Chapter 5 - Head Smasher

Lydia pulled her wooden stake out of the guard's head. She wanted to keep it, just in case she and Winston ran into trouble. Seemingly everything about this environment they were in, wanted them dead, so she'd rather have an advantage against whatever threatened them next, no matter how small that advantage might be.

However, when she pulled the stake out, she noticed something weird. Within the crushed skull of the guard, or basically, within the gaping hole in his head, she saw a gem.

"Is that a ruby?" She put her hand in, and pulled the gem out. "Or is it just covered in blood? Hmm… no that's a ruby."

"Weird," She squinted.

Lydia wanted to put the gem in her pocket, because she figured it was expensive. Assuming they got out of here, she'd rather have a valuable item to trade with out there, but just then, she was reminded that she didn't have any pockets. She was naked.

"Right," She grunted.

The best move was to undress the man she just killed, and steal all of his loot, basically. This was exactly what she did. She stripped the dead guard naked, and even managed to find his Longsword in the midst of the mud.

"What are you doing down…" Winston came over. "Oh, smart. We can blend in."

"Or, we won't be naked any longer," She smiled, "I know you'd rather see me naked, but too bad, old man."

"Old man?" He looked at himself, "I'm two years older than you at most! I'm like twenty years old in this hell hole."

"And you're hoping that I'm at least eighteen?" She asked, as she climbed out of the ditch. "Nice try. I know for a fact that I turn eighteen two months from now."

"You got spammed with memories too, huh?" He asked.

"Yup," She held on to him, to stand up straight once she climbed out of the muddy ditch. "Why aren't you dressed yet?"

"I came to check on you," He grabbed her by the elbow. "Can you even walk? That leather is way too big for you."

"Beggars can't be choosers," She smiled, "We gotta get you dressed."

"Relax," He grunted, his fingers burning, "I'm not trying to fuck you, okay? I'm just trying to keep you alive, so chill out, and stop acting like you never saw a weiner in your past life."

"God…" She sighed, "Winnie, take a hint, God damn it. Look at my face!"

Winston ignored his pain for a moment, as best as he could, and looked at Lydia's face. It was beet red, and considering that she hadn't exactly tired herself out in battle, he put two and two together, and picked up on what she meant. She was getting shy, she was even blushing, so he just smiled, and decided not to push her any further.

"I'm actually nineteen…" She admitted, "Just please get dressed, I'm struggling here. This isn't the best place for us to get all smoochy smoochy. There are corpses behind us, for goodness' sake."

"Alright shorty," He smiled, and started walking towards the man he killed.

Much like the suit Lydia stole, the one he looted afterwards was mostly leather. It fit him better, as he was 5'10" or 177cm tall, while Lydia was about six inches shorter.

The two of them were suited with leather armor now. It was hardly protective, since the leather was about an inch thick, and quite worn down, but it was better than walking around naked.

"Can't say that I'm a fan, I look like laminate flooring." He said once he got dressed. "But the boots are nice. Walking barefoot around here is a nightmare."

Lydia helped him get dressed, on the account that his fingers were all messed up. She didn't like being close to his naked body, and she started heavy breathing at some point, but she pulled through. She was rather quiet now, though, so she didn't have any snarky remarks to add.

Since she was avoiding eye contact, she made a little discovery. She found something in the corpse's mouth, a chewable of some sort that looked a lot like seaweed.

At first she was confused, but she pieced the puzzle together rather quickly.

"Did you cut this bastard?" She asked.

"Yup," He nodded, "Right on the ass, or hip, I think?"

Lydia quickly crawled close to the corpse's hip. She found a bunch of dried up blood there, but no cut of any sort.

"He healed himself…" She sighed.

"Not fast enough," He smiled, "I nailed the motherfucker like he was a vampire."

Without saying another word, she grabbed the half-eaten chewable out of the corpse's mouth, and fed it to Winston. He was shocked when he saw her leaping over with those big leather clothes of hers just to shove something in his mouth, but he trusted her, so he didn't protest.

"Tastes like crunchy shit," He said, as he ate the palm-sized chewable. "What are you up to, Lydia?"

Before she could answer, he felt an instant relief on his hands, his fingers. The disastrous severe pain went away in seconds!

Instinctively, he looked at his hands as this happened, and saw his torn, splinter-covered fingers seal up, and heal in real time!

Afterwards, he started coughing his lungs out. He spat out a few splinters, and a few clumps of blood.

"Are you tryna kill me?" He grunted.

"Nope," She patted him on the back. "Your fingers are alright now, aren't they?"

"Yeah…" He composed himself, "Let's hope I spat out that crunchy shit, and not some part of my lung."

"This bastard wouldn't have eaten it if it was gonna kill him." She added. "It's probably this world's shitty version of a health potion? We're in some medieval shit show, so making potions just to put them in glass bottles would be too expensive for them. Clay bottles can break, so, chewables? Next best thing."

"Smart," He nodded, "I do feel better now."

Lydia smiled at him, and was happy that he was okay. He nearly broke his fingers trying to free her, and she appreciated it, so she felt that it was about time she helped him back, in whatever way she could.

Speaking of making discoveries, she bashed her Longsword in the corpse's head afterwards, and fished out the ruby hidden on his head.

"Jesus!" He exclaimed, "He's dead already!"

"I wanted to show you this," She held the ruby up. "You liked biology in high school. I'm thinking they grow gems in their heads once they die, but, can you make any sense out of that? What's the point of it?"
