Akira's eyes lit up.

As they headed back up—
Akira asked:
"Where's Orochimaru lately?"
"Busy on the frontlines," Hiruzen replied.
The war wasn't truly over.
Now it was a battle of elites.
Each village probing the others.
"Sounds exhausting."
Akira stepped out of the Hokage residence.
"You're a jōnin now," Hiruzen said.
"Your mission will come soon."
"Looking forward to it."
Hiruzen frowned.
…That didn't sound reassuring.

After Hiruzen left—
Several masked Root members appeared.
"Danzō-sama requests your presence."
Akira stroked his chin.
"I feel like this is the part where I kill you all."

Root shows up—

"Please don't joke," the leader said stiffly.

"Man, no sense of humor."
Akira shrugged.
The Root members forced awkward laughter.
This was the guy who rampaged on the Cloud front—
And stormed the Hyūga clan.
If he wanted them dead—
They wouldn't last long.
Even emotionless Root operatives—
Preferred not dying.
They led him through Konoha's underground.
The sewer system.
Akira pinched his nose.
"You people actually live here?"
"I get being the village's 'dark side'…"
"But this is literal."
"This is just the entrance," one replied stiffly.
"A shinobi must endure."
Akira patted his shoulder.
"You've got it rough."
The operative silently moved away.
You're one of us too now.
But he didn't dare say it.
Not to Akira.
After a long walk—
They arrived.
Konoha's hidden landmark.
Root's secret base.
Built within a hollowed mountain.
Danzō was already waiting.
"Danzō-sama."
Akira waved casually.
The others dropped to one knee.
"Danzō-sama."
"Come," Danzō said.
"I'll show you around."
He turned and walked.
Behind him—
A hooded figure followed.
Calm.
Refined.
Expressionless.
Akira grinned.
"Well, well—if it isn't Hiruko-sensei."
So he really did get pulled into Root.
Hiruko stared at him.
A vein twitched.
This guy—
Was the reason he got captured.
Interrogated.
Beaten.
And the worst part?
They never even asked anything.
What was he supposed to confess?!
