Hyūga Yu stood by the shore, watching as the waves rolled in one after another, crashing against the sand and washing over his feet.
The icy seawater helped settle his nerves, cooling the tension that had gripped him since learning of the impending crisis. His mind began to clear, and Yu started to think.
He didn't waste time dwelling on how Root intended to use him as bait, nor did he speculate on what level of shinobi the Hidden Mist would dispatch to target him. Instead, he pondered a single question:
How exactly does a shinobi elevate their strength?
It was a vast, open-ended question. Ninjutsu, Taijutsu, Genjutsu, Senjutsu, Kekkei Genkai—any of these disciplines, when developed to their absolute limit through rigorous training, could grant a person power beyond imagination.
The real problem was: how could he rapidly increase his strength within a strictly limited timeframe?
Yu quickly identified the deadline for this window of opportunity: before the Battle of Kannabi Bridge.
According to the original timeline, the Kannabi Bridge incident would erupt sometime next year, between the spring and summer of Leaf Year 50. Shortly after that, Minato Namikaze would instantly slaughter fifty Hidden Stone elites, forcing the Land of Earth to sue for peace. Following two rounds of negotiations, the Third Shinobi World War would end, and Minato would ascend as the Fourth Hokage.
Root's operations against the Hidden Mist would undoubtedly take place before then. By the time the tragedy of Kakashi Hatake killing Rin Nohara occurred, the Hidden Mist was already at its wits' end; they only resorted to the unstable weapon of a Jinchūriki "bomb" because they had no other options left.
Yu estimated that Root's assassination attempt on the Third Mizukage was less than ten months away from today, October 12th, Leaf Year 49.
In other words, in less than a year, Yu needed to elevate himself to a level where he could participate in Kage-level combat—and not just as a peripheral supporter, but as a pivotal force capable of swaying the outcome.
So, how was he to achieve this?
Yu had already tested the conventional methods of training Ninjutsu and Taijutsu. It had taken him thirteen years of foundational training, supplemented by external help, just to force his strength to a level where he could briefly trade blows with a Jonin.
Moving forward, if he followed the standard path of training Wind Style, Gentle Fist, the Eight Inner Gates, or Medical Ninjutsu—even though he was no longer shackled by a severe lack of chakra—one year would only be enough to bring his collective basic skills up to the level of a Special Jonin.
[Note: According to the official databooks, a shinobi with an overall score above 49, with specific categories exceeding 8 but a total below 61—such as Hayate Gekkō or Kurenai Yūhi—falls into this category. Shinobi of this rank are typically killed instantly when facing a Kage-level opponent like Itachi Uchiha.]
Therefore, Yu reached an immediate conclusion: he absolutely could not take the conventional route.
In the shinobi world, the fastest way to boost one's combat effectiveness is to master a specific Jutsu. Not just any ordinary technique, but one so powerful it broke the standard mold—an "overpowered" Jutsu.
By building a supporting combat system around such a technique, one could compensate for its flaws until they reached a point where the enemy might know the weakness but remained completely powerless to exploit it.
Many such techniques existed: the Wind Style: Rasenshuriken paired with Senjutsu; the Lightning Style Chakra Mode, which integrated offense, defense, and speed; or the Ninja Art: Creation Rebirth paired with the Strength of a Hundred Seal.
However, the signature techniques of these famous shinobi did not fit Yu's own existing system. He had to start from what he already possessed—the Byakugan, Medical Ninjutsu, Taijutsu, and Wind Style—to construct an S-rank Jutsu unique to himself.
Fortunately, Yu had long since entertained a certain concept.
Lightning Style has the effect of activating body cells. When developed to its peak, the lightning wraps around the body to form a Lightning Style Armor that enhances both durability and speed.
So, what about a Wind Style Chakra Mode?
Unlike Lightning Style, Wind Style does not easily stimulate cell activity to increase speed or grant flight. Even the most extreme applications of Wind Style on a human body in the shinobi world usually resulted in variations like the Third Kazekage's Magnet Navy (using Wind Style to manipulate Iron Sand) or the methods of Seimei, the founder of the Takumi Village, who used ninja tools to master Wind Style to the point of firing chakra cannons or forming wind walls to deflect projectiles.
From this perspective, it wasn't that no Wind Style masters had ever thought of developing a mode similar to the Lightning Style version; it was simply that such a mode was perceived as useless even if it were developed.
But Yu was different.
The Hyūga Clan's Byakugan could see all 361 chakra pathway system points (tenketsu) and the entire meridian network of the human body. Their unique physiology allowed them to release chakra from any point on their body. Furthermore, Yu possessed cutting-edge knowledge of Medical Ninjutsu and biomedicine.
The essence of Lightning Style enhancing physical ability is the acceleration of cellular metabolism—a point Kakashi Hatake explicitly mentioned while teaching Sasuke the Chidori.
If one deconstructs the mechanism of cellular metabolism, it is easy to see that it consists of various pathways: glycolysis, the TCA cycle (citric acid cycle), the pentose phosphate pathway, glycogen synthesis, gluconeogenesis, fatty acid synthesis, and more.
Yu deduced that the metabolic boost provided by Lightning Style was based on intermediary metabolism—specifically, intracellular metabolism. This metabolism can be divided into two processes: catabolism and anabolism, which involve a series of enzyme-catalyzed reactions. These biochemical reactions not only ensure normal metabolism but are also highly conducive to the release and acceptance of energy during the process.
Yu's focus was specifically on the enzyme-catalyzed reactions within this process.
In his previous life, he had read a paper titled Progress in Research on Energy Metabolism Design for Cell Factories. From it, he learned:
Substrate-level phosphorylation is the most direct way for cells to supply energy. It can transfer high-energy phosphate bonds from high-energy phosphate compounds to ADP to synthesize ATP through simple enzyme-catalyzed reactions. Therefore, through simple gene knockout, attenuation, or over-expression, the synthesis and consumption of ATP can be directly controlled...
In short, if chakra could be refined down to the molecular level to perform precise "surgical" regulations on the body's cells at a microscopic level, Yu could use chakra to stimulate the process of physical activation. He could, effectively, turn himself into a "Super Cell Factory."
What did this have to do with Wind Style?
It is well known that the essence of the Wind Style: Rasenshuriken is the use of shape and nature transformation to create countless molecular-sized wind blades that attack the enemy's cells and meridians on a microscopic level.
This meant that if Wind Style chakra were refined to its absolute limit and paired with the Byakugan and the Chakra Scalpel, one could perform microscopic surgery at the molecular level.
Of course, this was only one capability of a Wind Style Chakra Scalpel. By cutting, stimulating, restricting, or regulating the energy production and release of intracellular microscopic substances, there was so much more Yu could achieve.
But to complete this microscopic surgery and develop his unique Byakugan: Wind Style Chakra Mode, he needed to master and deconstruct four specific techniques:
The Rasengan, The Wind Style: Rasengan, And the Mystical Palm Technique.
He would deconstruct those three to finally master the fourth: the Micro-scale Wind Style: Chakra Scalpel!
Yu's gaze sharpened. He slowly looked up, staring toward the Hidden Leaf Medical Corps camp located twenty kilometers away.
