazumae said happily.

"Yeah…" Keenan replied.

Inside, Keenan searched for a seat. Just as he spotted an empty one, someone else sat there.

"You've got to be kidding me…"

He glanced back and saw Mikora sitting next to Kazumae.

Right… she still likes him.

With another sigh, Keenan headed to the back and sat down.

Next to him was a girl with long black hair and cold eyes.

Her name was Suzuka.

She glanced at him once, then returned to her book.

The teacher entered. "Good morning."

"Good morning, Teacher."

Books were handed out. Mikora volunteered to read, her voice calm and clear.

Keenan listened quietly.

She really does read beautifully…

When the bell rang, everyone stood up.

Keenan followed Mikora and Kazumae outside, but stopped.

"I'm going to the shop. Go on without me."

They didn't notice as he turned away.

On his way, he glanced back at the classroom window.

Suzuka was still sitting there.

"…Why is she still inside?"

He bought two drinks and returned to the room.

Suzuka looked up as he entered.

He placed one drink on her desk.

"For you."

She stared at it, surprised. "…For me?"

"Yeah."

After a moment, she took it. "Thanks."

She opened it and drank.

Keenan noticed the book on her desk. "What are you reading?"

She hesitated, then showed him the cover.

"Naruto."

"Oh. You like anime?"

She nodded softly. "Yeah."

"There's nothing wrong with that," Keenan said. "I like anime too."

Her cold expression melted into a small smile.

"Really? What's your favorite?"

"Classroom of the Elite."

Her eyes lit up. "Mine's Demon Slayer!"

Then suddenly, she looked away again, cold expression returning.

"…Anyway."

Keenan blinked. "O…kay."

Suddenly, words began appearing on the classroom board by themselves.

Write down your ability.

"…Did you see that?" Keenan asked.

Suzuka stood up. "That wasn't there before."

"This is weird…" Keenan picked up the chalk. "I'll try."

He wrote: Teleport

Suzuka hesitated, then wrote: Create

The words glowed—and vanished.

Both of them felt something sink deep inside them.

Suzuka's eyes widened. "What was that?!"

"I don't know," Keenan replied calmly.

"That's not normal!" she shouted.

The bell rang, breaking the moment.

Students poured back into the classroom.

Suzuka sat down. Keenan returned to his seat.

What just happened…?

Next Time:

Keenan discovers the limits of his ability.

"Teleport… but weak."

"What a drag."

Before he could think further, the teacher walked in.

"Today's lesson will be Physical Development. Go get changed."

Kazuma's face lit up. "Yes! Finally, I can run!"

Keenan let out a quiet sigh. "What a drag…"

Suzuka glanced at him. "You don't like PD either?"

"Not really."

"Alright," the teacher said, clapping her hands. "Everyone, go change."

The class filed out. The boys headed toward the bathroom, and Keenan changed in silence, his thoughts drifting. Mikora's probably going to run like crazy today…

Suddenly, he closed his eyes—

And everything shifted.

The air changed. The sound vanished.

When Keenan opened his eyes, the room was dead silent.

Dozens of eyes turned toward him.

The girls' changing room.

Gasps echoed as lockers slammed shut and towels were pulled close. Suzuka froze, eyes wide, then spun around, covering her face.

"K-Keenan?!"

Keenan's heart nearly stopped.

Right in front of him stood Mikora, halfway changed into her gym uniform, her face burning red as she shouted, "TURN AROUND!"

Keenan's eyes widened. "WHAT JUST HAPPENED?!"

Before anyone could react—

Everything went dark.

To be continued…
