Chapter 20 - Tally

The valley was quiet again.

Not the fragile quiet from before—but the kind that came after violence had been measured, applied, and ended. The wounded invaders were gone, dragged back into the trees by those still able to walk. Blood darkened the soil near the boundary, already soaking in.

Rook didn't chase them.

He never had to.

He descended from the watchtower at an unhurried pace. Lena stood near the palisade, rolling her shoulder once, testing range of motion. The cut from the thrown stone had already stopped bleeding.

"Report," Rook said.

"No fatalities inside," she replied. "Three incapacitated outside. One confirmed kill."

She met his eyes. No pride. No apology.

Just facts.

The System chimed.

Once.

Then again.

Then several times in rapid succession.

[Territory Successfully Defended.]

[Hostile Incursion Repelled.]

[Defense Efficiency: High.]

Rook opened his status window.

Numbers scrolled upward—not dramatically, but decisively.

Level Increased.

Then again.

He stopped at Level 13.

Three levels. From preparation and positioning. Not from swinging a weapon.

Rook closed the window and turned to Lena.

She was staring at her own interface, brow slightly furrowed.

"How much?" he asked.

She looked up.

"Five levels," she said after a moment. "I was nine. I'm fourteen now."

That earned a nod.

Combat rewards were higher. Risk always paid faster.

The System chimed again, this time softer.

[Scout Contribution: Validated Under Combat Conditions.]

[Role Stability Increased.]

Lena exhaled slowly, tension finally draining from her posture.

The Territory interface updated.

Population: 2

Housing Capacity: Exceeded

Morale: Stable (Elevated)

External Threat Awareness: Increased

That last line lingered.

Rook dismissed the panel and looked at the boundary string—still glowing, still intact. The traps had done their work. The walls had held. The system had noticed.

This hadn't been a fluke.

It had been a test.

Lena broke the silence. "They'll talk."

"I know," Rook said.

"Next time, it won't just be desperate people."

"I know reassuring things to say," Rook replied calmly. "They won't help."

She studied him for a moment, then nodded.

"Then what's next?"

Rook looked toward the unfinished ground beside the cabin—open space where new structures could rise.

"Capacity," he said. "Then deterrence."

The System pulsed faintly, as if in agreement.

Both of them stood there a moment longer, watching the valley as the sun climbed higher, casting long shadows over the walls that had already changed the balance of the world.

Behind those shadows—

Numbers waited.
