Chapter 57 - Chapter 57: The Verdict

Richard Cross is convicted on a Thursday.

Fourteen counts. The jury takes two days. Not because the evidence is complicated — it isn't, not anymore, not after what the ledgers and the recordings and the testimony built into something airtight and visible from every angle. The two days are about being certain. About twelve people sitting with the weight of a decision that will end a man's life as he's known it and making sure they're sure.

They're sure.

Chen calls at two-seventeen PM. I'm in the kitchen. Lily is asleep in the bassinet I've moved from room to room like a satellite because I'm not yet at the stage of letting her out of my immediate vicinity for longer than it takes to shower. Hope is drawing on the back of a legal brief Marcus accidentally left here last week, which I noticed ten minutes ago and decided not to stop because she looked so focused and also because it was a document I'd already reviewed.
