Chapter 21: THE FIRST ATTACK — Part 2

The fire started spreading before I realized Danny had lost control.

I turned toward his position and saw it—not the controlled barrier he'd been practicing. A wall of flame thirty feet high, roaring like a living thing. Heat hit my face from fifty feet away.

"DANNY!" Ruth screamed.

He stood at the center of it, hands outstretched, eyes wide with terror. The fire obeyed him and didn't—growing beyond his intention but following his panic.

Two attackers were caught on the wrong side. They screamed. The kind of screaming that would live in my nightmares forever.

One dropped and rolled. The fire followed him. Consumed him.

The other ran. Made it ten feet before the flames caught his clothes. He went down. Stopped moving.

"DANNY, STOP!" I ran toward him. The heat was overwhelming. Couldn't get close.

Ruth grabbed me. "You can't reach him! He has to stop himself!"

"He's killing them!"

"They came to kill us!"

The flames roared higher. The remaining attackers—the ones not burning—broke completely. Threw down weapons and fled. Their tactical retreat became a rout. Terror overtaking training.

Danny collapsed. The fire died instantly—like someone had flipped a switch. Smoke rose from two blackened shapes that used to be people.

Silence.

Then someone vomited. The sound broke the spell. Everyone started moving again.

"Casualties!" Miles shouted. "Count them!"

I ran to Danny. He was on his knees, staring at his hands. Shaking.

"I didn't—I couldn't stop it—they were burning and I couldn't—"

"You defended us," I said. Grabbed his shoulders. Made him look at me. "You saved lives."

"I killed them."

"They came to kill children. You stopped them."

He didn't respond. Just kept shaking.

Ruth appeared. "We've got three seriously wounded. Peter took a bullet to the shoulder. Angela has a knife wound. Sarah broke her arm—fell during the fighting."

"How bad?"

"Peter's critical. The others will survive. Miles is working."

"Our dead?"

"Two." Her voice went flat. "Marcus—camouflage boy. Took a bullet to the chest. Keiko tried to help him, but..." She didn't finish.

Camouflage Marcus. The sixteen-year-old kid who'd challenged me about feeding newcomers previously. Who'd followed Jason's lead. Who'd been trying to find his place.

Dead.

"Anyone else?"

"One more. Victor." She looked away. "Fire. He was running electrical lines when it started. Couldn't get clear."

Victor. The electrician who'd brought us power. Who'd built the warning system. Who'd been too valuable to risk in combat but died anyway.

Gone.

"Attackers?"

"At least four dead. Two from Danny's fire. One James threw—broke his neck. One bled out from Ruth's pipe. Unknown number wounded and fled. We have two captured—unconscious, disarmed."

Two civilians dead. Three seriously wounded. Against four confirmed enemy kills and at least six wounded.

We'd won. The cost was real.

"Secure the prisoners," I said. Voice mechanical. "Treat our wounded. Establish defensive perimeter in case they regroup. Gather everyone in the dining hall in one hour."

Ruth nodded and left.

I sat next to Danny. He was still staring at his hands.

"I burned them alive."

"Yes."

"They screamed."

"Yes."

"I'll hear it forever."

"Probably."

He looked at me. "That's supposed to make me feel better?"

"No. It's supposed to be honest. You did something terrible that needed doing. It saved lives. It also killed people. Both things are true."

"How do I live with that?"

"Same way anyone does. One day at a time. Understanding that survival sometimes has costs."

Not comforting. But true.

The sun was fully up now. The compound looked like a war zone—which it was. Blood. Scorch marks. Shell casings. Two bodies covered with sheets.

People moved in shocked silence. Treating wounded. Securing weapons. Processing what had just happened.

Emma appeared from the evacuation route. Wings trembling. She saw the bodies. Froze.

I walked to her. Stood between her and the worst of it.

"It's over," I said. "We won."

"People died."

"Yes."

"Will more come?"

"I don't know. Maybe."

She looked up at me. Those old eyes in a young face. "Was I safe?"

"Yes. We kept you safe. Like we promised."

"Okay." She walked past me toward the medical area. Probably looking for someone she knew.

I stood there in the center of the compound. Two friends dead. Three wounded. Thirty-two people looking to me for what came next.

The System pulsed.

[QUEST COMPLETE: DEFEND NEW HAVEN]

[VICTORY ACHIEVED]

[CASUALTIES: WITHIN ACCEPTABLE RANGE]

[REWARDS: +1,200 EXP, +800 NP, MILITARY FUNCTIONS UNLOCKED]

[LEVEL UP!]

[YOU ARE NOW LEVEL 13]

[WARNING: ENEMY SURVIVORS WILL REPORT]

[PROBABILITY OF RETALIATION: HIGH]

Acceptable range. Two dead was acceptable to the System.

It wasn't acceptable to me. But it was what happened.

I walked to the center of the compound. People gathered. All thirty-two survivors. Wounded being supported by healthy. Everyone exhausted.

"Meeting in one hour," I said. Voice carrying. "We need to talk about what happens next."

No one argued. They just dispersed. To treat wounds. To clean weapons. To sit and breathe and process survival.

I found a wall and sat. My hands finally stopped shaking. Replaced by numbness.

Ruth sat beside me. Blood on her clothes. Pipe across her knees.

"First combat," she said.

"Yeah."

"You did okay."

"I nearly died three times."

"Nearly. But didn't. That's what matters."

"We lost two people."

"Could have lost twenty. You prepared us. We held." She looked at the compound. "This place survived its first real test."

"At what cost?"

"The cost of being real. Dreams don't have casualties. Nations do."

I didn't have an answer for that.

We sat there as the sun rose fully. New Haven still stood. Bloodied. Damaged. But standing.

Tomorrow we'd bury our dead.

Today we'd survived.

It would have to be enough.
